RE: The Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez thread
Above thoughts are missing some of the basics, IMO.

The incumbent she unseated is and had been for a long time a machine / party insider / good 'ol boy network politician. He took a lot for granted and her campaign was savvy enough to capitalize on the pain points that caused ill will among the majority of the voting district.

That incumbent, BTW, was inline to be speaker of the house, which would make him second in line of succession to the presidency. His family and by association he himself, did not live in the district, his kids went to school in DC, he did few memorable things that made life better for his low income, low education constituents, yet for years he held an insiders position with a lot of power and juice.

I heard a political consultant, a real life one, not the kind you see on TV, say if she had not unseated the incumbent they it would only be a matter of time until the next guy/girl does.

Can't help but to focus a comment on this. In the NYC world of money and finance educational credentials are only one piece of the pie for getting a job, and only a small piece at that. Network, connections, social circles count way more.

Looks awfully like Mattress Girl.

That's a rabbit hole I'm not going any further down.

(07-03-2018 10:33 PM)BlueMark Wrote:  So far it seems like a lot of red states are not receptive to socialism because of their low cost of living. Texas for example has very cheap real estate that doesn't rise very much in price, due to the abundant land and lack of obstructions to development. That seems to be changing in e.g. Austin though, as many people move there from California and New York and drive up the housing prices.

The (((left))) got frustrated in the 50's and even more so in the 60's when they tried to mobilize American workers into communism, or at least hard socialism. Alas, they got no traction because the average worker was doing ok, and a lot of the factory workers were already unionized. Hard core communism could not bring anything to them that they did not already have except maybe higher union dues. It was after this point that the (((leftist))) participants got even more radical and started bombing campaigns in the late 60's and into the 70's.

Throughout history, in any population radical political change has to strike a chord with (aspiring family) men who are at the end of their economic rope in order to get traction. In pre-WW2 Germany, there were thousands of pissed off unemployed guys with no money, no job prospects and no families just itching for a cause to join. They found a place with the brownshirts, and the rest is unfortunate history. Ditto for much of the current Islamic world - no wife? no job? no way to raise a family? Fear not - that means if you volunteer to drive the truck bomb into the American compound, your martyrdom will at least deliver you to paradise. Sometimes the Imam will even hook up your family with some cash.

Hence, unless red state America is really THAT bad off (and it isn't - not yet), I don't see thousands of trailer park guys lining up to join a political movement until things get severely skewed. Mere survival is still just too easy, even during tough economic times. At the moment, potential powder kegs of pissed off men can still just simply move away or find some other relief - think about this the next time (((someone))) praises the virtues of legal pot, kids.

PS - Don't forget that there were only about 20k votes cast during the primary in Queens where that dude faced chick won. The people there are either asleep or couldn't care less, and even then her victory would not have happened absent some key levels of (((support))).

Depends on what kind of "Economics" degree she got. If it skewed towards applied, which would include extensive classes in math, probability, statisics, and programming, she could have gotten a finance job in NYC. Maybe not at a white shoe investment bank like Goldman or Morgan, but she could have gotten one.

I suspect her "Economics" degree did not involve a lot of quant heavy lifting.

You could be right, but it all depends how she sliced the course selection. The outlne of requirements for a BA in Economics from Boston University are here. According to that page, there is no way to escape at least one calculus class (minimum passing grade would be a C). She finished fourth in her class overall, according to Crappipedia. Meanwhile, grade inflation at the university level is rampant nowadays, including at BU. I would be interested to know how many C grades were given at all in that calculus class. Hence, if her stated education record is to be believed and grade inflation is routine, she could not have received more than one or two Cs and graduate fourth in the class.

Watered down SAT tests likely helped her gain admission but like many schools lately, BU does not publish a minimum SAT/ACT admission test score. I'm surprised they still require it at all, given current trends.

