-3 man tent
-sleeping bag
-foam sleeping mat
-flashlight
-water bottle
-sandals
-hooded sweatshirt for sleeping
All easily available at walmart, target, other sporting or outdoor store.

Summers can be up to 110F in Arizona, and down to 20F in the Rockies at night.

I have taken multiple camping road trips where the reason behind the camping was not necessarily a retreat to nature, but to save on lodging costs. After a few stops I no longer rolled up my tent properly, just folded it up and stuffed it in the trunk. Ate cold food out of a cooler as you are doing too.

Take the U.S. Routes and State Routes where time allows, as opposed to the Interstate.

Agreed. This is great advice. Interstates are boring and only good when time is short.

There is a good stretch of Route 66 not far from Las Vegas in northern Arizona.

Which reminds me, just outside of LV, the “Valley of Fire” Nevada State Park is highly recommended.

One day of camping? Change of underpants, change of socks, a light source, a mat, a poncho, and a sleeping bag.

That’s it

Unsure if you have them in the US or if you call them something else.

One of these things -

They come with a basic 2-3 inch foam mattress inside. You can also leave your sleeping bag in it when rolling it up. I've had my best's night sleep ever in these - pitch black, warm when cold, cool when warm, stops wind, and will stay dry even in a heaviest downpour and you can stay cool with all the vents open on a hot night.

I don't think you need cookers or much else really.

If this question was on an Australian forum, the almost universal answer would be "A swag". I agree. Tent/mattress/sleeping bag/pillow all roll up together. Set up/pack up in seconds and throw it on the back seat of the car.

Nothing else needed, but if you would like to sit by a campfire, then add a cheap folding chair and a cigarette lighter. Assuming you are sleeping next to your car then the car's lights and a mobile phone are adequate light sources for an overnight stop.

Someone mentioned groundsheets/tarps under tents. One key point, ensure that they DO NOT stick out beyond the perimeter of the tent body else rain will collect on the stuck out tarp edges, get in through the tent wall and cause a flood inside. Years ago a guy I knew caught hypothermia this way after a heavy rain one night, luckily we were car camping and could just toss him in a vehicle and crank up the heat.

Also for showers, most car camping sites should have facilities, though you'll have to bring your own towels, soap, flip flops etc. If you're going to freebie camp or something though, you can actually give yourself a proper shower with only one bucket of water and a cup/mug. Pour 2-3 cups on yourself to wet up, lather, and use the remainder (probably won't even need it all) to rinse. For a hot shower, just boil up a pot or two of water (goes fast on gas stoves) and dilute the temperature with cold water.
