Playing video games over 30
Leaving the gym last night I overheard one of the guys there talking about he couldnt wait until the new NBA 2K videogame came out with all the new players on their new teams. I looked back assuming he was likely in college, but could tell he was easily in his late 30s.

What's everyone's thoughts on playing video games over 30?

Depends on the games hugely.

Playing Deus Ex is worth as much as reading a book like 1984 or Animal Farm. Best done together

Playing original Blood Omen while reading Neitzche is like eating Salmon with white wine.

Playing NBA or any other sports simulator instead of doing that sport in real life is stupid at any age.

It’s a tough call IMO. They’re super high quality nowadays with the technology available. I just feel like when I do anything involving the TV that I should be doing something else. I watched a stupid ass show last night with my gf and I’m kicking myself that I didn’t read a book or practice guitar. I guess it all comes down to moderation

RE: Playing video games over 30
I’m a gamer. But I also know that gaming is the possible cause of failure. I easily spent 130 hours plus in games like the Witcher 2&3, mass effect, fallout, Skyrim, red dead redemption 1&2, all in a single play through. On average a game like mass effect got s combined 400 hours out of me. This could have been time spent on other things. On the other hand these games shaped who I am. The desire to be a strong male like the protagonist in these games caused me to workout, to read, to practice different things.

Well written stories no matter the format is worth the time it takes to enjoy it. I went overboard Ofcourse. With that said games like 2k are fun but shouldn’t be played too often, the same with other online games.

If you can moderate your vidya consumption just like you would Watching TV I'm sure it's okay. The problem is most gamers do not spend an hour or two gaming. They suck you in, and before you know it you're spending all your free time gaming instead of doing productive things or going out.

The only thing annoying about gaming in your 30s is all the zoomers call you a "boomer"

I stopped playing video games about ten weeks ago. Not because of a deliberate decision, but they fell to the wayside, when I was busy with real life.

As I see video games and other screen escapism they are a source of artificial dopamine. I figured that dopamine should only be released, when one achieves something in real life (like closing a girl).

I am pro anything that makes other males weaker than me or my offspring when it comes to competition.

All males over 30 that aren’t us should spend all day and all night playing video games and being abstinent. Whatever makes them docile. I wouldnt mind tossing a couple grand running a marketing campaign to support that.

You yourself should not waste time on that garbage.

I am sure your couple grand will make all the difference.

The fact that you think of competition as something where you bring everyone else (like literally all of mankind in this case) down instead of focusing of bringing yourself up tells me you are quite a loser in real life.

Like a lot of indulgences, in theory and in moderation it's fine. In practice, 95% if those who do it at all are wasting too much valuable time.
I've seen how excellent a lot of video games are these days, so I refuse to get sucked in.

I think it's roughly approximate to suckling on your mother's breast once you are older than 1.

A little infantile time-wasting is normal and healthy every now and again (not every man is a type A go-go-goer), but beyond that it seems a little off to prioritize it or define yourself by it.

RE: Playing video games over 30
It's a mark of immaturity and the same as an old woman watching emotional television to get her fix.

When a woman gets invested in some screenplay she attaches herself to the emotional roller coaster that is the narrative and at the end feels like shes has been part of it. In truth it was useless and she should be getting that fix from mending family drama and dynamics of real people in her life.

When a guy invests in some game he attaches himself to the achievement that is the game play and at the end feels like he has achieved something. In truth is was useless and he should be getting that achievement satisfaction from something that benefits the woman and family mentioned above.

There is no difference between watching a film, reading a novel, getting drunk with friends, playing videos games - its all recreation of which non of them make you money but work to amuse you and make life that ever more fun.

There is a difference. Socializing with friends is an activity, which should be rewarding, so the resulting dopamine output is justified. Socializing with NPCs inside a video game leads to the similar results, but is entirely worthless. You brain believes you made friends, but you didn't.

Unlike passive entertainment video games produce a higher dopamine output, because they present (fake) challenges to beat. For example: Approach a virtual woman and win her over using your dialog options. Guess what: Your lizard brain can't tell that apart and believes you were successful and are going to have sex for real.

