There are good deals to be found here with regards to dining out but 90% of the restaurants are cruddy overpriced tourist traps. Madrid though not possessing as much touristy eye candy has the better vibes IMO as there are likely more worthwhile places to visit in Spain at a cheaper cost with as much personality.

Where do you recommend in Spain that is cheaper with as much personality?

All the places I've never been off the touristy path, lol. I was suckered into Barcelona by my older sister who was disappointed by it also but the other places are apparently Valencia, Sevilla, Granada, San Sebastien, Madrid, and Malaga..perhaps Alicante. It's still a city with a lot of worthy sights, but I just didn't feel comfortable there.

Speaking of which, let me add another city to the underrated list:

Vienna - The main touristy area can be quite annoying but it's a city with a lot going on in terms of food, nightlife, and culture. The best places to eat in Vienna is the Naschmarket (outdoor market) as there are fresh food stands scattered all throughout a long stretch not too far off from the supposed China town. Also don't forget the wineries & breweries 15-20 mins outside the city accessible by tram. Nightlife is scattered throughout three different neighborhoods accessible by metro as the subway system runs 24 hours on weekends now (as of 2011 I believe) eradicating the need for expensive cab rides & bad logistics when partying. Lot of these places also have 24 hour lo mein and Asian street food stands if you need to grab a bite after drinking that are cheap and great for social interaction.

RE: Most Overrated/Underrated Place You've Been
Overrated:

Berlin. Got so much potential but... just feels devoid of any real partyness, the kind I like anyway. All the fun seems replaced with "serious art" or "serious techno" to the point it's not enjoyable. Very few hotties, too many dudes and not as friendly/communal as I thought it would be. It was cheap though and it's quite a pleasant city in parts.

Underrated:

Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. Amazing food, surprisingly friendly people, not the level of scamming I expected. People hustling hard for a dollar, but not much outright bulllshit. People want to learn and get ahead, cute and friendly girls (if conservative),the city is great too with all the cafe culture and french influence. Like!

Have you spent a bunch of time in Malaga?

Can you bust out some data on it?

Underrated: Charleston, SC

Tons of talent. Gorgeous beaches. Well organized downtown are--all the nice bars and restaurants are within walking distance. Beautiful historic city with lots to do. Semi-pro hockey and baseball teams. Inter coastal waterway is great for fishing or you can go offshore. Award-winning golf courses. Incredible cuisine. Awesome place...

The Omni Hotel at Charleston Place. Biiiiiig fuckin' ballin'. Perfect location. Walking distance to all the nightlife downtown. Beautiful hotel. Check out the Club One Bedroom and Presidential Suites.

What are the best bars, clubs, restaurants?

Dude, there are so many places--it depends on what you're looking for. Older, more affluent crowd? College chicks? Dance club?
The College of Charleston is well-known in the south for having a high girl:guy ratio. When I was there, it was 3:1. Slayed the pussy. A lot of people will tell you that the ratio isn't as cool as it sounds because right down the road is The Citadel (military college) which used to be all male and still has a high male:female ratio, but that's not the case because they have curfews and liberty restrictions.
Also, the amount of tourists can't be over-emphasized. Cruise ships port there sometimes and it's a huge tourist attraction. All the people that come there for the historical sites and all the people that come there for the beaches, all end up downtown partying and bar hopping, after having dinner at some of the best restaurants in the southeast. The happening places are too numerous to list, but the good thing is everything is centrally located and you can walk from place to place following the crowd. Usually pretty easy to spot places that are going off because most of the places have big bay windows facing the street. Just go to the downtown market area (the same street The Omni is on) and cruise both sides. People are everywhere, especially in the summer.
Some of the best places:
Tommy Condon's (Irish Pub)
Wild Wing Cafe (Buffalo wings, cool bar, live music)
Magnolias (Fine Dining)
Cypress
Tsunami (Sushi Bar)
The Brick (College Bar)
AC's Bar and Grill
Squeeze Martini Lounge
Torch Velvet Lounge
King Street Grille
Market Street Saloon
Mad River Bar and Grille
Big John's (Famous Dive Bar)
Henry's (Older, Classy Crowd)

It's a really incredible city. The summer nights are off the hook. If you're ever down for a trip, hit me up. I love going back there. It's a blast.

