RE: The NPC meme
Hmm, considering the number of PCs reporting trouble falling asleep at night I'll give this piece of advice: put something boring on youtube to listen to before you go to bed. Like a couple hours of a let's play or a podcast you don't care much about. Listening to that stuff keeps your own thoughts from going into overdrive the way they would if you were just laying there wishing you could fall asleep.

Be careful not to put something interesting on, because you'll pay attention to it and stay awake.

I've studied a lot in this area, and at times their description of enlightenment is essentially a 85 IQ Third Worlder who has only basic drives of fatigue, hunger, and sex with no future orientation, especially when coming from a rent-a-mystic who is regurgitating the mystics of old.

Then again, the 85 IQ man is filled with nonstop desire and a fragile ego. You have to carefully apply mystical teachings to your situation. For me it's to understand desire, not be enslaved by the ego, and let go of fear. Tao is the best balance I've found, but it's still up to you fit the teachings in a modern environment.

It comes down to control. If your mystical teachings allow you to be more easily controlled or directed (e.g. yoga consumerism, $80 yoga pants, spending thousands on meditation retreats), you're in NPC land. If the teachings allow you to travel your own path and increase your freedom, you're likely applying it the way it was intended.

All the higher mystics and saints had rather in common that their mind was super-active, their inner dialogue and mental engrams working like crazy. Almost all report of the difficulty of taming the mind - of clearing it, of focusing on either a prayer, a chant or on the nothingness.

The NPC yoga-"entlightenment" starts and ends with eat/pray/love/yoga-merchandise.

I have yet to hear from any enlightened man who was not also quite intelligent - and inability to read or write does not count in the past. True mystics are the farthest thing away from a NPC - at best some filthy sadhus might fit the bill when everyone around them attempts to be one. But even there - the higher Hindu mystics are clearly legions apart from them - it's more like cargo-cult-copy of what a true mystic/spiritual person does - unable to understand that it's not the process of being able to sit still that makes the mystic.

NPCs have been around for awhile now, but I preferred them back in the day. At least they were actually self-aware back then

Then of course there is the classic NPC breakdown/glitch

If I drink two beers on a completely empty stomach, I experience about 15-30 minutes of blissful silence. For NPCs, it turns off their insecurity and allows them to be more "social". If you don't have social insecurities, alcohol actually makes you less social because it slows down your brain.

Unfortunately, alcohol has many side effects, so I see it as short-term "chemical meditation" instead of a permanent solution. When I don't want to feel its effects as strongly, I drink on a full stomach.

the "voice" seems to get as drunk as I am. if I drink too much, it doesn't go away, just gets dumb. if in moderation, it accompanies it.

I have an above average IQ. For years I knew about the news lying and how normies swallow it up and regurgitate it. Calling things fake news and NPC is a stroke of genius. Apparently this has struck a nerve so that even Twitter is banning it. Even that fat landwashed whale David Futrelle is NPCing about it. To think calling people soyboys and SJWs was effective (sort of but not like this).

My god give 4chan (they did this right???!!) a medal for this. Watch the hysteria when President Donald Trump calls people a NPC....do it man do it!!!

RE: The NPC meme
I thought this meme was a little too attached to gamer-lingo to take off, but it seems like it's come along at just the right time. The usual suspects hate being called this. I've been thinking about exactly why so many of them are bristling at the term. A few thoughts:

1. NPCs, by their nature, have no say or agency whatsoever in the course of the game. Not only do they typically have very limited personality, they have no free will. The PC - the Player Character - is the one with free will: the one that makes choices and drives the action. I know no better way to piss off SJWs, who count themselves as a united front of activists with meaningful impact on the world, than to point out how little they actually matter, how much nothing they've actually achieved, and how absolutely interchangeable they all are.

2. Because of their reliance on hashtags, buzzwords, sloganeering, and incomprehensible academic jargon that didn't exist anywhere until a few years ago, any conversation with SJWs is bizarrely fantastical and uncannily repetitive (especially on Twitter - note how similar, even identical, many of the messages they leave there are), like accidentally talking to an NPC in a video game two times in a row.

"#LISTENANDBELIEVE" (insert clap emoji)
"#LISTENANDBELIEVE" (insert clap emoji)
"Welcome to Corneria! The castle is just up ahead."
"Welcome to Corneria! The castle is just up ahead."

3. SJWs are generally very stupid people who believe they are intelligent because of what they say and the opinions they hold. Implying that the sum of their "knowledge" can be reduced to preprogrammed flavor text from an ancillary character is something that deeply upsets them.

4. For many SJWs, the term is very much a legacy of Gamergate. While not every SJW is obsessed with policing video games, everyone obsessed with policing video games is an SJW. "NPC" lifts a term that these same people know very well and throws it back in their faces like one of those homing-missile red shells from a Mario Kart.

