Race on job applications
I've had some hard times lately, messed up my back in the early summer had to quit my job got hooked on pills again went to rehab, physical therapy (TMI) now I'm back on track... Anyways I'm applying for manager positions at stores as my money is running low (I have experience years ago...)

For race... White, hispanic (Italian/Sicilian descent, quarter Anglo ethnically I am culturally an extremely white American though as I'm 2 generations removed) or prefer not to disclose?

(Haven't posted as I'm extremely focused on staying off the pills with AA 1-2 times daily and constant excercise)

RE: Race on job applications
You can say white or hispanic. I think how well you come off in the interviews and so long as your past references check out, you should be fine. Good luck, sorry about your back.

Whatever you do, do not mention AA or your addiction to pills/liquor or anything else in any of these interviews or while at work.

RE: Race on job applications
I've always thought it was strange that they ask us for our race and gender on job applications, but then say their company doesn't discriminate based on race or gender. If they didn't, they wouldn't ask about it in the first place. Seems like a way to stick it to whitey, and hire based on someone's color instead of merit. They've got to get those diversity hires to please the bureaucrats.

Hope everything works out, and glad you're doing better now. Being addicted to booze, pills or whatever is no fun. Also, smaller companies usually don't ask about nonsense like race on their applications.

I think it's for statistical purposes to get gov contracts and to defend against lawsuits but god knows what they do with it.

You can always select other and claim to be half chosen (a not so tiny number of Israelis have zero distinguishing features from euro goys)

As a European it totally creeps me out. Nobody would ever ask you for race or gender on a job application form in Europe...

They do in the UK.

Say you are hispanic or black if you can get away with it.

Why? Blacks/Latinos of comparable skills get fewer callbacks than equally qualified Whites, at least in the US. He'd be shooting himself in the foot to do that.

RE: Race on job applications
That's not actually true, and statistically the most likely person to get a callback is a white female.

Companies in the US that do business with the federal government (most large corporations) need to comply with diversity quotas. The groups that count for diversity quotes are racial minority (any one of the categories you see listed on a form), women, and honorably discharged military veterans. Being in any one of those categories gives you a strong advantage especially if you have a WASPy name but have brown eyes and can come up with some story about having hispanic heritage.

Nope - only when you have a ghetto name. John Washington who grew up in Compton and has a good education will get preferance over the oppressive class.

And even that is rather an older study they did, but picking Jamal over John did not do any favors.

Companies have to comply with a shit-ton of quotas and a black woman is going to have the highest ratio in the US - if she fits the minimum criteria.

Can you provide a link to the study you're referencing?

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/black-names...me-burden/

You can probably find the studies.

Quote:The other, however, suggests a black-sounding name remains an impediment to getting a job. After responding to 1,300 classified ads with dummy resumes, the authors found black-sounding names were 50 percent less likely to get a callback than white-sounding names with comparable resumes.

Even despite all the attempts of being anti-racist - it is common sense to not pick names that are popular in the ghettos or low-income areas. Even if you want to stay true to your roots going into African origins - why not pick unique names that have zero association with a low-class demographic? As a White couple you are not doing your son or daughter any favors naming them Earlene, Billy-Bob, Tammy-Lynn or Dakota either.
