RE: The RVF worst-case-scenario survival/preparedness thread.
Quote:Some of the most nutritious greens include spinach, kale, romaine, watercress, and arugula (see "Salad greens by the numbers"). They are rich in a combination of vitamins A, C, and K; several B vitamins (including folate); and potassium.

These are not starvation remedies. They are vitamin supplements for a diet of bland, dense foods like potatoes, rice and cereals (or whatever horrible government rations you're provided).

Thoughts for the day:

You might need to megadose vitamin C in a week or you might need to megadose it in a year, but what you've got now is possibly all you're going to get for the duration of this crisis. The virus seems to run over a course of 2 weeks or so from the beginning of symptoms showing (if you're young and fortunate). You therefore need to save 2-weeks-megadose multiplied by the number of people you are responsible for. What remains can be used like a common supplement for your daily regimen.

Also, for folks in the city and suburbs the time to build a viable bug-out was 6 months ago but if you don't have one yet then get started now. There is advice scattered around the forum for what to put in it. You need to have something ready to go if for some reason you need to move in a hurry. Don't trap your mental processes in "coronavirus". Things are getting dicey and it's no longer unfathomable that you could wake up to a 2AM sunrise.

Last minute addendum:

Buy a few foaming hand wash dispensers if you can still get them (hardware stores may even have a limited supply). You can refill them with watered down antibacterial dishwashing detergent and they are not only far more effective when it comes to cleaning your hands but they also make the detergent products last a lot longer. I would say they're at least three time as efficient as normal liquid soap pumps.

If the tablets are getting sold out: get the bulk bodybuilding supplement form. Either Sodium Ascorbate Powder, or L-Ascorbic Acid. There's currently no Australian shortage of it on Ebay. The Purewellness brand of the latter is $50 for 2kgs. I don't think Aussie society will go south quick enough that you won't receive it. Yeah, it mightn't be the liposomal form, but it's something.

I should have 2 kgs by Monday, 5kgs by Thursday, God willing.

With spinach: the brick form takes up less freezer space than the portion form. Avoid microwave cooking or reheating.

So, all you suburbanites and hive dwellers know how to make one of these from scratch, right?

Variations exist but this one is at the apex of safe, simple and effective. I say safe because sometimes you need to get out fast and you don't want to have to spend a long time messing around with a door brace. You also might need to let someone in quickly and re-brace the door swiftly afterward.

You'll note that the open-ended bracket is on the hinge side of the door where it's less likely to be bumped over the top by an energetic thump against the door itself.

The base materials per door are going to be barely ten bucks. Even if you never get to the point where you decide to install them it's still not much of a loss.

Ok then it makes sense. I train for a different scenario (as is not expecting anything from the gov) and already have vitamins covered.

The bulk crystals are probably the best to have. I've got 3kg and 10kg more on the way. I'm making up tubs of it for family and friends at risk- it was the most practical thing I could think of to do for my community at this moment in time. Most will probably be fine and won't need hospital- hopefully the vitamin C might stop most of the more vulnerable from deteriorating to that point, cause if (when) our ICU's get like Italy I don't rate their chances.

Here's what I've written out to accompany it so that they can get their head around it and will hopefully use it.

"Vitamin C dosing instructions.

1. Fill bottom of mug with hot water. Add 1 teaspoon of vitamin c (crystals)
2. Fill bottom of second mug with hot water. Add half teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda (clumpy powder)
3. Fill third mug with cold water.
4. Stir vitamin C mug, throw it back avoiding teeth as much as possible and swallow quickly.
5. Chase with cold water
6. Stir bicarbonate mix, swill and spit out. This will neutralise the acid of the vitamin c and protect your teeth.
7. Rinse with cold water.

For maintenance (especially during outbreak) take twice daily unless you experience loose stools. As soon as you feel the initial symptoms of a cold or fever take every half hour (or until you experience loose stools- unlikely in a fever condition) Continue dosage even if symptoms appear to have passed- loose stools are the indicator that your body is excreting excess vitamin C, and only then reduce the frequency of doses.

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and antiviral and most animals make their own, and just as importantly are able to increase this supply in times of stress or illness. Only primates (including humans), bats, capybara and guinea pigs do not manufacture their own vitamin C, relying instead upon dietary sources.

The Shanghai Medical Association has recently endorsed intravenous vitamin C for all cases of coronavirus following an initial trial. Oral administration is nowhere near as readily absorbed as an intravenous dose, hence the need for regular re-dosing in fever conditions (in addition to the need for re-dosing as more vitamin c will be used). "

I've also ordered an ultrasonic cleaner and some soy lecithin to have a crack at making liposomal vitamin c as per the instructions here:
