My goal is to be able to do a pull up with my body weight added. Hopefully, at 190 i'll be able to do a pull up with 190 under me.

A weighted pull up with 190 lbs would be extremely good and closing in on world class.

Every time I pass a jungle gym playground I push the little kids aside. Show them how to do pull-ups to get big and strong.

They try to go back to playing like children. I take that little kid and push him hard. I say hey! don’t you want to be a real man? And they do!

All of a sudden it’s a goddamn pull up contest. Little kids hanging like a troupe of monkeys trying to wiggle dat whittle chin above the mark. Uh you’re welcome earth.

That reminds me two girls watching me doing my pull ups routine.

I did 5 sets of 5 off a tree branch in my 15 minute break at work along with 10 clap push-ups and 15 normal push-ups.

I'll have to see what my max is off a real bar at the gym tomorrow.

Now, I'd probably be lucky if I did 6? Or 8? Probably 6. But it's one of those things where if you just do them every morning, in a month or two you can quickly ramp back up to your usual max.

Unless you got fat. Then, I mean, you're still going to be fat.

When I was obese 2 (medically) early summer I could do 2. Now I'm not considered obese (still overweight, lost 60 pounds) and I banged out a bunch today but I'll have to do proper ones at the gym tomorrow to get a real number.

Down 60 lbs now? Wow! You are still losing weight. That's great, Man. You really took control of that situation and were not fucking around. You should be very proud.

Makes me feel nice to know that I was able to help. You're my biggest (but getting smaller every day) success story. Whip

If you've been watching the news, or read about this in the other thread, you may have seen the story of the guy who took off on a hang-glider without being attached!

Read about it here for some useful inspiration for getting those reps done;

https://www.rooshvforum.com/thread-71443...pid1894424

So as well as giving you a great back, bi's and forearms, and looking cool when you do them, pullups may indeed save your live someday.

30 deadhang. 40 when I was training them.

I'm 170 to 180 pounds.

Max with weights was 90 pounds attached by a belt for 5 sets of 10 cheating on the last few reps and on cycle.

RE: How many Pullups can you do?
I like to do them in reps of 5 for a few sets. I can do about 10 of them in a row from dead hang if I were to do them at the beginning of the workout, but I never do that I always just do them in sets.

12 but surprisingly only 5 chin ups. Usually it’s the other way around for most people.

RE: How many Pullups can you do?
After getting over my little 'form-shock' episode (see above), I've tightened up my technique, used static holds and re-filmed my pullups.

So now, I can get;

10 good ones. Real good.
15 fast and loose, bit iffy ones.

I'm a lot more buoyed than I was previously. In fact, I didn't realise how good my back looked when I was doing pullups. Size isn't anything to write home about, but every muscle is popping out nicely.

Static holds are the only real thing I've done differently, and I'd recommend them wholeheartedly. I haven't started adding weight yet. If I can every do 3 sets of 10 good ones, I'll start adding weight to the belt.

H1n1 brings up a good point that just because you can add weight doesn't mean you should when it comes to Chins.

RE: How many Pullups can you do?
Incidentally, I've moved to doing close grip chins as my only Bicep exercise.

This is primarily because of some nasty tendinitis on my right arm from doing curls. Chins don't hurt though.

I haven't missed the curls, if anything my Bi's are responding better than ever to the new stimulus.

And yes, this will undoubtedly have helped when moving over to the wider-gripped (back) pullups.

^ I find Chin ups with weight to be far superior to curls. I'm really not a big fan of curls.

RE: How many Pullups can you do?
I managed to work my way up to 3 sets of 10 pull ups from not being able to do a single pull up.

I started with just trying to fall down from the bar as slowly as possible:
I would first hold onto the bar then lower myself as slowly as possible.

Once that got easier I started actually trying to do a pull up. (I made sure my form was as good as possible. Youtube has some good guides for this)

I would try to do as many as I could then I would go to the pull down machine to finish off the reps that I couldn't do on the pull up bar.

I looked like a weakling but after 2 months of this I could do 3x10 pull ups (more than what most of the other people in the gym could do Smile )

RE: How many Pullups can you do?
I saw this dude on JRE talking about being farmer strong .So I did 1 pull up a day for a week then 2 a day for a week then 3 and so on.

I have major tricep issues from kipping in crossfit it fucked me up for years..Right now I'm doing 9 a day and it feels easy..I struggled on 3 and 5 a day with pain in my triceps...So I did those numbers for 2 weeks..I was also ill on 6 so had to take a break for a couple of weeks.

This way I don't get soarness or pain and I can do other training without worry of injury at my age

I can do 20 pull-ups straight but I'm naturally lean. I'm shooting for 30 now!

That makes sense. I'm very extremities dominant in that regard. I have to really destroy my back to make it grow but if I start curling a few times a week my arms get weird.

Lately I've been focusing more on my back and less on the gunz. I want that cape thing to start happening where all my shirts fit like capes.

RE: How many Pullups can you do?

Wide grip L: 1 rep for 5 sets.

One arm assisted: 1 rep for 5 sets, current strength level has my assisting hand at shoulder level at the bottom of the movement. I also add an L at the top of the movement to make it even more tough.

Front lever row, straddle: 1 rep for 5 sets, not a pull-up exercise per se but still an upper body pulling movement.

More exciting when all 3 are combined into a super set.

These exercises, their variations, as how to execute them can be found in Coach Sommer's Science of Gymnastics Strength Training available for free on the internet. His focus is primarily on doing fewer reps of a harder variation of any exercise. According to him, once you can easily do 5 reps on any exercise, it's way too easy for you and will not give you any additional strength gains, and so move on to the next harder variation of that exercise. You can do this by either decreasing the leverage (such as adding an L to a standard pull-up), or increasing the resistance (such as wearing a weighted vest or holding for a few seconds at the top of the movement before coming back to a dead hang). Also there is a strong emphasis on core strength as the variations get harder so you end up training your core as well.

Basically, if we're talking max strength gains, it's not about the number of reps you can do, but the amount of tension you can generate in your muscles. You can do 15 to 20 standard chin-ups to impress your friends at the park, and it's also generally good for strength endurance, but during training focus on practicing harder variations where you can barely pull off 3 reps. At a point, standard pull-ups or chins just become extremely boring or just great for a warm up.
