I'm a fan of Arch Linux. Just so much shit to customize, plus no need to worry about privacy and corporations getting your data.

I've been meaning to run a VM of arch on my desktop. I tried to install it a while ago on my laptop but there was a shit ton of config to do so I just went back to ubuntu. I do want to try Arch though, any tips?

The wiki has a shitload of information on how to install it - the shell might scare off some noobs at first, but once you get the hang of it, you can make an Arch installation all my memory. You have to do everything yourself: set up full disk encryption, install the packages, configure the bootloader, install a desktop environment, install the needed fonts, etc. but it feels like home way more than the other distros I've tried - perhaps because I'm a huge fan of DIY stuff.
