60 days after switching phone to B&W
I heard that changing a phone to black and white helps battery life and so I did it. It certainly helps the battery life but a few other things happened too:

* Less screen time (probably due to all images looking boring)
* More reading of articles
* More podcast listening

I'm going to continue with it for now.

Downside is on mine it disabled the night shift blue light filter so you still end up hurting your eyes. I hope they fixed that in the new iOS.

I've heard that using your phone in B&W makes it less "addictive" than using it in color. Personally speaking, I've found that to be true.

RE: 60 days after switching phone to B&W
I switched to B&W this morning, already found myself spending less time on my phone. Not sure on the battery life yet, but I’ll stick with it.

Repped.

Just to be clear, black and white in the sense of starting to use old non-smartphone phone?

Your phone has a black and white mode (grayscale) in accessibility settings. It's a good way to reduce distractions.

Unfortunately you do need it on sometimes. For examples if you’ve got an active job search going on or you’re a salesman you’re throwing out tons of messages and emails. You need to keep the phone on because you can’t afford to miss a call.

I'm a big believer in tricking your brain into supporting better behaviors. I view myself (all people, to different extents) as having an internal adversary who is
lazy and destructive and must fooled into submission.

This hack sounds promising. I'm trying it on my laptop as well.

To this who say 'just use a non-smart phone or turn off your phone', you're missing the useful tool of taking baby steps to develop new habits.

Been using it today, I like it, makes my phone more like the kindle and less exciting. Plus the photos look cooler in black and white.

I should add that this isn't even a phone. It's the latest iPod touch and the original goal was to eliminate distractions when walking every day. My number was ported to google voice for a one time $25 fee, eliminating phone bills for the last two years. Plus, I get email transcripts of voice mails. just gotta be on wifi, which is everywhere. i basically stay connected and catch everything but missing calls lets people know who the F is in charge.

Basically found myself getting annoyed traveling around with the weight of normal smartphonephones and the 80gram iPod was the lightest alternative. Now, I'm looking at the 10gram Zanco Z1:

I got a Unihertz Atom a few months back. I wanted to be able to continue using Whatsapp but didn't want to surf the internet/use social media and I still wanted a decent camera. This thing is so tiny you have to really want to use it to actually spend time on it.

My phone usage must have dropped 90% since getting it.

BTW if anyone is considering this in the US, don't. It's a 2G GSM phone which our networks here are turning off currently and it is off in most markets already.

Useful setting I use (for iphone)

General > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut > Greyscale (select)

This allows you to toggle with 3 clicks on the home button between B&W and Colour. Keeping B&W for the majority of my use but a quick revert to colour when required.

On my old phone this killed Instagram for me. It's amazing how much the vibrant colors suck you in!
