Uncle Sam

Used to recruit Americans to fight wars. Seen as a patriotic symbol in the military. I never understood it but the military still uses it.

RE: Inspirational paintings depicting positive values.
The Battle of Tours, when Frenchmen were proud, patriotic motherfuckers, and when muslim invaders were treated with what they truly deserve: hammer to the face!

And in the shock of battle the men of the North seemed like a sea that cannot be moved. Firmly they stood, one close to another, forming as it were a bulwark of ice; and with great blows of their swords they hewed down the Arabs. Drawn up in a band around their chief, the people of the Austrasians carried all before them. Their tireless hands drove their swords down to the breasts [of the foe].

Charles Martel, making Frankia great for the first time in history, smiting terrorists before it was cool. Homeboy majestic as fuck, riding white stallion raising big saracen-killing axe but not white knighting no one. This one white knight that Little Dark can not beat. Bruh telling 30,000 Muslims to go home way before da club was invented. You can see right there under his horse that bitch who started this all. Bitches be so extra, running around battlefield looking so high on dope. This gal there is the reason why these Muslim white knights invade us but Charlie is back in town so ya all can go home and cry now.

I'm looking for a large print of this painting to put on my wall.

If you ever get a chance to see it in person (at the Chicago Art Institute), the Song of the Lark is amazing and no photo does it justice. Eleanor Roosevelt's favorite painting.

In a separate thread, there was a mention of a Russian artist (still alive) who paints very feminine gorgeous paintings of women. As if the main focus was on their femininity. I remember being impressed with his work at the time, and I've tried finding his online store again but to no avail. Any suggestions?

That is a beautiful painting.

Reminds me of "The Angelus" by Millet.

[Image: 1200px-JEAN-FRAN%C3%87OIS_MILLET_-_El_%C..._cm%29.jpg]

There is something inherently human about a painting in a pastoral setting.

And let's not forget Monet, who could make even a couple of haystacks seem somehow infused with significance.

Haystacks, End of Summer, by Claude Monet, 1891.

Fine as long as no pictures of Frida Kahlo.

Hahaha

I never understood the fascination with Frida Kahlo. Having read books about that time period, apparently she was considered "hot" and "exotic" during those days.

She slept her way through Europe banging all the European artists of the day. Hell even Leon Trotsky hit that during his time in Mexico before he got killed.

I never understood it. I could never get over her mustache.

The sad part is that she's been seeing as the representation of Mexican women world wide and its because of her the world thinks Mexican women are ugly and have mustaches. It is what it is.

Besides art I am also interested in mathematics, shit I'm still studying math in my late 20s. I like the depiction of math in art, such as the use of the golden ratio. Here is a painting:

I always thought the artist Beth Van Hoesen captured the personality and individuality of animals. Used to see her prints everywhere.

Flashman at the charge above reminds me of the great paintings inspired by L'enlevement des Sabines, by J L David in particular, as a continuation of the work of Nicolas Poussin

"Reply of the Zhaporizian Cossacks"

So much could be said, but basically they sent a big fuck you to the mighty Ottoman Sultan.

Quote:Sultan Mehmed IV to the Zaporozhian Cossacks:

As the Sultan; son of Muhammad; brother of the sun and moon; grandson and viceroy of God; ruler of the kingdoms of Macedonia, Babylon, Jerusalem, Upper and Lower Egypt; emperor of emperors; sovereign of sovereigns; extraordinary knight, never defeated; steadfast guardian of the tomb of Jesus Christ; trustee chosen by God Himself; the hope and comfort of Muslims; confounder and great defender of Christians - I command you, the Zaporogian Cossacks, to submit to me voluntarily and without any resistance, and to desist from troubling me with your attacks.

--Turkish Sultan Mehmed IV

The Cossacks' reply came as a stream of invective and vulgar rhymes, parodying the Sultan's titles:[citation needed]

Zaporozhian Cossacks to the Turkish Sultan!

O sultan, Turkish devil and damned devil's kith and kin, secretary to Lucifer himself. What the devil kind of knight are thou, that canst not slay a hedgehog with your naked arse? The devil shits, and your army eats. Thou shalt not, thou son of a whore, make subjects of Christian sons; we have no fear of your army, by land and by sea we will battle with thee, fuck thy mother.

Thou Babylonian scullion, Macedonian wheelwright, brewer of Jerusalem, goat-fucker of Alexandria, swineherd of Greater and Lesser Egypt, pig of Armenia, Podolian thief, catamite of Tartary, hangman of Kamyanets, and fool of all the world and underworld, an idiot before God, grandson of the Serpent, and the crick in our dick. Pig's snout, mare's arse, slaughterhouse cur, unchristened brow, screw thine own mother!

So the Zaporozhians declare, you lowlife. You won't even be herding pigs for the Christians. Now we'll conclude, for we don't know the date and don't own a calendar; the moon's in the sky, the year with the Lord, the day's the same over here as it is over there; for this kiss our arse!

- Koshovyi otaman Ivan Sirko, with the whole Zaporozhian Host.

Quote:The Course of Empire is a series of five paintings created by Thomas Cole in the years 1833–36. It is notable in part for reflecting popular American sentiments of the times, when many saw pastoralism as the ideal phase of human civilization, fearing that empire would lead to gluttony and inevitable decay.

Another great Thomas Cole series, The Voyage of Life.
It represents the four stages of life; childhood, youth, manhood, and old age.