**That's really just scratching the surface, because if you don't want to go downtown, there are always the beaches, which is an entirely different gaming scenario. Mt. Pleasant, Isle of Palms, Folly Beach--all of these places are packed with pussy.**

Most overrated: Medellin, Colombia

City is hyped up into the stratosphere but isn't anything special. Absolutely nothing to do except look at fat women statues (Botero). The girls (paisas) are the most arrogant/flaky I've met anywhere in South America.

I wrote about that few times on my blog and many people agreed with my views. It's a relatively clean city for Latin American standards if that's your thing.

Underrated: Any 2-tier city in Brazil (Belo Horizonte, Juiz de Fora, etc); 2-tier Poland (Poznan, Katowice, etc) beautiful cities with friendly people; Berlin was surprisingly nice; Croatian coast is amazing (Split, Dubrovnik) but not sure about gaming.

agree with your medellin views...for the amount of hype it gets absolutely jack shit to do there besides sit in centro commerciales all day...the REAL hotties there wont go near gringos so your left with barrio sluts who just want a free hand out coupled with flakyness. colombia is where u go when your too old/ugly/don't have a clue and cant pick up hot girls in western countries no more so your happy to be an atm machine and put up with their bullshit.

I actually travel A LOT, and spent a weekend this fall in Charleston. I was with a friend doing some business. I wish I had done more biz-NASS cuz there are TONS of good looking girls in this city. My friends laugh when I say I saw more good looking girls in C-town than NYC and LA! I'm not kidding. It's fucking unreal. Sit at the Starbucks on the Main St., right under this big hotel...can't think of the name. It's a stone's throw from College of Charleston. I counted a solid 7 or 8 coming in at a rate of about 1 every 30 seconds...for 4 hours straight. I got NO work done!

My only caveat...I did not see any older girls. I am 41, but can pass for 32-33. I hoped to see some older, more sophisticated women. All I saw was young 17, 18, 19, 20 yr. old girls. They are everywhere. So if you are a young buck, go get em! Otherwise, it might just be eye candy for you. Just go on Main St. for the bars and clubs. You'll see what you like/don't like. You can bounce from bar to bar no problemo.

The city does have a bit of that whitebred, guy wearing AF shirt, brown chinos type vibe...for the guys. Maybe girls like this boring ass shit. I don't roll like that. But I'm sure it works in C-town.

One funny thing...I was at this sushi joint on the Main St. (which turns into a dance club later...again...young young young kids!!!)...and my boy and I barged in on this table and just sat with these 3 cute college girls. They looked about 19. We are bullshitting with them and whatnot and my boy asks his girl...so which year did you have the most sex...frosh/soph/jr/or sr year? She pauses for a second and says...WAIT...do you mean high school or college? CLASSIC! Oh what I wouldn't give to be 19 again...armed with the knowledge of a 41 year old player!!! Have fun boys, especially the young guns. Make daddy proud!!!

I dare say the sushi joint was, almost certainly, "Tsunami" which I mentioned above. Were you right across from the State Port Authority Building (large concrete building with huge pillars and stairs out front, looks like a court house), caddy-corner to the market?

There are a LOT of young girls--way more than anyone would believe in a forum without having experienced it for themselves. You are almost always out outnumbered by chicks. Of course you're going to see tons of young chicks by the college. I imagine the girl:guy ratio is still stellar.

You needed a guide to take you to the older crowd. You should've hit up Henry's on Market St. Notorious for having a gang of cougars. You could have also benefitted from Tommy Condon's Irish pub and the bar inside Magnolias Restaurant or High Cotton Bar & Restaurant to rub elbows with some older southern belles. Also, just across the bridge in Mt. Pleasant, there is a place called Shem Creek. It has lots of upscale seafood restaurants which all have outdoor bars/decks on the water where shrimp boats dock and sell fresh seafood. That area is also known for having a crowd our age. A couple of my favorite places to go is Wild Wing Cafe (2 locations, one downtown on Market St next to Henry's and the other is in Mt. Pleasant near Shem Creek). Both places have an enormous bar and live music in the evenings. These places go off! Like shooting fish in a barrel.

