As far as vodkas go, the rule of thumb is "the farther north, the better." Vietnamese vodka is shit. I tasted smoother gasoline.
My preference in vodkas is Scandinavian. Reyka was already mentioned, it is outstanding. I will always have a soft spot for Finlandia, especially cranberry. Plain is perfect as base for pertsovka.

One of the best Russian vodkas I ever had was the Jewel of Russia. It is very hard to find, but if you ever see it, get it.

The Truth About Tito's and All Vodka

Quote:Vodka drinkers, of course, are accustomed to fantasy. Vodka is, by definition; colorless, odorless and tasteless. Virtually all of the vodka made in the U.S., including Tito's and Smirnoff, starts as grain neutral spirit (GNS) manufactured by one of the major producers: Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), Midwest Grain Products (MGP), or Grain Processing Corporation (GPC), whose headquarters and principal distilleries are in Illinois, Kansas and Iowa respectively. (i.e., where most grain is farmed.)

...

Not surprisingly, Tito's doesn't give tours. That's because they don't have grain silos, grain mills, mash cookers, fermenters, and the other trappings of a real from-scratch distillery.

Exactly, it's a bunch of grain neutral spirits.

As far as I'm aware the only real difference amongst vodkas is the texture depending on whether it's made from grain or potatoes. Grain is described as liquid (watery) and potato is described as silky (oily).

I've only ever had grain vodka so I'm not sure if that's even true.

I'll tell you a story about potatoes that a Swedish officer told me:

Potatoes only existed in the king's botanical garden in Sweden for many years. They were a mere curiosity.
Until some scientist figured out that you can make vodka out of them. All of a sudden, there were potato farms all over Sweden.
And then the people figured out that you can also eat the potatoes.

It's some good stuff but unfortunately they had to reformulate it in the US because of some chemical present in the grass not being approved by FDA or something like that.

I'm a scotch guy, I don't get premium vodkas, it's pretty much tasteless. I only use it for mixing with fruit juices for brunch (cape cod, greyhound, screwdriver etc) and for guests.

Now I feel stupid... and cheated. Love this forum. I like Tito's due to its Texas' heritage, but now I feel like it's a scam.

“Tito” runs radio ads in my area; he’s annoying and reeks of SJWism.

“Vodka for dog people”? Gay. Go pander elsewhere.

I think it comes with the territory. RVF, EE, and vodka all go together.

There's no such thing. Vodka, these days, is for those of its place of origin. And women, poofs & soy boys.

I used to do that with Grey Goose ten years ago when it had a phase of being the "it" brand of vodka. I'd pour Finlandia or Danzka into the Grey Goose bottle to sucker simpletons and women (sorry for the redundancy). I received the status of serving "the best" and didn't suffer from paying an inflated price for piss in a bottle.

I never understood why people were on the GG train. It was clearly inferior vodka at an elevated price. Other than simpletons are always impressed by surface realties (it's more expensive, therefore it has to be better) I'm thinking a lot of people also did the substitution trick and those who never bit the bullet to pay for their own GG had the impression that GG was great due to being served better vodka when a guest of someone with host-game.

It's funny because all foreigners (myself included) love Zubrowka... but if you ask someone from Poland you'll always get the same answer...

"Nothing special, but at least it's cheap".

I've asked dozens of times and they always say they consider it an average vodka.

And yet I still love that shit.

Polish honey vodka (krupnik) is also amazing... easiest way to get someone drunk in a few minutes. People just drink half the bottle without noticing it is as strong as standard vodka.

You couldn't pull that kind of stunt with an expensive single malt.

Anyway, Trader Joe's $10 vodkas might be a little better than kirkland's.
