Google Fiber
Does anyone use Google Fiber as an ISP? I'm relocating to a city which provides this service and was wondering if anyone recommends it. Google is by no means a trustworthy company, how are they when it comes to providing an internet service?

The service has been put on hold since 2016 and some regard the whole thing as a failure.

Quote:In October 2016, all expansion plans were put on hold and some jobs were cut. Google Fiber will continue to provide service in the cities where it is already installed.

RE: Google Fiber
Google tend to offer a good service in exchange of your privacy. Expect Google to analyze everything you connect to. In US most ISP does that anyways.

I would get the 10mbps free version and use a good VPN just for the piss.

Google is creepy. I typed "brisket" on Apple Maps on my iPhone. I opened YouTube app minutes later and there was an ad about brisket. I never typed that word before.

Yesterday I opened the "find a Russian wife abroad" thread and YouTube app gave me a recommendation about "how it is to be married to a Russian".

That's quite creepy since I use an DNS with ad blocking and an ad blocking with a comprehensive filter list (social media, etc) in mobile Safari. I don't have Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat. I use DuckDuckGo for searches.

This forum uses https so I don't know how Google got the "russian wife" from. The most plausible is if this forum is using analytics from Google but I don't think that's the case.

The only Google product I can't escape for now is YouTube. But if the day comes, I will block Google domain completely.

RE: Google Fiber
This is weird as hell;

Yesterday one of my jobs was to move a day bed from a guys apartment to his office. I took a look at the apartment and the bed and said I need my wrench to take off the feet of the day bad to get it to fit out of the apartment. I go to my truck and get the wrench.

Today I get an email from amazon for wrenches. I know what hardware store I bought this wrench at. I never typed in “wrench” at amazon or google and I do not have Alexa installed on my iPhone.

What. The. Fuck.

Happens all the time.
Someone writing 10 years ago that his phone listens and analyzes his voice would be thought as schizo.

God only knows how much data they have or how advanced their AI algorithm really is.

The weirdest part is that even though most people are aware of this, they still continue to use smartphones.

This forum absolutely uses Google Analytics (almost all websites do). Additionally, if a youtube video is embedded in a thread, I'm fairly certain they are able to gather information about the thread and whoever views the video.

As for the Apple Maps-Youtube connection, I think Apple devices put an advertising ID on your phone and they probably use Google to process searches in their maps app. This ID combined with the search you did from Apple maps could have triggered the ad showing.

Google Listening to you

Tell them too much, they wouldn't understand; tell them what they know, they would yawn.
They have to move up by responding to challenges, not too easy not too hard, until they paused at what they always think is the end of the road for all time instead of a momentary break in an endless upward spiral

RE: Google Fiber
Even with this forum using Google Analytics, I was expecting my ad blocker to block that nasty script.

I was blocking Facebook completely (whole domain). Google will join the (block) list. YouTube app will continue to work since it doesn't use Content Blocker.

Apple is telling the world about how it protects user's privacy but we know Tim Cook is full of shit. iOS (last night update) is supposed to add "intelligent tracking prevention". What's the point if they're tracking you? They know iPhone sales will go down eventually and they're doing anything to get some extra profit.

RE: Google Fiber
Joost, this forum certainly uses google analytics. I just saw it on the source code. You might need to configure additional settings in your ad block to block it. Or use another one that does block it.

RE: Google Fiber
I totally forgot I made this thread. As an update I have been using Google Fiber since January and I have no complaints about the service so far.

Everything you might be paranoid about is true, especially the targeted ads. However you can put certain settings on your phone to limit the tracking. I especially filter what my browser uses with uBlock Origin. A vpn always helps add a certain level of privacy.

The forum definitely uses Google Analytics, I have it blocked using uBlock.
