Here's a comprehensive one they did about the global financial collapse called Meltdown (four-part series):

You can find parts 2-4 in the margins. The insights are truly groundbreaking. Shit you won't find on CNN.

This is one they did on the top 1% (25-min clip)

Other documentaries I like in general are:

The Ascent of Money by Niall Ferguson (epic):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Xx_5PuLIzc

The War on Democracy by John Pilger (fascinating glimpse into the history of American imperialism in Latin America):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtZcjt28Oxg

Though not really a documentary, this interview with the author of Confessions of an Economic Hitman is eye-opening. I actually know John Perkins and have met up with him twice in the Bay Area (see attached pic). He's got some wild stories:

If I think of any more, I'll revisit this thread and drop some links.

I've been meaning to check out Confessions of an Economic Hitman for some time, but I admit that I'm very skeptical. I work in this field and it's one thing to say that the world of international finance and development is screwed up, but it's another to say that it's purposefully so and there are people behind the scenes orchestrating it.

Hen, I'm curious to hear your opinion on this. Is this guy telling the straight truth or is he simplifying a really complex narrative?

I would say watch his interview first. It's mentions the issues raised in the book and the interviewer asks him questions that might also be on your mind. Let me know what you think afterwards. There's some very interesting occurrences, such as the deaths of the President of Ecuador and Panama, respectively, within a week apart and by the same method.

They Killed Sister Dorothy - an American nun who had been living in Brazil for 40 yrs was shot 6 times. The documentary focuses on the trial of the rancher who set up her death. Thumbs up from me.

The Man Whose Arms Exploded

You can view it on youtube. It's a cautionary tale about steroid use, how society since the 70s has become obsessed with perfect male physique, and how people like Arnold Swartzenegger are responsible for it. The middle has some pretty graphic blood and gore scenes(which you can guess from the title) as a result of prolonged steroid usage. Pretty interesting doc. Here's part I.

Several guys have mentioned this already, but I'll do it again: Cocaine Cowboys is a must see.

Here's the whole thing:

And the sequel:

Know your enemy and know yourself, find naught in fear for 100 battles. Know yourself but not your enemy, find level of loss and victory. Know thy enemy but not yourself, wallow in defeat every time.

"News from a personal war".
Powerful documentary about the drug wars in Rio de Janeiro and how it affected the citizens before the whole pacification process started.

I actually enjoyed this one called "Born Rich," which interviews and follows the lives of young heirs from prominent American families. I think that European dude was the only one who kept it 100. Also, Mayor Bloomberg's daughter was pretty cool.

BBC did one on Hannibal's invasion of Rome that I really enjoy. I actually visited the ruins of Carthage when I was in Tunisia last year. To this day, military academies around the world study Hannibal's tactics as he is considered one of the greatest military strategists to have ever lived. The Romans never imagined he would lead a calvary of men (and elephants) from Africa across Spain, over the Alps, and into Rome to engage in war. Amazing.

'The Men Who Jump of Buildings' is a very good one. Not about history or anything like that but the main protagonist has a few key lines in it which ring true 'everybody dies but not everyone lives'

Those outside of the UK will have to find the torrent.

My favorite documentaries are the ones about the great military commanders. They personify manhood. Here's a few I've watched recently.

Genghis Khan: Established the largest contiguous empire in human history.

Attila the Hun: Terrified the Eastern and Western Roman Empires through a series of utterly cruel and barbaric invasions. Responsible for the downfall of ancient Rome and the rise of the Church.

Saladin: Legendary Muslim Crusader who won the respect of his Western enemies through his chivalrous behavior in war
