Figuring out new direction in life, business, any advice?
New guy here, mid twenties, married, no kids yet. I don't like liberals and I don't like the east, where I'm stuck at. I'm currently in the military (US) awaiting medical separation for some back & spinal injuries as well as depression and narcolepsy. It's a done deal, just trying to figure out what to do afterwards so I'm not screwed when the time comes. Had a background in engineering / mathematics / computers before this commission. Planning on going out west when all is said and done, the climate is much better for my health. Does anyone here live or work in a major city out west? I.E. Denver / Phoenix / Las Vegas / Salt Lake City?

Looking into entrepreneurial or sales jobs, even tried following Kyle Trouble's advice from ROK for starting my own web site but haven't had the time or concentration to put into that yet. Overall just want to hear what you guys have to say. I'm willing to work as hard as I can to become successful, but I'm striving to figure out a way to make income on my own without having to go work for some rat-race HR-cunt-infested company. Do a lot of you guys do your own thing?

By the way for any of you business guys, what do you think of that guy Patrick Bet-David from Valuetainment on Youtube? Supposed CEO and multimillionaire of a life insurance business, he gives great advice in his videos but can sound a little preachy sometimes.

Are they giving you a lump sum? Or perm disabled?

What are your tuition assistance options?

Aloha!

Not sure yet, the conditions I have will be with me for life, not sure what will happen as far as pay yet, the process is lengthy and takes half a year at least. I was told that I would be compensated by the VA but I'm not looking to live on a handout. I still have ambitions beyond my current state of affairs. I already went to school and I don't see a point in going back for a masters. Don't have the money for it, would rather just start learning how to make money in the real world and go from there.

I don't have any business advice, but I'm currently trying to get into the Merchant Marine. They seem to love hiring former military (especially Navy/Coast Guard). You generally work half the year and have the other half to do whatever you want. Food and a room are also free on a ship, so you can save/invest a ton of money. You'd also have plenty of time to think about entrepreneurial/website ideas.

The lifestyle is very appealing because of the travel opportunities, and not having to deal with the 8-5 office nonsense. The money is also good, especially as you move up the ranks. There are lots of sailors making well into the six figures.

If you don't like liberals, you can forget about the first three cities you listed. For proof, just look at the last few elections' electoral maps (as well as who those districts send to state legislators).

Don't think I can go back in to the service with my injury, or even government service with my health issues. Who knows, maybe' they'll dissipate eventually when I'm done with this toxic PC environment.

I wouldn't mind going on a half-annual sojourn at sea, however, I plan on having kids soon and want to stay near the home to raise them so I'm going to find options where I can stay on the mainland or travel only for short periods.

I figured most big cities are full of libtards, but Vegas I heard is good for business. Reno even has a booming scene for engineers / startups.

Anyone live there and can give aspects of financial / cost of living in Vegas?

Housing prices are going way up in Las Vegas so that will make things more expensive but generally other things there are pretty reasonable. But Las Vegas generally isn't a good place to raise a family.

Have you visited Denver / Phoenix / Las Vegas / Salt Lake City? It would be worth it to spend a week or so in each city and get a feel. Get your list down to two cities and spend a little more time in each one. From there you will probably have a good idea where you want to be.

I'm in the Phoenix area and I love it here. Real estate is also going up here pretty fast too but generally the cost of living is pretty low here. Arizona often has among the cheapest gas prices in the US and grocery stores have great prices. Phoenix is also one of the most pro-veteran places I've ever been to in the US.

I would read a book by James Altucher called Choose Yourself. This guy is an entrepreneur who hit rock bottom a couple of times and came up with something called his "daily practice" to get up off the floor. He also shares ways to reframe your thinking to eliminate self-limiting beliefs and gives lots of concrete examples. Its a great starting point for someone interested in entrepreneurism.

This.

Also in the Phoenix area when I'm not in Canada. If you commissioned I imagine you have a degree that suits your background in engineering / mathematics / computers? I just finished school here so I sorta have a feel for where things are going, and its nearly all high-tech or financial from what I've seen through school. So your background is well suited for the jobs popping up around here like data analytics, computer science, engineering, etc. Also Wells Fargo has a heavy presence here and I've seen them post jobs that are exclusively for veterans.

Really? Wells Fargo, I guess I could stomach working for a bank if the pay is better than the dismal earnings that we get while we're in.
I was more interested in Nevada for the lack of an income tax, as well as looking to eventually set up multiple businesses with the proceeds going in a little circuit.

It's probably going to be between Vegas and Arizona, whichever place I can find a niche to make more first, but I don't plan on raising kids all the way in Vegas, probably just the first few years.

What's the crowd like in Phoenix? Are there good neighborhoods where you don't have to worry about some illegal scoping out your house? I haven't been there in about eight years so it's hard for me to compare.

My opinion is that you are worrying about the wrong things. Don't worry about taxes until you have profits. Everywhere has crime, Phoenix, and other places. Read Altucher's book and do his "daily practice" (its in the book - very easy) and hopefully you will reframe your mind away from self-limiting or non-productive ideas. You needed to take a few steps down the road before you invest so much mental energy on these sorts of problems. Altucher's book will help you get from zero to a decent way down that road. And its very cheap - he initially sold it for 0.99, so there are lots of used copies available.
