Gordie Howe passes away at 88
This was confirmed hours ago by various sources. He had been afflicted with Alzheimer's disease for several years but was still seen occasionally at certain ceremonies involving the Red Wings and/or NHL. The guy played professionally through 5 decades from the late 1940's right up until 1980; to say he was a "giant" in the hockey world is putting it lightly.

Dearest Edna, I must leave you. Why, I cannot say. Where, you cannot know. How I will get there, I haven't decided yet. But one thing I can tell you, any time I hear the wind blow it will whisper the name Edna. And so let us part with a love that will echo through the ages. ---Woodrow

Guy was an outright in legend, always in control and always had made space and lines to play in. He was untouchable.

RIP Mr. Hockey

RIP Mr. Hockey

I've only ever seen a couple of highlight reels of his play from back in the day but older gents I take the time to listen to said he was a complete player. Technically skilled, strong, and tough. I understand he was never the one to play dirty or start a fight but if other players started bullying or went looking to fight he wouldn't hesitate to sort that shit out-- My uncle saw him play at Maple Leaf Gardens in the late 50s and said he cold-cocked a Leafs player who was throwing elbows at his ribs. Howe gave the guy a warning to stop it but the dude kept on throwing elbows so Howe turned around, took off his glove, held it and his stick in the other hand, knocked the guy out in one punch then put his glove back on and skated away.

And players today? Is sissy bitch Sydney Crosby anything like that? If anything he's likely to be the clown throwing the elbows. Except he'd go crying he's the one getting picked on.

RIP Gordie Howe.

Sad day for the Hockey world.

I'm honored that I was able to meet Mr. Howe and shake his hand after a game in Los Angeles in 79.

One of my all time favorite players and a wonderful inspiration.

Goodbye Mr. Hockey.

3 athletes in the space of a week. Damn.

A boxing legend. A hockey legend. A backyard bareknuckle legend.

EDIT: Not that I'm putting Kimbo Slice exactly in the same league as these two other sport-defining gods-among-men, but that dude made a definitive mark in a genre nonetheless.

Man, this has been a bad week in the world of sports. Gordie Howe kept hockey relevant and increased its popularity.

The Gordie Howe hat trick is boss: score a goal, record an assist, and get in a fight, all in one game.

Reporter: What keeps you awake at night?
General James "Mad Dog" Mattis: Nothing, I keep other people awake at night.
