RE: Which VPNs have you used?
I'm using NordVPN right now, I signed up for it when it was on sale. I think I paid $3 a month for 24 months, something like that.

Seems decent so far, It seems to slow the internet speed down 15% or so though.

The interface is easy to use and I have used it on my Macbook and iPhone, my Dad is also using it on his iPad.

I use StrongVPN. Cost is about $55 USD / year but the ability to use it on my phone as well more than justifies the cost. I'd recommend it.

Used to use Private Internet Access until I updated my OS X and then it no longer worked and there support wouldn't do jack shit. So I went with IP Vanish instead.

PureVPN. They had a special of 5 years for $69 with 5 logins; which is ~$1.17/month.

RE: Which VPNs have you used?
I've tried at least 5 different ones. ExpressVpn is the most feature rich, fastest, and best bang for my value of them all. It helps me tremendously in Asia and I travel with a router already set up with various cities I need and all I have to do is plug it in and my kids and wife can get online and get Youtube Kids or whatever other things we need with no problems at all.

Most things are super easy to set up too. Only doing the router can be a little tricky, but that goes for all of these services if you want to do that.

This may give many people a warm feeling inside, but it would be utopian to assume everything is fine and dandy. This may expose a person to more scrutiny because of lack of email. Security isn't a binary thing, there's a risk continuum--and there's always some risk that the service in question is collaborating with some intelligence agency or has some spook that has physically infiltrated the company. So called "neutral" "data havens", are not always so. Honestly the US doesn't have to exert that much pressure at all to get a place like Sweden, Switzerland or Iceland to turn over info on the account in question. Records of everything are retained these days. They know your MAC address, your IP address, they know it all. How do you know they don't keep logs? You don't. Who's to trust them anyway? Most companies bend to US demands when the full weight of the federal government comes down on them: at&t, verizon, google, facebook, twitter, etc. They caught a recent government leaker because her printer she used, printed out dots invisible to the human eye, that identified the printer in question. https://boingboing.net/2017/06/06/realit...by-in.html

I just use an OpenVPN client with a random one on VPNGate.net for free. Used to use Hotspot Shield but there's a data cap for the free service. No point in paying especially if you give them your name or your payment details.

PureVPN reports your data if it is asked for. Which is why I don't recommend them. I suggest when you do buy a VPN, 100% look into there privacy policy and how they act with governments/keep your records or are they deleted instantly/etc.. But then again, it all depends on your use for a VPN. I also recommend getting a different setup if what I have said above for a OS system. Maybe some older form of linux bootable from a USB but like I said, it all depends on why you need/want one.

Can you suggest the best VPN for privacy? Or is it better to create personal with a cheap Virtual private server?

I'm looking to purchase a new VPN subscription but the vast majority of advice online is biased and just looking to get a commission so it would be good to compile some non-biased experiences of various providers.

Also, Black Friday is coming up and we should be able to get some good deals then!

I'll start. My current VPN is IPVanish, which I purchased on the (biased) recommendation of blogger Matthew Woodward. I would not really recommend it. It slows my internet speeds down to the extent that I'd rather not use it unless I really have to. Also, it won't work for unblocking most things that are blocked by region.

Hey I started using black Friday. It is faster than the older versions.

I use Express VNP.

Very satisfied, good customer service.

Good enough to watch BBC over the internet, if it stops working a customer service bod will fix it right away.

I've had good experiences with Turbo VPN if you want to use one for free, I am probably going to get me a paid one as soon as I will go back to China though.

As has been mentioned earlier I recommend Mullvad. Pay with bitcoin, they do not keep logs. Based in Sweden with strong privacy laws.

I've used ExpressVPN for a long time. Supposedly, NordVPN's security practices are a little tighter, but I had performance and technical issues with it.

Since I'm less concerned about foiling intelligence agencies and more concerned about foiling attorneys, I'm confident ExpressVPN is "good enough".

RE: Which VPNs have you used?
Guys, my ads (rental ads) on Craigslist are getting ghosted and one of the reasons, according to what I've read online, is Craigslist prefers local ads to come from local IP's. I'm in SEA and I'm posting in Austin, TX.