5. It's a clever play on one particular SJW hypocrisy that's been escalating for the last several years and they can't stand being called out on it so easily:

Tl;dr: I'm warming to this meme. It makes bad people angry. And that makes Canopus smile.

RE: The NPC meme
This thread really got me thinking about cognition and inner monologues. It's strange to think about thinking itself - and stranger still to think about how what I experience as "thinking" might be entirely different from what someone else experiences as "thinking". For some people thinking appears to be a process of dialogue within the brain, in which a logical path is followed linearly in the form of verbal constructions. In other words, thinking is achieved in the same way in which I am writing and you are reading this sentence. Cognition in this form is thus a process of building and navigating through verbal structures, and all conscious activity in the brain is mediated through language. The inner workings of our minds - and indeed our perceptions of ourselves as distinct beings separate from other people and the universe itself - rely on verbal constructions as a framework. "You" exist as an entity inside of your mind only because "You" can also talk to "Yourself" verbally inside of your brain. But who is "You" and "Yourself", exactly? In other words, when you conduct your inner monologue, who is speaking, and who is listening?

In contrast, when I think about my own cognitive style, there is no separation between "Me" and "Myself" in my mind. There is no need for an inner monologue because there is no separation of self. The idea of verbally enunciating ideas inside my mind feels as strange to me as speaking out loud to myself. My inner consciousness is not a rigid stream of verbalized language shaped into precise, logical constructions. It is rather more of a formless, floating cloud of feelings and intuitions. When I seek to translate something from that cloud into a verbal construction, only then does language enter my cognitive process. Thus as I write this text, I am essentially scooping out a bowl of my intuitive, pre-vebal cognition and translating it into English language. The ideas that you're reading right now did not exist verbally pre-formed in my mind. I did not think about them in any sort of inner monologue. They were just there, inchoate and unformed, sort of floating around in a pre-verbal state. But now they have been exported through the process of verbal construction into a format that is logical coherent to other minds.

I would love to get some other takes on this. Can anyone relate to this process of cognition? Can anyone who has a heavy internal monologue explain their process of cognition? I find this rather fascinating.

RE: The NPC meme
My thoughts are 95% verbal with some pictures. I am not talking to myself. Rather, it’s like a discourse to an imaginary audience, sometimes very precise and structured, sometimes ramblings, expletives or exclamations. It’s usually very analytical.

When I was a kid I would ask foreigners ‘in what language do you think?’ because I could not envision nonverbal thought. Personally I think about half/half in English and in French.

I am not visual at all. I don’t remember images. I hate it when someone explains something with a drawing. I want words!!

Note that I am an extreme introvert. Introverts are known to use the Broca area more (speech area in the brain). Could it be that introverts think more in words? (Specifically, extroverts form their thoughts as they speak, while introverts rehearse what they are going to say in the Broca area before speaking. Which is why when you ask an introvert a question there is often a few seconds of silence before the answer arrives).

I too have posed this question many times (not just as a kid). Until I got a few answers saying they had no idea what I was talking about did I realize not everyone thinks in words. When I started a job that required me to speak English and Spanish besides my native language I started thinking in all of these. Then Spanish ceased to be a requirement and I stopped.

My gf also says I speak when I'm asleep and it goes in both English and Portuguese, but English is sadly taking over given both work and most of my other activities are in English. Now it reached a point where if I'm thinking in Portuguese I sometimes fill sentences with English words because my mind goes faster to that than to the internal Portuguese dictionary.

I never gave much thought to this to be quite honest and I realize that to non-verbal people it must sound really strange.

I can't specify a %, but I cannot even remember the last non-verbal thought I had. I mean, sometimes I find myself fantasizing about a girl I saw in the street, but I don't consider that exactly thinking, and usually I start an internal monologue about how I shouldn't be doing it.

However, I am not an extreme introvert. I would say I'm fairly balanced. I don't care for big crowds and groups, but I can be quite social in small groups or on 1-2-1s, if the conversation isn't boring, that is. I don't know how that plays out. I am also fairly impulsive when I speak and its gotten me in trouble more than once.

This NPC meme is not only great in itself, but it also brings many interesting questions and topics with it that can be discussed for hours.

What you're describing here is what I experience as the creative process, being struck with the lightning of the creative muse. You just suddenly know you have something ready and can write pages without stopping to think. The content already exists in your mind, you simply have to put it on paper. It seems quite similar to a platonic concept of the world of ideas manifesting into the world of practicality.

I used to work like this all the time, but I began deliberately forcing myself to work more structured, rationally with my mind, because the other process was too unreliable and random. On the other hand, it is without doubt the best I've written, when in this free flowing mode.

