Another plus one for Narcos here.

I liked watching the first ep of Designated Survivor this week. (A "smart" beta becomes president after all the alpha's got blown the fuck up.)

1. Don Draper's the man, good at what he does, gets what he wants, wife and kids, gets action on the side

2. Traditional sex roles (except for ambitious Peggy)

3. Behind-the-scenes look at the early advertising business. This is the part that grabbed me the most.

4. Shows the 60s in a different light

5. Smoking, drinking, kids playing with plastic bags

The downside: the series gets more soap opera-y with each season. I never saw the last one or two.

Just finished it a couple days ago, overall I was a big fan of the series would rate it 4.5/5 stars, I will say my one complaint is that I feel it started off really strong, but kind of faded at the end, not saying the ending sucked, but personally I was more pulled in and engaged by the first 4 episodes than the last 4.

RE: The TV Series Thread
Fringe was good - X Files type of show.

The Blacklist is decent - FBI working with a fugitive to take down other fugitives to further his own agenda.

Strike Back - British special forces / intelligence show based on Chris Ryan's books.

Supernatural

Significantly older shows:

Porridge - Ronnie Barker was an excellent comedian

Yes Minister / Yes Prime Minister

I recently saw the pilot episode (90 minutes long) of the Netflix series: THE GET DOWN. It's a musical/rap drama set in the Bronx in the 70s. I can't decide if it's brilliant or just weird. I'll check out another episode.

Breaking news: It hasn't been picked up for a second season: http://www.morningledger.com/the-get-dow.../13105668/

Not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but Borgia kicks all sorts of ass.

Anyone who likes Robert Greene or 48 Laws of Power will definitely enjoy it. One of my current favorites actually.

I didn't think I'd like it. I don't care for much paranormal psychic stuff. But the acting is stellar and the whole series is movie quality. Like a Spielberg movie. And I think they need to get rid of the monster. Don't like it and it adds nothing to the show. And it's not believable.

Narcos is fucking GREAT. Watch that shit.

If you haven't seen Louie, that's some funny shit. His show can get pretty dark, but it's still very funny.

If you have Netflix (I assume you do) then Jim Jeffries is one of the funniest guys that has ever done standup. I liked him better when he was drunk onstage, but I tend to appreciate drinkers.

RE: The TV Series Thread
I'd love to see people always give a take on the level of SJW/feminist/grrl power content. That's the biggest things I'm looking for here that wouldn't be found elsewhere. I'm a little suspect after seeing people rec Game of Thrones ... it's high production value, and has its strong points, but I quit watching it after a while because I couldn't hold my nose past the grrl power any longer. I wouldn't recommend that to anyone here.

I'm tempted to try Mad Men now after seeing recs here. I have avoided that one. When it first started, it seemd like the media was on a big propaganda kick of depicting life in the 1970's-ish era and showing how horrible and sexist everything was ... as if to indoctrinate all the young women with the idea that everything back in those days was the dark ages. There seems to be a formula where men are all treat women horribly, especially in the workplace, and the women are portrayed as smarter than the men but never being taken seriously, just being insulted and degraded all the time. I figure it's all a propaganda push to set a frame for women when they hear any man talk about how things have been getting worse. If Mad Men is actually not just part of that, maybe its worthwhile.

Louie CK? He's funny, has his moments, I do watch his current show, but he is really, really SJW-friendly and anti-male in my opinion. Although at times he seems borderline brilliant, he specializes in self-deprecating "I'm a pathetic middle aged man and I really suck (like all of us men)" humor. He tends to be about as cucked as cucked can be (in the modern sense of the word that doesn't require you to have any active romantic relationship at all.) His older show "Lucky Louie" could be linked in a dictionary under "cucked". Maybe it's all an act and in real life he's a dominant man with 2 women blowing him every night, I don't know, but overall he is just adding to the problem as far as I can tell.

RE: The TV Series Thread
Here is my in-depth on a couple of titles I saw mentioned, plus one I haven't:

Yes Minister / Yes Prime Minister - Can't rec this enough, one of my favorite comedy series ever. It's old enough that SJW/fem stuff isn't a big part of it one way or another. It's just really well written and a realistic take on politics that anyone who has worked in a big bureacratic organization will recognize. When I think of the most realistic depictions of politics, I think of Yes Minister and The Wire. The first series was better than the second, if you enjoy the first you will still like the second one.