Does anyone know a VPN I can pay for that would make it seem like I'm posting from Austin, TX?

I'm in a pickle, I don't want to go back home just for this. Now I could hire someone in Austin to post for me...and I will if I have to, but I'm trying not to do that.

At this point I'm thinking I need to clear my cookies/history, close all my applications, create two new email addresses, two new email accounts, two new Craigslist accounts (I usually have two, for organizational purposes), and post from a new internet connection (like at a coworking space). It'll still be the same phone numbers, though, attached to the two accounts, and I may run into problems there.

EDIT: I found a VPN that uses Austin, buying it, and I'll just try posting with my other Craigslist account, via the VPN, and see if that ad is ghosted or not. That'll be the first thing I try before anything else.

Highly recommend Mullvad.net. They don't handle data over easily. Read the privacy policy to understand when they can handle information about you (your IP).

Pay using bitcoins.

RE: Which VPNs have you used?
So in case it ever helps anyone, I ended up going with this one, they have an Austin access point:

https://www.personalvpn.com/

And it didn't get my Craigslist account working, but when I made a new Craigslist account via the VPN, everything works fine, so I'm halfway to a resolution.

I had never used a VPN before, and it was pretty much self-explanatory. Also there's too many VPN threads, there should be a master VPN thread, as this stuff becomes more and more important.

What does ghosting look like?

I stopped using Craigslist because every single ad I places would get flagged and I couldn't figure out why. It says "This posting has been flagged for removal."

It might be because I'm posting from all around the world, but my account has been around many years so it's strange that would happen.

The ads are the same rental ads I've been using for ages.

RE: Which VPNs have you used?
I have been using ExpressVPN for a few months, with mixed results. I live outside the US, so use it primarly to get a US server location.

Some points:

In order to use my Amazon prime, I need to use a specific server located in New Jersey. If using the smart location server, Amazon prime will pop up a "not available in your location".

The VPN makes the Internet slower.

Some programs I use on my computer will disconnect with the VPN on.

Some websites can't be reached with the VPN on.

So, it works, but I would be interested if there is a better perfoming VPN.

It might be because I'm posting from all around the world, but my account has been around many years so it's strange that would happen.

The ads are the same rental ads I've been using for ages.

So, when you get flagged, you'll see the entry in your account in red, so you know it got taken down. With ghosting, your entry looks fine in your account, but if you actually go searching for it, it won't appear in search results. So they're making you think everything is fine, but you won't get any replies and you'll think there's just no interest for whatever reason, but actually, it's because they're lying to you about your post. They're showing you that everything's fine when you are logged into your account, but anyone that actually searches for your post will not see it.

It's really bad because at this point Craigslist is almost a monopoly in certain respects and if you're banned, it can seriously affect your livelihood and as far as I know you're basically SOL unless the gods intervene.

So that's exactly what happened to me, everything I would post would get flagged. I think I posted too many times a day from the same IP address. I've done it before with no problems, but then people were getting upset over something I included in the ads that's behavior-related and were flagging them, and after enough of that, the algorithm piled on.

So I tried using both accounts via the VPN and one posting was ghosted, then removed/flagged, and the other actually showed up for a moment, and then it was removed/flagged, the VPN didn't help.

However, when I tried using an entirely new account (an old account I'd forgotten about), but with the same phone number from one of the two affected accounts, and via the VPN, everything is fine so far. So it looks like Craigslist was just angry at the two accounts, but not at the phone numbers associated with the accounts. But I'll be more careful now, I'll use the VPN, I'll post less, and I won't include the behavior-related restriction that contributed to people flagging the posts which then led to the algorithm ghosting my posts.

Hope that explains it, man. It's been a rough day, and I'm still not back up completely.

What are you using instead of Craigslist to advertise, edlefou? I'd love to have an alternative.

There's a site called kijiji, which is owned by ebay, that I've been using for several years now. They push you for paid upgrades, but the free ads work just fine.

Looking back, I have very few hits from my Craigslist ads, although that could be because they ghosted and/or flagged my ads.

I use TURBO. It has issues such as only being for Android and it runs slow at times. However, it is free and it works although my Hotmail account got all fucked up because it routed me through the UK and Microsoft deemed that as "suspicious activity"
