Accomplish any goal with OTR's NIPS system
Accomplish any goal with OTR's NIPS system:

I came up with this system which is a combination of available ideas, plus some of my own honed by experience and necisity. I specifically did it for commission sales/ self employment and or small business ownership, all of which I have done. It may be applicable to other areas as well.

NIPS is not an agenda, it is the driver for your agenda. Nor is it a list of goals, it is the steps to get to your goals. You dont change your current email tasks or callendar, rather you change your thinking about what entires to make using this system. When I came up with the name it meant NEXT INCOME PRODUCING STEP. At this point the name doesnt matter. I suppose you could even use it in game to track your pipeline please let me know if you do that would be interesting.

*NIPS is done on one sheet of paper must be at least printed out or hand written*

Do not try to do this on a computer screen or phone only it won't work as well. I am not a real estate agent but I will create the example as if I were for demonstration purposes.

ITS ONE PAGE. You constantly replace the old page. Preferably daily.

So for this made up example I am a real estate agent, and the goals are to pay off $20,000 in credit cards, save $50,000 to buy my first property to fix up and rent out, and have $10,000 extra for a trip to Sweden to game. While I am working toward these goals my normal life costs $4000 a month.

1. Look for every lead talked to in the last year and print out the last email or note the call. Note what they want where they are in the process.

2. Determine (this is very important) if they are serious and can be closed soon. A guy named JOe who you showed a house last week and wanted a few days to think over an offer is now and goes on the list. A young kid named Lew who came to an open house to see a cool house but isn't making any offers till he finishes his MBA doesn't darken the door of the NIPS list. NIPS has nothing to do with long term prospects. Keeping in touch with people that might make you money in a year is important but not part of NIPS, UNTIL there is a defined set of steps to get them to close.

3. Make the NIPS like this and fill in the details. It's one line for each opportunity.

NAME - NOTES - NEXT STEP(S) - ESTIMATED DATE TO CLOSE - EXPECTED EARNINGS

JOE wants a $500,000 house / liked 123 main st. FIll out the offer contract, call him for a coffee, ask him to sign the offer. July 15, $15,000
Sell my Corvette which I never drive / wash it, take the photos, make the ebay ad. June 10 or sooner, $20,000
Jane needs an apartment by the end of the month. Call her to see 125 main st which is $100 more than her budget. Schedule, get offer. $750
Luke asked me to list 127 main st. Get listing signed, Photos, get Louisa in the my office to enter mls, set up ads, set up open house. August 15 $12000

Total $47500 by August.

Before you say "I already knew that." You didn't. Try before dissing it.

Here are some possible reactions the NIPS system can reveal ONCE YOU SEE IT WRITTEN DOWN ON ONE PAGE:

I am a loser, I have nothing to enter. But I can change this. Blush

I hate my life but I want to do something about it. Huh

To cover for my lack of possibilities in life I write long posts on RVF. Exclamation

Fuck OTR and his NIPS system. tard

Dang, I am $10,000 short if I do everything here. Better get going. Heart

Holy fuck, there is $300,000 on this list, I want it done by the end of the year. Confused

I have no goals. I suck. Cat lady

My goals aren't big enough. I can do better. Whip

Fuck this job. I'm quitting and starting my own gig. If I fail I'll start again. Idea

I really need to stop bullshitting with people who never close. Fuck them. The 80/20 axe is swinging. Dodgy

I came up with this by "accident." I did it three times until I realized what I was doing. Once I needed an astronomical amount of money for bills and wrote out a way to make it happen. It worked. One other time I had so much business on the table I was SHOCKED at the total possibility. I ended up earning every penny on my list. Another time I was so deeply fucked beyond belief I used this system to map out the steps out of hell. I literally turned a fucking nightmare into massive profits.

One of the secrets is what you do once you see the list. Are you going to get MORE into your pipeline? Do you have enough? Are you going to adjust something that doesn't work? QUANTIFY what's on your plate and the path will become clear. Repeat what works.

Once you make the list you can also then reflect BACK on your goals. It should be revealing if you are bullshitting yourself on your goals. Maybe you don't have any. Maybe you have no way of getting to them. Again, NIPS isn't your goals, its your steps to goals.

One more important thing. The NIPS system does something to your priorities. Once you see in writing you could make $15,000 on line 1 quickly and you have been dicking around with line 3 which is worth $750 you can APPLY YOUR TIME ACCORDINGLY.

But OTR what if my goal is to fuck more 9s and be in great shape. Then enter the cost of wardrobe, dates, gym, and the cost of experiences that make you more interesting into goals. All goals can have at least SOME financial element. Know the cost and compare to your NIPS.

