Most countries don't usually hand out really long prison sentences like they do in the US. 20 years is considered extremely long.

In the US, you can get 10 or 15 years (or longer) for robbery or even for drug dealing. Murder and rape are almost always automatic life or at least 25-to-life sentences. That is why we consider 20 years for murder to be too short.

I wouldn't mind if this particular woman stayed behind bars for life, but there are issues with countries like the US that hand out long sentences. There are plenty of people in the US who lose decades of their life over something stupid they did as kids. There are even plenty of non-violent drug dealers serving life sentences. I think that's ridiculous. I wouldn't mind having murderers like this woman set free after 20 years if it meant petty criminals would not be locked up for decades.

PS I'm not one of these liberals who thinks prison is "too cruel" or whatever. I think prison should be somewhat "cruel." My problem is with the amount of time people are serving, and the rights they will forever lose when they get out.

You seem to think we either have to punish everything severly or everything lightly.

Victimless crimes like selling and consuming illegal drugs are illegitimate and should not exist. I'm generally for very lenient punishments if there is reason to believe the person will be reformed. Especially if the crime is non-violent.

However, extreme violent cases like this cold blooded murder I am for the death penalty. I am not swayed by the arguments for second chances, nobody wants to associate with this lunatic if she were to be released back into society and it is a waste of taxpayer money to keep them in prison for a long time.

The poster above that mentioned these SEA countries hang you for drug trafficking, but this bitch gets 20 is spot on. This is stupid, nonsensical and dangerous: it literally signals to society that it is better to kill another human being than to deal in drugs that the state arbitrarily decided was not okay.

I'm don't think we "have to" punish everything lightly or everything severely, that just seems to be what naturally happens. Countries that have lenient penalties for drugs also tend to have (relatively) lenient penalties for murder, and the opposite is true for countries with harsh penalties. All I'm saying is I would rather live in a country with lenient penalties than harsh ones, even if that means letting murderers go free after 20 years, although I know a lot of people would disagree.

The ideal would be to have no drug laws, lenient penalties for petty crimes like shoplifting, and harsh penalties for cold-blooded murder, but that kind of system doesn't seem to exist anywhere.

Also, something to think about: I would have no problem with sending this woman to prison for life, but what about a guy who finds his wife cheating and kills both of them? What about a guy who kills his daughter's (violent) rapist? What about the young inner-city guy who kills a gang member after that gang member shot and killed his buddy? Should those guys get life in prison?
