RE: The God pill
This is something I noticed at work the other day. For a long time I had been in denial about the reality of God. You never really know how much comfort small religious gestures bring to people until you actually make them.

I have a new job. Previously I worked in the criminal records division of a background checking company, but I hated reading about thugs, drug dealers, and child molesters all day long so I eventually found a new job working in the transportation office of a distribtion center center for the world's largest retailer. I work on assigning loads to truck drivers for the company fleet and deal with the issues surrounding deliveries to the stores; a lot of my work involves face-to-face interaction with the drivers. These drivers all seem to be pretty conservative people; I see guys wearing Trump 2020 or military hats...they'll make offhand comments about praying without a second thought...I recently had a good conversation with one about fishing and shooting.

Anyways, I was sitting in the breakroom during lunch and chatting with one of the drivers. I made a few typical pleasantries with one particular driver, and he sat down and started telling me about his daughter. It seems she is 33 but at death's door due to some kind of blood clotting disorder, and he (who appeared to be in his early 60s) has his own health problems. He was also telling me about the problems he and his daughter were having with getting care in the American medical system bureaucracy.

We finished our lunch, and we walked together into the office. As we were walking in he said something about ranting, and I shook his hand and told him "I'll pray for you guys." He said looked in my eyes and said "Thanks, I appreciate that" but I could tell he was really sincere and really did appreciate it. That night before bed I did pray for them and felt the presence of God as I did it.

This is a small anecdote to be sure, but it certainly goes to show that there is a Real World beyond Clown World, and that people are happy and take comfort in receiving even just a small message from the Real World.

RE: The God pill
At June Carter (Cash)'s memorial service, her stepdaughter Roseanne told a story about her. She was sitting with her in the living room, the phone rang, and June picked it up. She was on the phone for over a half hour, deeply engrossed in conversation. The call ends and June goes "I just had the nicest conversation." She starts telling the stepdaughter about this woman's life and her children and that she had just lost her father. The stepdaughter goes "Well who was it?" And June says, "Well, honey, it was a wrong number." Roseanne said: "That was June. In her eyes there were two kinds of people: those she knew and loved, and those she didn't know and loved. She looked for the best in everyone. It was a way of life for her. ... She was forever lifting people up."

I knew a woman like that. She'd be out and about and people would just talk to her, and she'd ask to pray for them, and she'd pray with them right there on the spot.

It's a good policy not to wait to pray about something that troubles you or someone else.

Unless you're literally in traffic then just do it straight away. It's a rewarding habit to build.

It's a good reminder that everyone is granted different spiritual gifts. Some people like that woman can just light up a room and connect with others effortlessly. Another person might be very gifted at teaching the scriptures in a Bible study. Someone else might simply have a knack for helping out others in need with acts of service and generosity. There are many ways to serve God. Rather than trying to be something you're not (i.e. some archetypal version of a perfect Christian in your mind), use the particular traits and skills you were blessed with to help the people around you as best you can. In this way you will be of the most use to your fellow believers and the best witness for Christ to your non-believing neighbors.

Sure, but my worry there is praying with the end result of making a display of your religiosity. The act of praying and not disguising your beliefs is not the issue, but rather cultivating a specific image. In my high school we had the punks, metalheads, surfers, goths, band nerds, etc....getting down on your knees in the office and crossing yourself so that everyone can see you doesn't seem to be that much different.

I guess I could always do some kind of quick silent prayer, but unless I'm trying to resist some specific fleeting temptation like lust or evil thoughts, going through the ritual of kneeling and crossing somehow has more significance for me.

Quote:And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are; for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret, and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

Matthew 6: 5-6

I actually do that aha.

.

The conservatives are fools: They whine about the decay of traditional values, yet they enthusiastically support technological progress and economic growth. Apparently it never occurs to them that you can’t make rapid, drastic changes in the technology and the economy of a society without causing rapid changes in all other aspects of the society as well, and that such rapid changes inevitably break down traditional values.

This passage as I understand it relates to people wanting to be seen praying for social benefit, or to be viewed as holy by others rather than God. It doesn't mean you can't say a prayer under your breath at your desk, or be public about your belief in God.

This is one of the real issues in our society, is that we are taught that religion is private and it should never be a private affair.

I agree that it is best to pray on your own in a quiet place, but when I tell someone I will pray for them, I don't want to forget or lie about that. So I like Leonard's method of just doing it right there and then.

That's what I was getting at. I don't have a problem praying under my breath and I don't go out of my way to hide my beliefs. To me it just seems that getting on your knees in the office right then and there is religiosity for the sake of cultivating a public image. I like to collect my thoughts and then pray, the solemnity of doing it that way calms me.

Oh well, different strokes for different folks, as they say. If some people wish to do it that way then so be it; its just not for me.

Only if you know the end result. For that reason, it is always said, "Better not to be tempted."

This is to be understood with the backdrop that temptations must occur, but it's more along the lines of "Don't be foolish and play footloose and fancy free but walking into things you don't need to."

Just found this fascinating video (somebody shared it in an Orthodox Meme group on FB). Looking through his Youtube channel he is mostly about anti-veganism and psychedelics, but apparently his last mushroom trip brought him to (Orthodox) Christianity:

A thought crossed my mind the other day.

Maybe someone already posted it.

If the forces of progress had halted their horses around 2010, with things already in a degraded state many would not have been woken from their slumber.

But instead they have ploughed on to sexualising and abusing children, trying to silence criticism of pornography, open borders and so on.

They could have kept most of us in a slumber, but instead they have roused their most feared enemy. They thought they'd done away with it so long ago that they rarely think of it.

It will be interesting, going forward, what the optics will look like as they attack Christianity with the same fervour they defend cooming to smoot.

To me it seems we should be taking Hungary and Polands' lead.

Christianity must come back into the Public Sphere. Our Countries, Local Governments, Leaders, Organizations, High School football teams all need to be openly placed under the Kingship of Jesus Christ.

No more time to worry about the unbelievers feeling uncomfortable. Put prayer back in School. Can we close shopping on Sundays, at least in the morning so people can go to Church.

We need leaders who put their knee down to Christ, not who speak vaguely of God like a freemason does.

This is exactly why President Trump's greatest legacy will be his appointments to the federal courts. Trump and Mitch McConnell have now appointed almost as many federal appellate court judges as Obama did in eight years. Think about that.

If Trump wins re-election and Republicans keep the U.S. Senate, appointing half the members of the federal judiciary will dramatically change the culture of the nation. The U.S. Supreme Court removed God from the public schools in 1962 and made child-killing a constitutional right in 1973.

Only the U.S. Supreme Court can reverse this perversity. Conservative federal appellate court judges have recently lamented that they are powerless to uphold state laws that restrict abortion until the U.S. Supreme Court changes course back to the original understanding of the Constitution. So, these lower courts have already sent a message to the high court.

People who argue that elections are meaningless are utterly ignorant. Elections literally mean life or death to millions of future unborn babies. If Trump does nothing other than appoint constitutionalists to the federal judiciary for eight years, his tenure will be a raging success.
