New seatbelt ad - of course, the guy's the imbecile
Just as with drunken driving ads, there is a paucity of examples where females are the ones committing the infractions.

This time, a new NHTSA ad shows just how dumb the driver - of course, a guy - is for not wearing his seatbelt and how he therefore deserves a ticket. His passenger, a young attractive female, is dutifully wearing hers. Bonus points - he's a straight white guy.

They've been playing the hell out if it all morning on two different channels with mostly guy audiences (car races and car oriented shows). I haven't checked anything with likely female viewing audiences to see if there's a similar message directed at women, but I kinda doubt it.

Never mind that the car (a mid-nineties Ford Mustang) would also have an airbag designed for just such an situation, he goes flying through the windshield and shatters the dreams of his happy and hopeful bride to be. In the modern western world, wouldn't there be at least as many grrl powered licensed drivers, single moms, independent lesbians, etc? Are they really so perfect and error free? Surely this represents a serious gap in coverage for necessary safety messaging....

Hah I'm not going to get upset about this. I wouldn't even want to imagine a girl that hot getting all smashed up anyway.

There do exist similar ads/PSAs focusing on distracted teen/woman drivers who are conversing or texting and get into crashes.

Regardless, its a valid message - buckle up.

I don't know man, I think you're reading too much into this one. The guy is the one driving and playing it aloof when his girlfriend/bride points at some house. He looks like he's in control of his life and has found a sweet, feminine and smiling woman to share his life with. I'm not sure making a fatal mistake like not putting his seatbelt on makes him an imbecile nor do I think they're trying to portray men as some type of irresponsible idiots. As for the technical inaccuracies, I think they're irrelevant considering the message in this ad.

In an age where LGBT couples are pictured as if they were a majority and where degeneracy is celebrated around the world, any ad showing a simple, normal, happy couple is good to me, in my book. Plus there's plenty of commercials showing dumb bitches texting at the wheel and killing themselves/innocent people. As bacan posted, I wouldn't worry too much about this one.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

Men are the ones who die in traffic, overwhelmingly so. Risk-taking behaviour and all that. This add is trying to help them.

http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs358/en/

"From a young age, males are more likely to be involved in road traffic crashes than females. About three-quarters (73%) of all road traffic deaths occur among men. Among young drivers, young males under the age of 25 years are almost 3 times as likely to be killed in a car crash as young females."

I like the ad. It subtly tells young men "think of all the girls you're leaving behind if you kill yourself behind the wheel". And as previous posters pointed out, the couple is painted as wholesome people looking for a new home to raise their future family.

To me it's in the same category as that home-improvement add discussed in another thread here. I wouldn't even mind if taxpayer money was spent on creating and broadcasting this.

Who doesn't wear their seatbelt while in the driver's seat? Even when moving my car from the sidewalk to the driveway, over a distance of a few feet, I have my seatbelt on. It's just a basic habit set in stone for me, I doubt anyone would forget to wear their seatbelt if they were the one driving.

It looked to me like the Impala ran the stop sign.

Why don't they make commercial for not running stop signs? They could call it "Stop when you see em." Or "Stop Red" since "Go Green" is already the slogan they use to remind me I get a ticket for putting grass and branches in the gray trash can.

Ladies should start up MARSS (mothers against running stop signs) and get federal funding.

All this crap does is make a problem where there isn't one. Its so the municipalities with shitty tax bases can run the "click it or ticket" road blocks and make money. Plus they can get people for warrants and all types of other shit.

Aloha!

I agree that tv commercials always portray women as intelligent can do it all creatures, men as imbeciles and kids as adorable.
But you're thinking too much on that one.
