Why is everyone fixated on his lawn, seriously? The guy is living really high off the hog. Why would someone need 110,000 sq ft for a house. Does he use that place for communal living quarters? I mean you have people in cities that can barely afford their monthly rent.

Because ridiculously audacious mansions = tons and tons of high quality pussy. At least I assume it works that way.

With a house that size you can have your own "court" of people pleasers.

Or just have your entire family in the same house. That would make for an interesting experience.

The Palace at Versailles is around 700,000 square feet.

Came here to make that reference.

The king had forcibly moved his entire court in there and had it set up so that their whereabouts were constantly monitored in order to prevent plotting and rebellion.

That's almost the only reason this would make sense.

In the past the design of large houses was lousy and that is why you needed a staff of 20-50. Though my bet is that he employed more than 20 people especially in the gardens, cleaning crew, butler, maids. It's actually not a bad job nowadays - pretty well paid in some houses. Butler makes 100.000$+ and other workers also make decent coin especially if the owners want them to keep their mouth shut about anything they see inside - the selection process is far better than an illegal maid from Ecuador.

In the handful of billionaire homes I've been (and cooked) in, there's almost always a "show" kitchen. A place for people to gather. Myself I've never understood why at house parties people almost always gather around in the kitchen, must be something instinctive there...anyway the show kitchen is immaculate with state-of-the-art everything...and it never gets used. Adjacent to the show kitchen is a real kitchen where the private chefs work which resembles a much more sleek and polished restaurant kitchen; lots of stainless steel, commercial hood ventilation system, walk-in coolers, commercial dishwashers, etc.

Yes butlers and private chef salaries go well into 6 figures, but it takes a special type of individual. You really have to be okay with being somebody's bitch and the job security can be nil. Without much rhyme or reason, some households are extremely loyal to their staff and will keep them around for a lifetime, and in other cases a chef can get fired after 3 years of loyal service for just one batch of slightly overcooked cookies.

Probably the old instinct of gathering around the campfire.

Extreme money can exacerbate character traits. I know some very rich people who are quite fond of the people working for them. Then there are others who treat them like serfs.

An asshole will be a bigger asshole with a billion dollars, but a very kind man may be still a kind man.

Also as a side note - rich people from different nationalities, countries, religions treat their staff differently. In some countries there is greater appreciation for people who are working in their homes (some German, Austrian, Norwegian, Finnish billionaires) - other places treat them close to human garbage (Middle East employers) - while other countries are somewhere in the middle. I would classify American rich as somewhere in the middle - probably based on the fact of the wide gap between the classes and the higher gini-coefficient.

A mans lawn is a window into his soul. A lawn is something you cultivate and care for.

A man who disrespects a good lawn probably has little self respect. He doesn't cultivate and care for anything.

Would you rather this guy sod it up into 4x4 sections and mail it to those in Somali starving for a good lawn?

It’s also pretty controversial. The business mogul, who Forbes says is worth $US5.9 billion, was recently in court defending the funding of his Sagaponack estate. Representatives of a now-defunct mining business he used to own claimed he looted the company to build it, and in late February he was ordered to pay back at least $US118 million in damages.

But the mansion, constructed for about $US110 million but now valued much higher, has been the center of a number of controversies since Rennert built it in the 1990s.

Anyone who builds a place thats just a private residence that size is frankly an idiot.

In olden times, a stately home/castle/whatever had many functional uses, IF it was properly used. It could be a commercial premise. It could hold Assizes (legal court functions). It entertained and accomodated visitors on diplomatic and trade missions. It could be the centre of a place's cultural life -concerts and banquets and art gallery etc. It could also be the centre of the area's agricultural and craft production. With the artisans etc given accomodation in the complex too.

Ofcourse a country house could also be owned by a vacuous, overmaterilistic idiot. But remember, these buildings could also be the equivalent of Wall St or Silicon Valley offices for their era.

This junk bond guy just has a personality disorder, IMO.

The guy might be an idiot, but he's worth between 4 to 6 BILLION. So he probably doesn't care and gives zero fucks.

