Because the NK's can't hit the USA, and Japan is our friend.

North Korea considers Japan an enemy. Of all the major targets within their reach currently, Tokyo is probably the most likely.

Quote: If there's a nuclear conflict and the Us attacks NK, will that have consequences for Japan?

Yes, but don't cancel your tickets yet. You'll know next week what the situation is, because the supposed nuclear test is very soon. If the nuclear test never occurs, or occurs without any intervention from the West, you should be safe to just go on your trip. If things escalate, it'll be immediately obvious that things have escalated, and you can adjust your plans then.

Well, we can put this into terms that are more relevant, I think.
Would I take a 30% pay cut to save the entire population of Texas, Utah, Arizona, and Nevada from being tortured and put into death camps for 50 years?

Yes, yes I would, and I would look down on anybody who wouldn't take that deal.

A reasonable position except that for a lot of people, taking a 30% haircut would put them and their family on the street with the rest of the NorKs.

But your post highlights an unfortunate position the first world has entered into. We have become so politically jaded, cynical and bureaucratic that we have ceased to be able to fathom sacrifice for others purely on the merit of humanitarianism. We regard evil as something to be crushed, but not if it cripples our portfolio, in no small measure because we no longer believe that the powers that be will actually stop the evil they claim to have a mandate against but will simply replace it with another evil more in step with their plans for global domination.

To my mind intervention in NK is different from intervention in the ME because when we intervene in the ME we claim to be liberating them from this man or that man when in reality the evil in their midst is islam, and if we don't liberate them from that then we have only made the problem worse.

The NorKs can be ideologically reformed in less than two generations. So could muslims, but since communism is marked as a political ideology and islam skated under that bar and scraped into the safe zone of "religion" it's completely off limits. As such we can fix the NorKs if we accepted the premise of a moral obligation, while fucking around in the ME is a waste of time for as long as freedom of religion protects their hostile political ideology.

Regardless, whether liberating the NorKs is worth this sacrifice or that sacrifice is tricky to say. The fallout (no pun intended) of dealing with that issue is extremely unpredictable. We might pay a hard price or we might be utterly crippled for a generation or more. As I mentioned elsewhere, even if they turf a nuke straight into the sky (no guidance whatsoever) and detonate it a few minutes or seconds later, the EMP effect would give every nation in the surrounding area a very bad start to the 21st century.

Hey, I'm all for countries looking out for their national interest, but this so-called "status quo" in South Korea involves the US military babysitting them for nearly 70 years.

If they wanted some say in what happens to North Korea, they should have built a military in the multiple generations that have passed since the last time Seoul was invaded.

Does Japan have any means to defend itself against an attack by NK? What would that attack likely be?

If NK hurt the surrounding seas and fuck up the sushi that's from there I will personally face fuck Kim with a bazooka.

Do you think she could get in trouble for streaming this by NK? Is she in NK or Tokyo? I doubt the NK's will be so accommodating to her in the future as a journalist.

The attack would be a nuclear weapon, along with a series of low-level terrorist attacks by North Korean agents in major cities like Tokyo. I would expect to see chemical weapons or biological weapons used in subways, reminiscent of the Aum Shinryikyo attack in the 90s, as well as possibly attacks on water or power facilities.

Japan's primary weakness is its subway/train system, which is used by some immense fraction of the population. A biological weapons attack in particular there would have absolutely devastating consequences. If you could spread some kind of infectious agent in something like Shinjuku station, which probably has well over a million passengers a day, the casualties would be immense.

There would NOT be any kind of land invasion. NK doesn't have that kind of power and their boats would get flattened before they got within a thousand miles of Honshu.

My personal suspicion is that Japan/America's anti-missile defenses are further along than is publicly announced, and that any missile would be shot down. I don't think there's a lot to worry about.

Still, watching and seeing.

There's so much us military in Japan and south Korea that nothing will touch Japan from n Korea. Every us military installation has some type of missile defense. Then those countries have their own stuff on top of that. Remember the patriot missile? Stuff like that is probably up and running at every base over there.

Also, its nice to hear that someone is so passionate about sushi fish.

The Japanese take this shit extremely seriously. There are notices about "heightened security measures" at most train stations, along with signs warning you about unattended baggage. It's mostly a run-up to the Olympics, I think, but I'm certain that their primary fear is North Koreans. I would be absolutely astonished if there weren't NK sleeper cells in Tokyo, too. There's a sizable number of Koreans living there, and god knows they've had long enough to get them established.

When I was there a while back, I kinda laughed at the anti-North Korea and anti-terrorism signs. Japan feels so safe, with its 9-year olds walking about unaccompanied, that it seemed like something out of another world.

It doesn't seem like as much of a joke now.

There is no country called North Korea.
It's official name is the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, or DPRK for short.

NK doesn't have to hit any city for the world to have a collective spasm. Fire nukes at the borders and you'll have irradiated areas no-one wants to come near. If its a ground hit and not airburst the results will be even worse.

I wonder if they have cobalt.