Justified - One of my recent favorites, just finished the series. It's one of those that can be unrealistic as far as what the main character gets away with as a cop, in that way that is kind of porn for all of us who get sick of BS and would like to just grab someone and knock their head against the wall sometimes. He gets away with a lot of that. There is a lot of really good dialogue and realistic, interesting relationships between masculine male characters. It's mostly ok from a SJW/fem point of view, although the lead puts up with a lot of garbage from women that he would not from men ... there's an element of that "strong guy but can be led around by the nose by women" to it, but for recent years that's about as good as it gets. One of the main characters is a female marshall who is kind of a badass, but not in an unrealistic way by modern standards, and they don't feel the need to make her tougher than the men, she just holds her own. She's a black woman surrounded by southern white guys mostly, so she serves token purposes, but they don't play up SJW angles much.

The Unit - this one was a pleasant surprise for me, I tried it because at the time it was streaming free on Amazon with Prime. Now you have to pay on Amazon, or get DVDs from Netflix. It's a pretty decent show, supposedly based on some reality of delta force. From a plot, action standpoint it's probably just average ... not up to the production value of an HBO series ... in one particular episode where they got into a real full scale battle, instead of typical special ops small unit stuff, you could really see their budget limitations showing. However, the plus side is you can tell that it's a show that at least tried to be realistic about male-female roles ... didn't have a grrl power super ninja girl on the team or anything like that. Good relationships between the men. It tries to satisfy the female angle by spending serious amounts of time on "the home front" showing things that the wives/girlfriends are going through back home while the men are out fighting. IMO you can almost tell over time that the people making that show were trying to make small concessions to the SJW community in order to stay on the air. It lasted 4 seasons, I'm currently watching the 4th. I liked the first 2 seasons the best. I'm probably not selling it well, but I think it's worth checking out if it sounds the least interesting ... like I said, at least they tried. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Unit

The Last Ship is pretty good. It gets cheesy at times and the acting is rather bland, but I like the post-apocalyptic setting as well as the story, which gets more interesting with every episode. Currently Season 3 has finished airing, can't wait for Season 4 next summer.

RE: The TV Series Thread
I would recommend Black Sails.

Set as a prequel to the novel Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. The programme focuses on Captain Flint and his crew during the golden age of pirates. As you can imagine there are strong male characters in particular that of Captain Flint. What I particularly liked is how John Silver's character grows and rises to prominence in some cases by luck and in others based on self realisation and his own determination.

There are of course female characters too some of whom play an important role in shaping the story. Thankfully, there is very in the way of feminism as one would expect of a programme that aims to depict life in this period of time but what is of interest that the often "fickle" nature of women is clearly on view for all to see.

I'll do a recommendation for a show to AVOID.

Very British Problems, on Netflix.
It sounds innocent enough--oh look I can learn about the quirks of the people and see what makes them tick!

No.

First, this show is about the worst sort of cringeworthy beta awkwardness and social avoidance you can ever imagine.
Then, since that is not enough, they go full SJW and include every affirmative action character on anti discrimination list--every fatass, fag, amputee, brit and not.
Why would you include someone in a TV program with cerebral palsy, who cannot speak who has to speak at length to explain themselves?
It was more of a Bizarro world, an exhibition of disabilities more than cultural quirks.

At one point I caught myself thinking about the old order in Mad Max, where everyone in power was a horribly diseased, mangled, ugly mess and lorded their power over people.
G-d, what has Britain become...

RE: The TV Series Thread
I just watched 6 (of 13) episodes of "Luke Cage". At first I didn't recognize or remember the character until the backstory episode, when he briefly donned the costume from the 70's, then I recalled it. I never actually read much of his series, but I think I remember a run-in he had with punisher.
Anyways, so far the series is great, and I do enjoy the tie-ins via conversational dialogue about the other marvel universe stuff, like the aliens in new york, silver hammer, green monster, daredevil mentions, and a character from the daredevil series that I won't spoil just in case. I like the story so far, and I think netflix is just hitting it out of the park with the two marvel series I've watched (daredevil and this). I haven't seen the jessica jones series, and I never read or even knew of her comics.
As much as I've watched it, Luke Cage is a great series.

I'm 4 episodes in and Luke Cage is pretty fun. Not as good as Daredevil season 1 (though that was *amazing* and a very high bar to meet), but better than Daredevil season 2 and Jessica Jones.

I'm late to the party with Peaky Blinders but am nearly finished with season one. This is the best 1920's era gangster film/series i've seen so far. I don't know if the quality drops later but it's solid so far. If you like old timey gangster shit which is set in the slums of industrial Britain then this will be right up your alley.

Arguably better than Boardwalk Empire ever was.

edit: I also had no fucking clue that Sam Neill was NOT American until I saw this series. Mind blown.

this bullshit based on profiling like in "Lie to me" but in a more boring and useless way with statistiques sent in the watcher faace each time they can

And this amazing crap, the trailer talk for itself:

Tell them too much, they wouldn't understand; tell them what they know, they would yawn.
They have to move up by responding to challenges, not too easy not too hard, until they paused at what they always think is the end of the road for all time instead of a momentary break in an endless upward spiral