And don't get me started on making in-game money, where you can trick your brain into believing you became rich.

There is a useful scenario for screens though: If you use them to prepare for the real thing. For example: Nowadays race drivers use simulators based on video game technology to prepare for the real track. In this special case you acquire and practice abilities useful in real life afterwards.

But in most cases it's just replacing real experience with fake experience.

RE: Playing video games over 30
Some people are hesitant to see any video games as anything productive, but I think its just another medium for an artist to get his creation to a larger audience. A huge element of it has been hijacked by AAA type studios and unfortunately has injected pozzed politics into a lot of the games, or satanic themes, but other than that I believe there are a lot of great ones I will probably play regardless of my age. I played a game four months ago and probably won't play another for a while, but I've kept a modest retro collection in storage along with works of art, books, and red pill films to give to my possible kids.

I know some guys who do nothing but go to work, come home, smoke weed, and play games, thats their life. I could never be like that. I know others who have never touched a video game, and will say they are usually more outgoing than those who game a lot. Like most posts here, moderation is key. If I'm also old and senile, I may enjoy video games so I don't really think there's an age limit. Old fucks wear diapers after all once they become incontinent, who's to say there won't be starcraft or unreal tournament playoff matches at retirement communities in the near future. The old generation of the 50's-70's only listened to the radio until they were six feet under, then afterwards every old bum was a cathode ray addict, its highly likely that old people will be playing video games in their twilight years to stave off boredom when they can't do anything else, especially if they're unfortunate enough not to have grandkids.

I'm normally a contentious bastard but you made some great points.

I'm still relaxed about people playing video games - if it makes them happy then do it.

I read a lot of novels, but I never see this as a waste as i'm entertaining myself primarily, but the latent effect is improving my vocabulary, knowledge of the world, introduced to news ideas, and so on.

RE: Playing video games over 30
A few women have commented to me how unattractive they find men who play video games. It's probably not far off the level of smoking.

Both smoking and playing games say you are prepared to invest a lot into nothing.

Luckily I have reached the point that I can't really play games.

The last game I really played was Fallout 3 about 10 years ago.

In 2012 I decided to buy a Playstation 3 and Skyrim. I sunk into it for about four days and then I got to a part where a dragon was talking in nerd-speak to me. I turned it off and sold it. I bought Max Payne 3, which I completed in two days. Then I sold the Playstation and game.

In 2014 I bought a powerful PC which came with Bioshock Infinite and Crysis 3. I played Bioshock, which is the most cringe far-left game ever made. The first night I turned it off and thought it was 2AM. I was already felling like a terrible loser. When I found out it was 7AM I'd maybe never felt worse in my life.

In 2015 I bought Fallout 4. I've barely played it and have played nothing since.

The above poster is correct. Games simulate various achievements, but leave you with the negative of lost time. It's like a loop where the lack of real achievement drives people into the game world more. I cannot believe that any gamers are not severley depressed and can't admit to themselves how bad gaming is. It's too much of an injury to see how much time you've wasted and what a lower you are. Easier to disappear into the game world.

Games should be avoided as much as porn.

The only exception, IMO, is occasionally playing something with friends.

RE: Playing video games over 30
I quit gaming in summer 2014. I've mentioned it a couple times in previous threads and most respondents disagreed with my opinions. I feel similarly to gework and others here about gaming.

I don't think gaming makes you a loser or that gamers are stupid or anything like but I believe that the habit is a detriment to our lives. I care about you all and don't want to see you waste years of your life like I had. Before I redpilled I considered gamer as part of my identity. After some painful withdrawal, quitting video games has changed my life for the better. I mostly replaced video games with reading, but I'm also learning to play keyboard, visiting with my friends more often and paying more attention to the important things. Gaming consumes a lot of time and provides few benefits, you can find a better sense of fulfillment and relaxation elsewhere.

Gaming is like smoking weed. Sure there are people who indulge in it every now and then, some socially, and maintain healthy well developed lives. But the people who are really into it are mostly losers afraid of the outside world and communication with real human beings.
