"Near Death" Experience
Hopefully the quotations in the title were enough to let anyone reading know that this near death experience is probably not as near death as most near death experiences and certainly not as cool or exhilarating as other near death experiences, but it is a recurring dilemma that I seem to be having and I'm hoping someone in the forum might have advice.

That is, today, and one morning prior to today, I have woken up and burped (not always in that order) and next thing I know, I'm choking on vomit weezing and fucking gasping for air. So much so that I immediately stand up out of my bed and start running around in a panic. Shortly after standing up the choking usually subsides but I'm afraid one day I might not be so lucky.

I was driving home from work today after working two hours overtime (kinda shitty working second shift) from a shitty ass day at a shitty ass job when I remembered what happened this morning. I remember the fucking fear that runs through my body and the cold sweat that covers my skin. I don't even think choking like that hurts, it's just terrifying. It made the shitty day seem less significant.

Anyways, I don't know, is this heartburn or what? I ate some chocolate and drank an ensure last night before bed. Has this ever happened to anyone? How did you guys avoid it? Should I go to a doctor? This is the second, or maybe third time, this has happened in the last year, and shits kinda gettin sketchy, lol.

Yes get yourself to the doctor asap. As you said this is recurring, and if you wait, you might not be so lucky next time.

Maybe do a sleep study?

You need to ask your doctor if you need a A-PAP or C-PAP machine. You might have sleep apnea. Get that checked out right away, because it can be very dangerous if not treated.

1 - go to the fucking doctor

2 - stop eating things before bed. A full stomach starts leaking into your esophagus and eats through stuff there. Can back all the way into your mouth and prematurely eat away your teeth as well as cause other issues.

RE: "Near Death" Experience
I had something similar thing happen where I burped and a bubble of stomach acid came up. Got a nasty, "choking cough" and worse it made my voice ragged for a few days. Anytime i'm about to burp at night i do it sitting up now to avoid this.

It's a mixture of GIRD (acid reflex) which probably went down your wind pipe hence the gagging and coughing. You won't die, but you could potentially get pnumonia with all of that gunk flowing into your stomach.

Stop smoking tobacco and drinking alcohol. I would consider not consuming anything past 8pm at night. In the morning when you wake up, immediately drink some water.

If the acid is still recurring, consider temporarily taking a proton pump inhibitor.

Finally, don't psych yourself out when recalling your days events!

Shalom Alechem!

RE: "Near Death" Experience
That ain't a Near Death Experience like seeing Angels calling for you to come with them.

You need to check-up with a doctor on Sleep Neap or GERD. Chocking during sleep is unusual unless you describing Sleep Paralysis.

I can clearly remember the insane amount of times I got Sleep Paralysis while studying in Toronto. I would usually call on Jesus name & the crap subsides.

Paranormal people claim that sleep paralysis is caused by negative entities & demons, but since you ain't got that, you just got to get tested for GERD or Sleep Apnea so that you don't end up being called by the Angels of Death which is common on true NDE.

RE: "Near Death" Experience
This is something that happens when you eat too close to bed time. Your body relaxes, and the content starts to come back up. This happened to me a couple of times in the past, and now I would rather go to bed hungry than ever eat a late meal. Besides, going to bed on a full stomach is awful on many levels.

Anyway, it is a scary as fuck way to wake up. But this is actually your body alerting you to the problem. Your airway is temporarily constricted, but it wakes you and saves you from actually choking in your sleep. The main thing is to keep your head. Once you are upright and slowly pull in one breath, you’re over the worst of it and your throat will relax.

I recently had an (unplanned) late meal and went through this. You’ll want a lozenge if you have one because your throat will hurt for a while. This time around, it occurred to me to go to the sink and spit any phlegm I could. Your normal throat mucus gets saturated with stomach acid and your throat will continue to burn until you do this. After that, you might have a little trouble getting back to sleep because your survival mechanism probably threw a little adrenaline your way.

Sorry if that was TMI, but I sympathize with Ocon on this one. I’m a John Bonham fan, but I don’t wanna end up like him. (Of course, you can’t really dust for vomit, can you?)

