RE: The Star Wars thread
I think there’s plenty of room for grey in Star Wars. It’s just that these childish attempts do nothing of the sort.

You want a great deconstruction?

I’ve got one word for that: Kreia.

Even the evil of Darth Vader or the Emperor was over-the-top mythical. You didn't see Darth Vader look really evil stuff like rape a kid, dismember women and eat their legs in front of them. It was a fantasy story with SF tech in space with a light-hearted bent. The evil was cool because it was a bit silly and over-the-top.

RE: The Star Wars thread
It called to the presumed evil of the Nazi regime. Everyone knew the Nazis were evil, and the Empire was analogous to the Nazis which were only defeated a few short decades earlier. I think it was presumed that the Empire was gassing space-jews on Auschwitz 9, even if it was never demonstrated on screen. They destroyed an entire planet in the first half of the movie after all. I should think that counts as genocide.

God demands of Man responsibility. God demands of Woman vulnerability. These are their curse and blessing alike. Libertianism is to Man as Feminism is to Woman.

Never underestimate the thirst of the cuck. He will continue supporting these movies until it somehow morphs into 2.5 hours of Eskimo tranny porn.

Nah, up to a point. They'll vocally defend it against "terrible people" and "toxic fans" but remember that they're people of no character: even as they do so they're looking for the first excuse possible to jump onto a better bandwagon.

Although we're kind of at an odd spot right now. Everyone expects this movie to be awful, Game of Thrones is over, the original MCU arc is over (so nobody's out there fighting to defend Bie Larson's honor), not enough people give a shit about the Watchmen for it to inspire any clingers-on SJW fans....

At the moment there isn't really any franchise out there that's effectively stirring up SJW rage into a defensive rampage.

The writing sucks, the acting sucks, there's no meaningful tension in the episodes, and the whole thing feels very rushed and first-draft. With a 12-15 million dollar per episode budget, it's pretty inexcusable to spend the entire thing on special effects and have the substance of the show be an afterthought.

It's like almost every streaming show, it's a great 2 1/2 hour story stretched out to 12 hours. Inevitably, it gets slow and pointless.

Pointing that out gets you accused of being simple with a short attention span.

EDIT: The problem with giving some "bad ass" character like a Mandalorian too much screen time is that he loses the mystery. You can't imagine him being an amazing fighter when they show uninspired fight scenes. You can't imagine him being an unstoppable bad ass when they show him get stunned and beaten by a bunch of Jawas with comedic effect. Etc

RE: The Star Wars thread
At this point I'd rather just see movies of the books Tarkin, Plagueis or the Darth Bane trilogy. The former two are excellent books with a lot of depth and political maneuvering, far more than the Rebel-oriented stories of the initial trilogy anyway, and the DB trilogy would just be really cool to watch as unapologetic stories about the Sith. Mandalorian has a problem deciding on a tone, whereas I'd rather the tone be "this guy is an outlaw" rather than "he always does the right thing and sometimes falls in love for no reason." Very un-Fett like.

Your comment got me thinking: one of the deep issues with these films is that the characters aren't characters, they're baseball cards.

Contrast to Breaking Bad. While there are moments of Supreme Awesomeness within it, the character of Walt isn't defined by them; he's defined by his Gamma narcissism and descent into madness. It's a four-dimensionsal story - any one moment within the story is dependent upon what happened before, and what happens after.

Now, Boba Fett - he's a one-liner. An outfit. A collectible. His very nature is not that of a storied person, it's that of an emoticon.

Even the other chracters - Han Solo - it's a 3 piece arc. Scoundrel - friend - leader. We want to imagine his happily-ever-after, not experience "Star Wars Episode 29: Marital Counsellor". We want to imagine him doing cool, rogueish, comic book things in his past - not character growth. All of these characters are sufficiently and completely defined - they don't need stories and drama heaped onto them.

I haven't seen The Mandalorian, but would anybody bother with it if it didn't have the Star Wars label on it? Probably not.

Now streaming on the DLive platform..