Even then, his property has appreciated from it's initial 100M cost. So in all, he's a smart idiot.

Edit: Here's some lawn porn for Kona.

A place that big in my hands would probably end up being used as an elaborate paintball field.

Although if I had that much money I might also consider turning it into a house of horrors and invite random groups of strangers to stay there for a long weekend.

Lets say you have a x number of houses around the world that are 6000-10000 sq ft each, rather than just this 1.

Which would have a lower cost of upkeep?

I guess in terms of management and headache having 1 house would be better than keep track of x number of houses around the world, but what about cost?

Honestly, I think the dude's house is too small. He should've spent more money.

I mean, you're basically a peasant if your dual tennis courts are outside rather than inside.

And I sure as hell hope that the outdoor pool isn't the only one on the property.

Just low class to have to walk a mile just to go swimming.

Obviously this guy is married. It would be cheaper to build this house just to avoid his wife than get a divorce. She'll never see your mistresses. Now that is how you make a marriage work gents.

I was thinking the same damn thing. But then I realized that's probably the pool for parties and such, while there are likely at least 2 other ones on property.

Hell there's probably an indoor pool for the guest house.

I imagine people get around on the property in something like this:

What's the working hours for private chef's? I don't think he can stay from breakfast to dinner? What do they do when they are not cooking something? cleaning the kitchen? do they live onsite?

That guy's net wealth is less impacted by it than 99% of householders out there.

Also he very likely used it as a major starting point to invite hundreds for the parties:

The house does not have that many sleeping rooms frankly, a lot of them are huge halls where you can comfortably even invite 1000+. They can spread out across the garden as well.

But frankly many billionaires have houses like that. Bill Gates' house has almost 70.000 square feet (including guest houses which have 2000 square feet).

Billionaires spending cash on massive houses and the corresponding workers who need to maintain it all - that is actually a net positive.

You have to realize that what hurts the economy more is if a billionaire lives like a millionaire and hires an illegal maid while pumping billions into the bond market and not circulating the money.

In fact ALL BILLIONAIRES SHOULD HAVE 100 mio. $ houses and hire 20-100 people as crew. And even that would be too little. They should also all buy massive yachts (also well-paid jobs) and private planes and travel around a lot.

This knee-jerk reaction of some who say that this is crazy or "not right" simply does not take into account that a penny-pinching billionaire is the worst for the world economy, since the money flows upwards to the 0,001% and then that guy does not spend jack shit.

Never mind that such a room includes dining room, poker room, pool room, ballroom for some larger events, fitness center, bowling room / shooting alley in the undergrounds, indoor pool room, SPA, children's room, sex-room/sex dungeon, video-game room, cinema room, cinema room for kids, art gallery rooms, studios if they do artistic endeavors, library, office spaces, 2 main reception rooms, 2-4 living room areas of different sizes, 10-20 en-suite sleeping rooms/suites, scores and scores of utility rooms. If you put in that many rooms with specialized functions into the house, then 50.000 sqft isn't that big. Many familie can fill up such a house if they invite their extended family alone.

The world needs more 100 mio. $ and even 200-300 mio. $ mansions.

That's too much house to fulfill the essential premise of a home: a place where you can be completely at ease and comfortable in your own element. You cross that threshold once you require hired help just to keep the place running. Who wants to come home just to have to endure the presence of paid strangers all over the place?

This is as much house as I'd ever want:

Seaside property on the Washington coast with its own beach and shed/shop. You can set up a mooring and park your boat right next to the house for when you feel like exploring the islands of the PNW during your leisure time. Mortgage on a place like this is around $6k a month, which is quite doable for anyone with an upper-middle class income. Even questions of money aside, I'd much rather live in the house above than the monstrosity in the OP.

That is pretty sweet. I'm more from the camp that would like something Spanish-style with a walled courtyard in the southwest with a 20-something illegal housekeeper/cook who likes to sunbath topless in her off-hours and a couple of horses, but having a summer place in the Pacific Northwest to break up the days would be ideal.
