Switzerland, Austria, and parts of northern Italy. I took German for 4 years in high school, did an exchange program there and was pretty close to fluent but haven't bothered to keep it up. Partially due to the fact that my personal interest has shifted to other parts of the world (sped along by the "cultural enrichment" of Germany) but also because just about everyone you're likely to interact with as a foreigner in any of the German-speaking countries speaks English. Learned Mandarin in the military and have enough on my plate language-wise between keeping that up and trying to learn Spanish.
