Tokyo unless you're Korean

But in Japan you have to know Japanese (Koreans speak English pretty decently but Japan is way better as a foreigner for many reasons) - though I'd assume you'd be doing that anyway if you're working there

I wasn't wild about Osaka, other than eating on Dotonbori and clothes shopping; I seemed to have run into a disproportionate amount of weirdos and rude people while there relative to other places in Japan, but maybe it was just bad luck on my part. It could certainly be worse; some smaller cities in Japan are painfully dull, which Osaka obviously isn't. Glad to hear guys have had success there.