RE: "Near Death" Experience
I feel your pain man. I had a spell of this a few years back. It would happen a couple times a year for a few years and it wasn't fun. It was quite the trip instantly waking in a panic suffocating and choking on vomit and no matter how hard you try to suck in air, you just wheez as chunks of vomit get rammed down your lungs. Then after 15-30 seconds of wheezing, air starts moving back in. Then followed by at lest a day of anxiety feeling. Fucking sucks.

I was about 25 lbs over weight at the time and had bad heartburn all of the time. I'm staying away from anything that would give me heartburn and am in shape now and I haven't had this happen for years luckily.

I'd definitely recommenced a doctor too.

I agree. Although you missed a good character moment while talking about near death moments.

I used to have out of body and other strange experiences similar to what I read about in near death experiences when I used to dip my blunts in PCP from my late teens until I was around 21. That was when I smoked too much.

When I smoked less I got buckwild and whatnot, watch the COPs tv show for the general idea.

RE: "Near Death" Experience
God damn that Ivan Drago gif got me good, hahah.

Thanks for all the help. I'll definitely contact the doctor - I just hate calling them and having them have me come in and tell me I'm fine which has happened a few times. I guess it's better than choking to death.

Now that it's happened 2-3 time, with this being 2 or 3, I'm fucking terrified of sleeping, lol. But I'll try not to eat late at night which sucks because I work second shift in a fucking clean room so I literally can't eat for hours. Again, probably better than choking to death.

That is Acid Reflux. I have it. It only acts up when I eat stuff my stomach doesn't like. Curry does it 100% of the time.

And yes, it really sucks to wake up like that.

RE: "Near Death" Experience
Haven't contacted a doctor yet, but a friend of mine slept over and said I snored when I was sleeping. I never knew I snored. I was with a girl for a very long time and she never said I snored. I had told him about my near death experience and he said at one point I stopped snoring so he sat up to make sure I was still breathing, He said at one point I woke myself up because I was coughing. I think I vaguely remember doing so, but I'm not sure what came first, waking up and coughing or waking up because I was coughing. Anyways, I'm probably gunna die.

OP, this is not a NDE and you're not gonna die.
You just eat too much before bed and have acid reflux.

- Don't eat 3 to 4 hours before bed
- Avoid aliments with fat, especially in the afternoon
- Avoid large meals

And go see a Fucking doctor, it could get worse (I've been there).

Actually, it's not that slow. When the really bad symptoms start, it will be a matter of days. Until then, life goes on for me. My hunch is that I'll die sometime in May. My hunches with this cancer have almost always come to fruition.

Yeah Mercenary I was joking. I know about the Private Man. If you noticed, I put near death in quotations and tried to explain it as a recurring dilemma rather than actually being near death.

But yes there's no doubt in my mind he is more of a man than me.

RE: "Near Death" Experience
Haha OP I clicked on this thread hoping for an actual near death experience or close shave. Sounds like you just got acid reflux man, if you're on any unnecessary medication, stop taking it and get on a low carb diet. I often get vomity burps if I eat carbs before bed, especially chocolate.

As for real NDE, I've had a couple.

One time I was kayaking down some rapids in the French alps I was hanging back from the main group a little way. Ahead some French guys had thrown a rope in the water to use to pull themselves across. As I paddled past, this rope came across my kayak and wrapped itself around my waist. Somehow it managed to tie itself into a slip knot and then pulled tight. The current was strong and immediately tipped my boat over. So now I was upside down in my kayak with my head underwater and my waist tied up. I tried over and again to Eskimo roll upright but every time the rope pulled tight and the water pushed me under again.

Now I was in a tight spot. My group was far downstream and there was nobody around to help me. I couldn't undo the rope because it was buried in tight underneath my bouyancy aid. I had no knife on me to cut the rope and I was running out of air so I had to make a decision. I considered bailing out but decided against it because I knew the current would push me down to the bottom of the river with this rope tied around me.

I had spent a lot of energy and not managed to get any breath so now my body was screaming at me to breathe or die. As a last resort I dropped the paddle, got some superhuman strength from somewhere and hand rolled the boat. From there I was able to (still in the kayak, on its side) use my arms to front crawl the kayak to the shore, against the current. To this day I have no idea how I managed it.

I caught up with the group afterwards and told them what happened. Nobody believed me. I still think if I had bailed out instead of thinking fast and swimming the kayak I would have drowned right there in that river.

Humans are fragile man.
