RE: Proud of me
Back from the fires. Worked 16 hour days. Very tired. During this ordeal I was reminded and it was reinforced greatly in my mind that you can not count on the government to save you. I could not believe how many people would not do anything to protect their homes other than pack stuff in the car.

No cutting down the very dry grass, no moving of shit that is going to catch fire easy from near their houses, no putting a sprinkler on the roof to prevent the thing from catching. Some people had a weeks notice the fire was coming yet they needed to get gas for their vehicles while the actual evacuation was going on...

I have to say I'm glad for sites like this. It has made clear to me you are either a person who is a survivor or a victim.

Are there any guidelines or a list of things to do if a fire is on the way? Of course, if the fire is right here then I'd have to run, but if I have a couple of hours or days notice, I'd like to know what I can do to reduce damage to my property.

That's no big deal. Look how busy we've been honouring your thread while you were away.

I think we had it harder. Brilliant puns don't post themselves.

I'd say the best thing you can do to save your house is have a metal roof. The places that are usually left have them as it stops the wind blown tinder from catching your house on fire.

If you have a rototiller use it around your house to turn up the dirt so you don't have anything to catch on fire grass wise. If not cut all the grass as low as you can. Get rid of anything bush wise that is near your house - if you are married your wife will hate you but better than loosing your place. Put a sprinkler (or 2 ) on the roof and when you leave turn it on.

If you have a wood type exterior house or building you want to try and save soak it as much as you can with water so the water is right through the wood. Move anything of value out of the buildings and put it in a field if you have one and soak the land if you can. Farmers moved all their stuff in the middle of their fields and had the water going on full and all their stuff made it while the fire went around.
