Any thoughts on Applied Materials (AMAT)?
It´s supposed to be one of the stocks to watch for 2018 and its down 10,5% in the last month.
Could be a decent time to enter.

Overall +58% YTD.

I would be more inclined to invest in fast growing, innovative companies that could return over 500% in the next few years and that are under the radar for most investors. Some examples :

Alteryx (AYX)
The Trade Desk (TTD)
Noah (NOAH)
Nutanix (NTNX)
Varonis Systems (VRNS)

Mind doing a write-up on which of the above you think has the best "Home Run" potential if you have some money to play with and wouldn't lose any sleep over if you crap out?

Seems like AI is really bursting at the seems. Has not really even had a initial bubble phase even though neural nets have proven to be useful. Google has developed tensor chips that calculate neural network matrices much more efficiently, and will be opening them up to the cloud. Anyone here have any thoughts on this topic?
At the current time it seems the amount of researchers who are versed in this topic is limited as until 3 years ago neural nets were dismissed. This can be an internet 1994 moment. The limited availability of researchers means amazon and google are hogging the talent and will be the first to develop platforms for this. Thinking about moving in on them even though they seem over valued.

the way to think about google Ai is they are trying to sell it as a service (value added)whereas NVDIA they are trying to sell it as hardware (currently the #1). There are more risk that even though NVDIA is dominant right now, there might be more players in the future that might compete with them and therefore the profits are competed away. So I think amazon and google are doing the right thing by not selling the chips and instead integrate their AI products into their cloud service.

It will be interesting to see how a cannabis legislation in Canada will affect the
"Horizons Marijuana Life Sciences index ETF".

Its supposed to happen around June/July 2018.

The ETF has generated 60% in the last three months, but also fell 20-25% from the launch in April until the beginning of September.

High risk, high reward I guess..

You really should do your own research, but Nutanix is a big player in hyper-converged infrastructure : https://seekingalpha.com/article/4129464...oming-swan

Nutanix and The Trade Desk would be my two picks out of the 5 above.

RE: 2017 Stock Market thread
Finally taking some of my own advice and everyone else's. I'm going to diversify my portfolio a little bit. Up til now eveything has been in high risk stocks and cryptos. I'm going to throw a chunk into an S&P 500 Index and then continue to dollar cost average into it.

I'm looking into the following five:
SPYG -SPDR Portfolio S&P 500 Growth ETF
VFINX -Vanguard 500 Index Investor
SWPPX -Shwab S&P 500 Index
FUSEX -Fidelity 500 Index Investor
PREIX -T. Rowe Price Equity Index 500
While there are differences in expense ratio, holdings turnover and net assets I basically am viewing all these the same. I'm leaning towards SPYG just for ease of getting into it with my Robinhood app and the zero fees. Anyone have a major reason why one is better than another or another fund that is even better?

While researching those above I found two that are 3x leveraged:
SPXL -Direxion Daily S&P 500 Bull 3X ETF
UPRO -ProShares UltraPro S&P500
If the S&P 500 indexes are such sureshot winners over the long haul is there any reason not to go into them with 3x leverage? I tried reading into them a little and it talked about them being used more for the short term quick turn around gains. Just having trouble wrapping my head around why these wouldnt also be better for the long haul than the straight S&P 500 indexes?

Thanks for any help and if anyone is interested in the zero fees on the Robinhood app pm me and I can shoot you a referral and we'll both get a free stock!

In regards to your first question I haven't looked over the ETfs but if their goal is to mirror the S&P so its not really a big deal though I would pick one with high assets and a low MER, like the SPY.

In regards to the leveraged question these ETF's use futures and other products to help 'leverage' returns, but long term returns are not exactly what it states if it is 2X or 3X. Generally they will have some decay over time (will loose a bit of their value). This is why most people generally don't hold these products long term. Probably safer than crypto though!

Just doing a quick update on my basket on innovation stocks I put out here on the forum 10 weeks ago.

