RE: Inside/Outside Sales Datasheet
Never mind, I was finally able to score an interview with a startup with pretty decent base pay.

I'll let everyone know how it goes I guess. Any further interview tips?

RE: Inside/Outside Sales Datasheet
July is my 4th month in this role and I'm surprised time has passed so quickly. In June I was ramped up to quota. I did my first demo this month, 2 months early, and I haven't had to pick up the phone yet to cold call. Eventually I'll get there, but calls aren't set up yet at the office.

Before the summer months, recruiters contacted me for similar roles/management at new saas companies. I'm excited to see what the interest is starting september when I'll have 6 months under my belt.

With how this month is going, I might exceed quota next month.

Great to hear. Doing demos is a powerful step that other employers will appreciate.

I'm curious though...you've been there four months and haven't cold called? Are you mostly inbound?

Also, hell yeah:

I think I posted similar a few pages back. It's really amazing - once they see you're actually a BDR, they assume you're successful, and start poaching you for jobs!

RE: Inside/Outside Sales Datasheet
Thanks Redbeard!

I'm strictly outbound. The reason why I haven't cold called is because we haven't set up the backend to do international calls. We also don't have a script for it either. The software is Paas and that value prop is hard to articulate (we don't have a finalized one either). In a few months I'll hit the phones, it's getting there.

Yeah I think you mentioned that. Hiring really slowed in the summer, from the earlier pages in this thread it seems like it picks back up for fall season, dies down Dec to Feb, and picks back up in March. In Toronto, recruiters love it if you have BDR experience.

RE: Inside/Outside Sales Datasheet
When you get to cold calling...of all things...please use a script.

A bunch of my coworkers try to wing it, explaining that "it's more natural!"

When they ultimately fumble over their words and get hung up on, I just laugh.

The funny thing about using a script is that most people use a script, even if it's not written down. More or less, cold callers say the same exact thing to every prospect. There's just a few tweaks.

So instead of winging it, nail down what you're going to say and knock the delivery out of the park.

RE: Inside/Outside Sales Datasheet
On top of Redbeard's excellent comment, you should also have a rough question/statement funnel, decision tree or possible flow chart for potential conversations. This could be all in your head, or written down if it helps.

More so than an exact script, this will allow you the flexibility to objection handle and show your value. Eventually you should be able to lead the conversation where you want it, while also responding confidently to virtually any point the client brings up. This will also lend itself to more natural conversations, rather than sounding like a outright sales pitch.

@lebeau
Thank you for the amazing advice. It sounds very useful to have decision trees that map out the conversation. It will take me some time to generate the paths, put it together, and rehearse it enough that it becomes second nature on a call.