I agree with the observation of local style. It's kind of a casual preppy look. Khaki pants or shorts and Polo shirts... Pretty laid back, but not sloppy.

It's definitely a place you have to experience. I'm in the military and when I try to explain it to my friends who have never been there, they never believe me until I take them for a visit. It never fails--jaws get dropped and dudes are flabbergasted. The amount and quality of chicks is indescribable.

Interesting.

I do want to go to Medellin, but haven't been in a rush.

I know some guys love to "daygame in malls" for weeks on end, but that sh*t isn't me.

Hell, I almost have to pay me to even set foot in a mall.

I hate malls.

interesting as I just booked a 5 week trip to Medellin. However, my approach worked really well in Bogota and the girls in Medellin are by all accounts more attractive/curvy. I'm already anticipating the closed off groups (clubs/bars) as that's basically what I experienced in Bogota. There are many ways around this though such as having a place on lock down (only possible on longer trips), ramping up social circle game, and befriending guys in clubs (read slubu's report on Medellin). The latter I did in Argentina, Peru, and Bogota getting me my best bangs along with solid business contacts. My primary goal is business and everything just flows from there.

In any case, I did appreciate your stuff on Brazil...I had planned on going this February but want to master Spanish first. Brazil in 2014 Blush

Underrated: Any 2-tier city in Brazil (Belo Horizonte, Juiz de Fora, etc); 2-tier Poland (Poznan, Katowice, etc) beautiful cities with friendly people; Berlin was surprisingly nice; Croatian coast is amazing (Split, Dubrovnik) but not sure about gaming.

interesting as I just booked a 5 week trip to Medellin.

@ El Guapo - Appreciate the advice about Brazilian & Polish cities that are great under the radar finds. I'd agree about Poznan but will learn more about BH & Juiz this upcoming May-August.

@ Shamrock - I agree with the whole business & "purposeful" intent of visiting a city for more than just tourist reasons. It gives your story more context & intrigue as your "opposition" will feel less threatened hanging out with you. From that point on, you can gradually escalate things smoothly....

I also agree about befriending guys as well. That sort of thing can work wonders in places like Brazil & Spain where people are friendly as they can help wingman or introduce you to their circle of friends including ones of the female variety.

Interesting.

I do want to go to Medellin, but haven't been in a rush.

I know some guys love to "daygame in malls" for weeks on end, but that sh*t isn't me.

Hell, I almost have to pay me to even set foot in a mall.

I hate malls.

lol..i agree...i don't understand how people want to travel to another country just to sit in malls all day to try and get sluts phone numbers...as i stated i will do it when im old and cant pull nice girls anymore and dont mind acting like a stupid puppy dog.

don't worry u will have a good time in medellin. it is a nice city. just saying the way people carry on about it u would think it had tropical beaches a 7 day a week nightlife and things to do during the day...it doesn't.

my guess is guys that go there get a little bit of attention from a girl for the first time in their lives and automatically think its the greatest city on earth.

i got fond memories back when i was among the few gringos in colombia. i was in my early 20's and pablo escobar was still a fresh corpse. colombia was dangerous

medellin is overrated no doubt but still a great place! unless you speak at least decent spanish, you'll get labeled as sex tourist

the best place to get laid in colombia is cali!

in general i prefer bogota over medellin any time

RE: Most Overrated/Underrated Place You've Been
Overrated: Moscow

I just recently came back from Moscow, I was for a week there while NYE.
The city just seems kind of dead, very few people walking on the street, all the people are either in the metro or in their cars driving.
I saw almost NO young people, seriously ! I didn't know the hell was going on. No teenagers too. Most of the young people (like in their 20s) were male immigrants from ex-USSR countries like Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan.
The metro was filled with thousands of people but no HBs, no females , nothing. Just old people.
It was the first city I've ever experienced with a so little amount , actually practically no amount, of young people.