I believe your method is subconscious, more than conscious. Your brain is processing subconsciously and then when ready, simply spits it out as a fully formed thought.

Then there's intuition, which I believe to be a collective unconscious or genetic memory.

Maybe you just have really good intuition and genetic memory and doesn't need to rely on self talk?

What I've found is that awareness of cognitive processes, i.e. listening to internal monologue, is a big step forward already, understanding how you react, allows you to anticipate, googled it, is called Metacognition. It's not so much the inner voice, but the awareness of the cognitive process that matters, instead of reacting like an automaton.

Quote:Metacognologists believe that the ability to consciously think about thinking is unique to sapient species

I just googled this, so I'll just throw it out there, but doesn't it confirm the NPC meme nicely? Sapience and awareness of one's own cognitive process goes together. Which also means, that the cognitive process is not you, it's that "who or what" which observes this process that is the you.

Reading this thread and trying to understand it, I think the best way of describing it in layman's terms would be this: NPC types are the kind of people that go see recent Adam Sandler movies and actually find it funny.

RE: The NPC meme
I have to say I think the NPC meme is by far the most brilliant one the right has come up mostly for the reasons people have said. The mockery of using it is just brutal. The TSwift one is amazing.

I've always had a very fruitful, ongoing inner dialogue. I also read a ton of books so I think that plays into it. My mind has always gone a mile a minute and is quite difficult to slow down, so I try mindfulness for that which I'd recommend - some nights I wouldn't be able to sleep without it [or lots of pharma which I don't want to take.]

Basically what roosh said about it.

RE: The NPC meme
Maybe what I like most about the new meme culture is that the people creating it are generally unknown, unorganised, uncoordinated low status outsiders. The most resonant memes are probably unleashed on the world by people who don't see sunlight often.

Yet they are to a considerable extent driving the narratives and culture that are put out by major personalities like Paul Joseph Watson and Jack Posobiec.

Conversely the way the left's culture comes about looks more like this:

As mentioned here, most of the major culture creators were outsiders, e.g. Jesus and Buddha. Their message gets adopted and enforced by someone who had the power to, a true alpha. The result is a society that has room for everyone in between the alpha and omega. They can live in the same space and share a culture they both get something from.

But then you look at the left you have the cultural dictates of a small number of jealous gammas from academia, the media and government which are for a mix of the have nots and the guilty haves. Their game is waning as their own rules are increasingly used to destroy their current order and they have no means to defend themselves from it.

Which leads to the second point - the memes of the counter-culture are steeped in religion. The meme has been around for some time in the form of political cartoons. But under the guise of the mainstream media, the political cartoon was relegated to the back pages due to their utter sterility. Now the people have seized the memes of production, memes are on the front page, as they tap into the collective unconscious and facets of deep evolution.

Memes like Pepe, AIDS Skrillex, the NPC, Wojak. These go super viral (the culture) as they communicate to our deeper, non-verbal selves - the same levels of ourselves that are inherently afraid of snakes, spiders and clowns. These are things we all share, which is why they are so resonate. Due to the depth of their nature, we also have little understanding of them and struggle to verablise the conceptions, hence the feeling of potent memes as religious.

I saw the NPC meme popping up heavily a few days ago and instantly understood what the memes meant without need for it to be described. At the deepest level, it perfectly encapsulates the androgynous, empty conformity and nihilism of the new left. It's reminiscent of the Grey alien, which may just be a collective nightmare creature like the succubus.

The grey alien is portrayed as having the same traits as the NPC: a hive of emotionless beings acting as one.

And this is why the left is so upset about the NPC meme. Send a leftists a message saying, "Libtard" and their anger level is 1X. You've sent something into their newer, software level on the brain. At this level it's easier for them to start formulating reasoning to counteract it, "Hitler!", "Not my president!", but a potent NPC meme goes right into the ancient, hardware part of their brain, butt-hurt central. Major malfunction. No cognitive response. Anger 10X.

The last point comes back to the first. There has been a cultural correctness at all times throughout history, which has been opposed top down. The left has taken control of it for the first time fairly recently. The channels that the left is using to control culture are all top-down hierarchies. Meanwhile the counter-culture, which is to a considerable extent created by at best a username is highly diffused and unorganised. The culture war is the guerrilla infowar. And those that are names like Jones, Roosh, Molyneux etc. have and increasingly are operating via more distributed channels. So the points at which the counter-culture could be stopped are ever-more diffuse; and I think by 2030 it will be as unstoppable as P2P filesharing.

When the left does try and pick up the pace in the meme war, they only succeed in becoming the meme, resorting to writing playbooks on how to meme and selling them for money with the biggest company in the world:

How daring. How provocative.

You can't be to dominant top-down culture and the edgy resistance at the same time.