Given her double major in International Relations (a joke major) and her interest in political action since at least high school, I suspect she did not risk the harder choices available in the Economics curriculum in order to finish with as high a GPA as possible. Regardless, you can be sure if she got mostly As on her transcript, we'd have seen it published by now.

The US wont go down the path of socialism but that doesn't mean it wont be hurt by taking the path it is on currently. It will have to watch as the EU goes down the toilet along with the ME, Africa, SA and parts of Asia.

She appears to have gotten a BA in Econ which is not the same as a BS. You can seriously bullshit your way through any BA degree and the fact that she’s a Latina means that she likely got AAd into Boston U (a decent school) and repeated the mantras like a loyal Bolshevik in training. Most of her time at college was probably protesting and agitating while other students were trying to actually learn.

That said, an Econ degree even from a top school is no guarantee of anything. She probably could have gotten an internship in Investment Banking for her diversity cred, but in all likelihood she would have been weeded out quick as I can’t imagine her being able to cut it in the least.

I’ll also note that I know a guy with an Econ degree from U of Chicago (one of the best schools in the world) and works in a mediocre admin type job likely at 12-15 USD per hour. I think he’s just not motivated though.

One of my wife's classmates from college has an econ degree (so does my wife). He ended up working for international corporations. From what I understand, he did hardcore economic analysis that these companies depended on, when making long term financial and investment plans. i.e. Where in the world to put a new factory, etc.

He also teaches at UCLA and is routinely invited by industry groups to give lectures. Met the guy... he is a brilliant individual.

Most universities have both a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Bacherlor of Arts in Economics.

My university (top 20 public uni) had both. The BS had much higher requirements and you had to apply to get into that program. It was much more math, stats based. The BA was the net for the flunkies and consisted of more subjective analysis which always ended up being about economic justice type stuff. The BA in Econ was also for people that couldn’t get into the business school programs.

Econ is a very legit major if it’s from a good school and has a quant focus.

Econ grads sometimes struggle a bit after graduating. Both my sister and I got them (my sister from U Chi), and it took us both about a year to get jobs in the Econ/Finance world.

I can testify to this.

I have a First Class Honours degree BA in Economics. I know jack shit about economics.. jack shit.
I blagged my way through the obligatory maths, statistics, econometrics classes in my first year. Once I had got into the second year I specialised in Social "Sciences" requiring essay writing and never looked back.

A newly elected official going on about #myeconomicsdegree -- actually laughable.

If she was smart enough and had the math skills, she could have gone into real economics...working for a wall street firm as an analyst. They'd hire her in a microsecond because she's female and hispanic. Big firms are dying for female employees who have serious technical skills.

But...

If she had real math skills and work ethic, she would not be a socialist. By definition. She'd be making money and getting hot rich men to propose marriage to her. She'd be a winner.

Here we see the essence of socialism.

Economy majors are a mixed bag - there are the usual female coasters who want their HR or marketing job, but then there are also the genius-level quants and future Hedge Fund managers among them.

My guess is that she is rather one of the first kind.

His observations match mine.

As well, payscale.com puts Econ/Finance majors as the 7th best paid
.

Again, there are some catches to that. Not all Econ majors are the same as many have said plus you often have to live in very expensive places.

A man is walking down the street when he comes upon the following flyer from a local university:

Sensational NEW course! Get a degree in nuclear physics with no effort at all! For applications and inquiries, visit the university admissions office.

Intrigued, the man visits the university and asks the administrator about the course.

"Oh it's simple," says the administrator. "We perform a surgical procedure to temporarily remove your brain and hook it up to our advanced machine learning interface. No effort required."

"I see. And how long does the course last?" asks the man.

"Five years."

"Five years! But what will I do without a brain all that time?"

"Well, you could study economics."

Double fuck you to a troll, but my education is in economics - have been going to economics libraries since age 16.

So fuck you!

And I personally met those 2 extremes during my economics studies - "study-something" girls and future Hedge Fund managers high-performers sitting side by side.
