British guy in Los Angeles here. I've never used the term Yank, neither has any British person I know. The only time I've ever seen the word Yank is in trashy newspaper headlines e.g. "Spank the Yank" for an American vs British boxing match.

Round up British prisoners and send them to some isolated island and you have Aussies.

Send some British colonisers to North America and absolutely distort the accent to a drawl and you have Yanks.

Laugh5

Coon is not only a name for a locally produced Australian cheese but it's definitely a derogatory word for an Aboriginal in Australia.

When I was visiting family in Canada I felt like it was a good enough substitute of the USA.

God damn those massive Dodge Ram pickups and we thought those Toyota 200 series Landcruisers were big.

"Ahh was guessin streight frahm yer accent"

In Europe I was regularly mistaken for a Pom (British) when I started talking.

I mostly see it online, where Brits almost always use it instead of just "American." It's always "American" to my face IRL.

I grew up in New England and I never heard the term. All I know is that 90% of new England rednecks live in Maine. I know, because I have relatives living up there -- and we sometimes made fun of them.

Brits can call me anything they want, no one cares, and it won't change 1776.

You need to be at least 30 to know the term. Most are in Maine and New Hampshire but there are plenty in RI as well.

I am Canadian, which circa 2019 is about as close as you can get to an American who probably votes Democrat. I have never found them to twitch at the term "Yank" BUT. . . I have not spent a lot of time in the deep south. If you are south of the Mason-Dixon, then holster the term.

"Ruth Schell claims that the phrase is used predominantly in Rhode Island by immigrant minority groups to describe a rural person "of stubborn, old-fashioned, frugal, English-speaking Yankee stock, of good standing in the rural community, but usually possessing minimal formal education and little desire to augment it."

Swamp Yankees themselves react to the term with slight disapproval or indifference ... The term is unfavorably received when used by a city dweller with the intention of ridiculing a country resident; however, when one country resident refers to another as a swamp Yankee, no offense is taken, and it is treated as good-natured jest ... [Swamp Yankees] were not among the religious and ambitious Pilgrims who had sailed to America on the Mayflower; but rather they were more often among the undesirables who had left England as the result of some form of misconduct and who retreated to the swamps when they arrived here.[1]"

This is a 100% straight up definition of my grandfather.

And Hawaiian people need to remember they would be Japanese if it wasn't for Pearl Harbour!

This is where I got the 'racist' video from. I'd never seen it before. I found it quite shocking.

Go to 12:10 in this video:

We talk a lot about free speech. And you 'Yanks' have that, don't you?

But I get it, it's not really polite conversation. We're just throwing out an idea and an ideal here.

Not even I am going to introduce my new African girlfriend at that dinner party I've been waiting so long to get invited to, as 'my nigger'.

Might be funny though...

At least she's not a Yank!

..............

But I love my boy Kona - he's done more to advance race relations on his lawn than any other island dweller in history. His thinly veiled hate at the invaders that he mocks by over-charging them or getting them to mow his lawn is palpable. We all know who rules the North Island there!

He doesn't go quite as far as Atlanta Man with letting us all know his love for inter-racial activities, but still, lock up your daughters, white man.

If my little porcelain doll of a daughter brought big hulking Kona back to the BBQ one day and said: "Daddy, we're getting married!", I would just say "Welcome, son!".

It's a complex situation!

Actually, I think Kona might be a good lad to have around. At least he's got a bit of a sense of humour about it all. Or so we'll see after this post.

Aloha!

So the traditional form of address of "Snow Mexican" for your countrymen is not looked upon favour, I take it?