Returns on 3 of them since then have been great:

Alteryx (AYX) 25%
The Trade Desk (TTD) 11%
Noah (NOAH) 3%
Nutanix (NTNX) 2%
Varonis Systems (VRNS) 18%

Damn that Alteryx was a good buy! I need to find some decent stocks to offset Rite-Aid and LendingClub, those 2 have been really shitty for me over the last year.

Yeah Alteryx is an amazing company.

Also great to see Nutanix announced an excellent quarter last Fri, and it's share price is up 25% since then :

https://seekingalpha.com/article/4154165...ng-station

Love these companies that most investors have not heard of, but are smashing it every quarter.

No insider info, but I spend an hour per day following thought leaders in tech.

For example this recent blog post by the Arista Networks (ANET) CEO, has put Pure Storage (PSTG) on my watch list :

https://blogs.arista.com/blog/-the-futur...networking

("AI servers together with an Arista leaf-and-spine network and storage appliances can form an important AI nucleus. We have tested these solutions with NVIDIA and Pure Storage to offer the highest IO density per appliance. ")

Arista is rapidly disrupting the massive market share of Cisco (CSCO).

Data is the new oil, so I have been investing heavily in the cognitive cloud companies.

RE: 2017 Stock Market thread
Thanks for sharing BB1.

I have been studying the chart of Alteryx. I feel like there is a good chance that there should be a pull back from/around 40.20 or before. Now, I have to study its balance sheet/income statement to see whether it is good enough for me to buy during its possible pull back (thought the chart says it should keep increasing after the pull back)

The usual disclaimer. My analysis is a probabilistic assessment based on technical analysis so the stock might pass 40.20 without a pull back. Then, I determine the next resistance level for myself. Do not buy/sell based on my analysis.

My impression is the stock market is too high to be investing at this point.

Do others see it differently?

Also...

I would love to do some riskier punts on potential 5x type opportunities.

However, I don’t want to spend time researching and learning invetsing. It’s just not practical for me right now.

Are there any tips services or similar I could follow and punt on?

I do not take any notice of charts or other technical analysis. I only look at how the business is operating. For example in the 4th quarter alone, Facebook, Netflix, and PayPal all became Alteryx customers.

But please keep in mind that Alteryx IPO'ed less than 1 year ago at $14. Current share price is $38.

There is a good chance we are in the middle of a secular bull market that still has years left to run.

A few thoughts I've not researched much:

- Airports with big in/out-flows of migrant workers and tourists and room for a new terminal
- Budget airlines with room to grow; hold WizzAirr, up over 100% YTD
- IVF, growing international market and likely at home due to male soyification, though PEs very high
- Chinese tech, growing market
- Food Panda / Delivery Hero, suspicious of their poor financials though suspect they will have good growth
- Gardening is the No. 1 hobby in the US and with an aging pop. and low cost of products it will likely grow and with cross over the the potential US cannabis market
- Genealogy is the No. 2 hobby in the US, Ancestry is meant to be IPO-ing soon. They have recently had massive growth in DNA kits, selling more in the last 12 months than all genealogy kits sold by any company prior; you can buy Ancestry via the stock of one company that has a big share; French genealogy company, Filae, has had some good growth, traded on a small cap EURO exchange or can be bought as part of that exchange's NAV
- Some company that sells whatever useless tat hipster millennials buy, so I can profit from the ends of their family line
- Work online brokerages like Freelancer, their financials look poor, but they are rallying after a big dip
- VISA, Mastercard - global growth
- Exposure to high-growth tourism destinations: Thailand, SPain, Mexico, Ivory Coast, all of South America, Japan, UAE, Oman
- Chinese Netflix: iQiyi IPO
- Companies that sell diapers to developing countries (one of the few things poor people buy); also baby food
- Companies that build automation devices to replace human workers
- 3D printing
- Companies that sell gym equipment to developing countries

iQiyi will start trading on 29 March with ticker IQ.

Yes, it is China's leading video-streaming platform, with more than 400 million active users and 50 million paid subscribers. The average user spends nearly two hours daily on iQiyi.

By the way, I am just putting this info out - not a recommendation to buy shares.

I already own a shitload of Baidu (BIDU) shares, which will retain a controlling ownership of iQiyi after the IPO.
