Syria ties Iran 2-2. S. Korea, Oz, Iran and Japan are through. Syria goes to a home and away playoff vs Jihadi Arabia in October, winner gets CONMEBOL's fifth place -Chile, Peru Uruguay or freekin ARGENTINA! - Tall order for the Qasioun Eagles...

Interesting finish in Africa, Nigeria is in, Tunisia probably as well, but the other groups have the Cranes of Uganda and the Stallions of Burkina Faso (fka Upper Volta) currently in the lead over Egypt and Senegal/S. Africa respectively. Still a lot of games to be played in the CAF quals though. Final spot will be between Ivory Coast and Morocco.

Actually, provided Syria beats Jihadi Barbaria in play offs (fingers crossed Japan won't choke in the next hour), then they'll play CONCACAF's 4th team in play-offs...which could well be the U S of A. Banana

Poor New Zealand has to play CONMEBOL's 5th team, against whomever they have absolutely zero chance anyways.

Fuck, an intercontinental USA-Syria play off in November would be so epic.

I stand corrected, tovarich...

Back to the drawing board for Ireland after two straight bad results, they will be fighting with Wales for that playoff spot behind Serbia.

Iceland back on top of group I along with Croatia with a statement win, 2-0 over Ukraine, confirming that 2016 wasn't a fluke.

Bummer Para, they got through on GD of two goals, no wonder you were so pissed at your 2-1 vs Thailand. I think Oz should go through, with Syria and (probably) Honduras in the way.

RE: FIFA World Cup 2018 thread
CONMEBOL qualifiers is insane. It's as Brazil aside, no other teams wants to qualify.

Argentina couldn't beat Venezuela at home. Chile have been dog-shit for months, same for Ecuador.

The last 2 match days next month will be a bloodbath. Would love it if Peru makes it. They've got Argentina away, and Colombia at home. The great thing about South American qualifiers is that any team can beat the other on their day. Very unpredictable !

On the Australia-Syria playoff, first of all, very disappointed in Japan, but as much as I despise those 8-0ers (Saudi), on merit and play they deserved qualification. Syria has played their home matches in Malaysia so far, but they'd be stupid to play their play-off there. I think they should ask to have them game in either Beirut or Tehran to maximize their home advantage. Australia is pretty formidable at home, but very often struggle when they travel to the mid-east.

RE: FIFA World Cup 2018 thread
South American qualifiers managed to get even closer and more intense, going into the final rounds....Those 2 late goals Paraguay scored in Colombia brought them back to life.

- Brazil & Uruguay are through

- 3 of Chile/Colombia/Peru/Argentina/Paraguay will join them.

Final round on Tuesday:

Brazil-Chile (Brazil have a fantastic home record and usually thump Chile at home, but prospect of eliminating Argentina through giving the game to Chileans must be enticing)

Ecuador-Argentina (Ecuador already out, having led the qualifiers at first, on a losing streak. But playing in high altitude Quito is always tough, and Ecuador beat the Argies in Buenos Aires. Won't be a walkover for Argentina. Lose and they are out, win and they are through, draw and they need a miracle)

Peru-Colombia (Colombia really messed up last night. Peru needs a win to qualify directly for first time in ages, I don't think a draw will be enough for them, unless Paraguay fails at home to Venezuela. Colombia must avoid defeat at all costs.)

Paraguay-Venezuela (Looks very easy on paper, but South American qualifiers never makes sense. Win at home, and Paraguay would almost be guaranteed a play-off spot at least, you'd say.)

All matches to be played 7:30PM ET on Tuesday.

-----------------------------------------

Turkey vs. Iceland is match of the day in Europe.
The atmosphere will be lively and Turks must win to keep their play-off chances. Iceland wins this match and I top them to win the group and qualify directly.

Argentina will qualify for sure. Ecuador have no chance and FiFA will do everything to help Argentina because eliminating Argentina doesn't bring any positiveness to World Cup.

World Cup without Messi is not good for anyone. Tickets, Russia, tv channels, Fifa, everyone will lose money. Therefore, they'll do everything to help Argentina win the game. Ecuador don't have any chance anyway, so they won't cry much.

Normally i would agree, but the team have such abysmal skill right now that i think not even all FIFA tricks will save Argentina this time.

Very exciting final matchday ahead in UEFA Gp. 1: Sweden at Holland. Holland will most likely need a win to advance*. I'm def watching this, Tuesday at 5pm EST.

Wales Ireland is another final showdown with a ticket to Russia at play, Monday. Eire being one point behind will probably need to win in Cardiff, unless they beat Moldova in Dublin today while Wales doesn't win at Georgia (game currently tied at halftime).

The mighty northern minnows of Iceland have once again had a fabulous run, a tie at Turkey tomorrow should be enough for them, although they are still in contention to win the group from Croatia, which hosts Finland tomorrow and travels to Ukraine Tuesday.

Portugal-Switzerland is another good game, both are qualified but Portugal can secure first place and skip the dangerous playoffs by beating the Swiss*.

In Asia, kudos to the Syrians, who had to play the series vs Oz in Malaysia, which I would guess is not much of a home advantage. I guess they couldn't do it in say Jordan or Dubai because those countries are anti-Assad, sad. I wonder why they didn't hold it in Iran instead. Second leg Tuesday down under, pressure is on!

*provided all these teams don't choke by not taking 3 points out of their gimme games tomorrow

Doesn't matter about the skill. I mean, there are always some weird teams in World Cup who don't have any skills. Nobody would prefer to have World Cup without Messi.

Especially when Ecuador have no chance now. They will give the game to Argentina in gold platter.

US - Panama tonight, loser will probably end up having to face Oz (or Syria) in the intercontinental barrage. Another big game today.

Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are by far the most overrated superstars in soccer history. They can't even win world cups for their countries.

Maradona had one and Pele had a few. Messi almost won it but he's no where close to the skill of Maradona.

CR and Messi will never be great until they win the big one.

CR 7 Won the Euros with a subpar Portugal team... He's an all time legend for me.

Messi on the other hand has stars around him and continually chokes.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!

2 0 away victory over Capo Verde from Senegal, now 2 points clear of Capo Verde, Burkina Faso, and 3 from South Africa, with 2 games to play against South Africa (including one to be replayed because of a corrupted referee who gave an inexistent penalty to them, and got banned for life). Just one win needed against South Africa and we will be back since 2002!!!

Hoping to get France again, and beat them again in Russia Smile