Nightlife is weird too. Half the clubs you'd find on the internet didn't exist anymore or were closed. The city is huge, so there's no special street or place were the nightlife is concetrated, so you'd have to know really well were to go.

Even if you'd find some place, the bumpers weren't too friendly to let you in, even if you'd have female companionship with you. First you'd have to convince them why they'd let you in.

City itself with it's people were not friendly at all and quite superficial.
Food was mostly bad and too expensive, no places where you could grab some fast made food but all just restaurants with bad service (sit in a restaurant for 1h and all the waiters ignore you , even if you call them? Welcome to Moscow!) and high prices.

Weirdest shit ever was the red square few hours before NYE.
The were thousands of people, but not one fucking russian.
All of them were the above mentioned ex-USSR immigrants, all looked the same, just copied&pasted a gazzilion times all around you, in the heart of russia at the red square. It was really creepy actually because it seemed unreal.

Maybe I just was in the wrong time in Moscow, but it really dissappointed me anyway.
I mean it's cool to visit a place to see what it's like, sure, but I wouldn't visit Moscow again.

Most of the middle class and above Muscovites are out of town during this time. They return around today. But overall, you're right - the city sucks, nightlife is hostile, and people are unfriendly. Definitely better in the summer though, but that's only 2 months.

This is not a city you can just stroll into and everything just falls on your lap. This is big boys league.
What nightlife places did you check out? THere are a couple of places with concentrated nightlife.
NYE everyone will be with their families. Summer is also a bad time to go. March - May and Sep - Nov are the best times.
Yes there streets are empty by night and yes the food is shit however the city/metro/malls are heaving with young beautiful women so I cannot agree with you at all there.

Yeah, it's easy to get laid there (I banged 3 girls in 8 nights). But it almost didn't even feel worth it, putting up with all of the hassles and getting ripped off left and right.

Even though it's an ancient post, thought I'd add in that Bali is known as the capital city of Perth.

Agreed on the restaurant observations. Russian waiting staff come in two distinct types, equally infuriating.

The Ignorer's.
These are the lesser of the two evils. Try as you might,as soon as they seat you they disappear, often never to return. What they will often do is seat you then expect you to order immediately, before you are even sitting comfortably. You are then left with a difficult decision, make a rushed decision and order something because you are being pressured to do so or ask them to come back in ten minutes when you have looked at the menu knowing that the chances of them returning are slim to none.

The Hoverer's
I find these types even more infuriating at times. The buggers never leave your side and seem to make it their goal to take away your plate and glasses as soon as physically possible. The fuckers can ruin a relaxed meal by hovering and watching you as you drink your drink ready to pounce as soon as the glass hits the table. They actually begin moving in for the swoop manoeuvre before you begin lowering the glass or fork from your lips. Often they will try to take plates with food still on them or half full glasses, they can't help themselves. I have had to wrestle half finished plates of chicken po-Kievski out of more then one waitresses hand.

As a complete city overall though, chicks can be tough to crack for visitors and the Catalan pride gets on my nerves.

Have you spent a bunch of time in Malaga?

Can you bust out some data on it?

G, Malaga is full of brits, that side of spain all the way up to Benidorm (near Alicante) is littered with british ex pats who own swathes of real estate and villas. Alicante was really vibrant when I visited 2 years back, lots of cute spanish chicks but there were also various gangs of Brits who did their best to cockblock and generally give the spanish there a denigrated view of anyone speaking english.

There's about a million brits living in spain, they are generally in Andalucia, Valencia and Murcia provinces. It's a shame because those provinces have some of the finest spanish cities and prettiest spanish girls.

I should add knowing Spanish in these areas can sometimes be a disadvantage due to the Brits who have no spanish skills using 'ola' and shit in patronising ways. Just asking 'how good is your english' works well.