Let me know how you go.

Thanks for sharing!

How would you track more open, broader goals?

I have trouble breaking BIG IDEA goals into tangible checkboxes I can knock out.

"Fuck more 9's" is a great example

NAME - NOTES - NEXT STEP(S) - ESTIMATED DATE TO CLOSE - EXPECTED EARNINGS

Fuck 9's - need to find good places to meet them - find bars to go to, take them on dates, fuck them - 1 year - $3k

Maybe this can be a developing list of places, beaches, exclusive clubs, resorts, experiences, etc, that you can try. Along this path you may meet more, although this is indirect.

What if you currently approach 10% of the hot girls you see. But you make a new rule that you will approach 90% of all 9s you see.

OR forget the goal of 9s, and make a goal that improves your life and gets you around quality. Like I will be a member of the $200 a month gym instead of the $39 one. Then you can quantify the membership. Another way is make a goal of a certain lifestyle.

Excellent advice. Just curious though, what are the results that you have gotten from this "NIPS" system for yourself Off The Reservation?

RE: Accomplish any goal with OTR's NIPS system
Try it. It's the act of writing it down and the subsequent math and reordering of priorities which will help you get results.

I continue to use it mostly for business to know what I have on the table and try to fast forward the result. I have seen a reduction in wasted time among other results.

I can co-sign this, having done the same in the past. I worked towards that goal because I had to or I'd have gone broke. I really like what you've done here, especially the emphasis on profit.

I'm taking this to try and will report back. Thanks, OTR.

RE: Accomplish any goal with OTR's NIPS system
I know this exercise works because I do something extremely similar.

Everyone laughs at the idea of writing out your vision/desires/goals.

But, there's something really fucking powerful about the act of WRITING your shit down, visualizing the outcome you want, and then taking action.

I started doing this daily after reading Scott Adams' book.

Your NIPS exercise actually takes it a step further, because you're essentially breaking down a vision into smaller, more attainable steps.

Yes. And only the few that will read this and try it will understand.

Another way I am using this now is leave the calendar for next month blank until the NIPS exercise is done in advance. The structure for the calendar for next month is NIPS driven not just the normal random entries.

I thought this thread was going to be about getting to second base.

RE: Accomplish any goal with OTR's NIPS system
TNIPS has changed my life. It makes so much sense after reading yet it never occurred to me to allocate time based on expected earnings. It has profoundly improved my ability to work to get paid, and is instrumental in pushing my business along.

One thing I do, is if I have a task that is essential but won't really earn me money, is to assign a value to it, that value being the amount of money I'd pay for someone to do it for me, assuming money was not an issue. Small little tasks that I'd pay someone 5 bucks to do for me will obviously slide to the bottom of the priority list; tasks that are complex and I'd have to pay a lot to get someone to do it, will obviously rise. Completing 'expensive' tasks first is more fruitful than first fiddling around with low-priority tasks - I never realised how much energy low priority junk can siphon off until I started allocating monetary values to them and realising that they were just blocking me from getting the most important work done; if I did the 'cheap' tasks first, I wasn't fresh enough to really tackle the mission critical things.

Along with NIPS, A book I recently read that has also helped me on time management is Brian Tracy's Time Management, I found a free PDF version here:
http://www.amanet.org/time_mgmnt_mini.pdf

I read somewhere that if you can't manage yourself, you will never manage a business, and that reading time management books is a far better use to a new business owner/entrepreneur than reading 'business' books. NIPS, along with reading some time management books, has helped me immensely.

RE: Accomplish any goal with OTR's NIPS system
So if I were to apply this to additional job-related training, how exactly do I calculate value?

Say for instance at your entry level job you make 20$/hr but with something else added to your skillset/CV/resume you can ask for 30$/hr after one year.

So on the NIPS sheet you write "training for your new skillset" to pay you 30$/hr in flanders fun bucks, times say 200 hours to get reasonably good at the skill ==> would it be worth 6k to learn the skill due to the time involved or worth 20k due to the expected increase in salary?

Is it directly related to the additional pay, such as company policy to pay more to those certified, or an estimated possible raise?

Estimated based on what other people who move past entry-level to somewhat mid-level get.

So its not guaranteed? Is there another way to get to mid level, or do some at mid-level not have this qualification?

Thank you, Off The Reservation! Looks promising.

I think I grasp the fundamentals and I'm eager to explore NIPS further. But I would like to see more examples on everyday usage! Personally, now focusing on creating a Side-Business, fitness and day job.

Is someone (you Off The Reservation?) willing to share examples on a concrete paper?
