Information Notice of upcoming forum software changes
For the past twelve years, this forum has been running MYBB software. Unfortunately, the development of it has stalled and so the process to upgrade the software has been exceedingly difficult, especially since the forum has 1.3 million posts (it had 2 million before I deleted the game and travel subforums). Myself and two other IT professionals have been trying to crack it but the software is too flawed. I'm sure you notice a lot of lag when trying to make posts in some threads---that's because the size of the posts table is so huge.

Even if I can get the upgrade to work, I don't have confidence in MYBB in the future in case another upgrade must be made, so I'm looking to other forum software such as Xenforo, which has active development.

If we move software, that leaves two options:

1. Migrate over the users and the existing posts.

2. Migrate only the users and start the forum from scratch with 0 posts while maintaining a public archive of existing posts (e.g. rooshvforum.com/archive). Nothing would be permanently deleted.

If migrating old posts is easy and does not encumber the new forum with slow loading, I will try it, but since the forum has changed so much in the past year, and so many senior members have left (or got banned), starting fresh does appeal to me. I also like the idea of having a lightning fast forum that doesn't already have a database several gigabytes in size. But a cost of that is we would lose our rep points, among other indicators of seniority.

I'm leaning towards trying option 1 first. Either way, something has to be done in the next month. Feel free to share your thoughts.

A fresh start sounds nice. I would like just one feature added if possible: dark mode.

RE: Notice of upcoming forum software changes
Are you going to let all of the banned members come back for a second chance if you go for a full clean slate and a brand new forum from scratch?

No. Usernames that are banned will not be able to return, assuming I can migrate the usernames successfully.

If I can't migrate the usernames, you will be given a head start to register your existing username on the new board.

My only request is that the forum retains its 1990's aesthetic.

If things are at that point, I think starting fresh is a good idea.

Many of the reps look like people got for political posts, and thus have little relevance now given the change in your message.

The migration of the old posts to a new forum software will most likely not work or would be too time-consuming.

But maybe the post counts can be transferred to the new forum, so that the reputation level is maintained.

RE: Notice of upcoming forum software changes
To destroy all of the compendium of knowledge on this forum would be a real tragedy. It's something which has been built up by truly unique men on a truly unique platform. There is nothing like this forum anywhere in the world, which is a tribute to the men who participate in the discourse and more importantly a tribute to you, Roosh, and what you have built here. Perhaps there are some posts which are not consistent with the new direction of the forum, but there are many more conversations without which the direction of the forum would not be possible.

I'm looking forward to being back on a level footing with the rooks and having to lecture them like an old man.

RE: Notice of upcoming forum software changes
Roosh, is there a demo of your site using XenForo software? According to XenForo:
Quote:Creating a XenForo demo will give you a temporary, private installation of XenForo and our official add-ons. This will allow you to access the full control panel to see exactly what features and options XenForo can offer you.

Your demo will only be accessible for 3 days. A new demo can be created at any time.

This will allow everybody to give you feedback, ideas, etc. Just a thought.

Edit.
Never mind. Found some demo examples with username/password that you can use to explore XenForo software.

The forum is too much of a historical "primary" record of the events of our time, too much info not to not migrate over. Look at the virus threads for example....

Honestly if its just wiped clean from the internet, its exactly what the powers would would like anyway. Don't do their work for them, by your own hand.

It'd be a travesty.

If you want a better idea of the 'look and feel' of a live, real world XenForo forum then check out some sites that use it here:
https://trends.builtwith.com/websitelist/XenForo

https://www.blackhatworld dot com is another site that uses xenforo.

Edit: Also from that list - the Canadian based 'mytractorforum dot com' site is particularly excellent.

RE: Notice of upcoming forum software changes
Since posts will only be archived it would be best to start from scratch in my opinion. A fresh start is always a good thing and maybe we can include new features that would improve upon things.

Sorry my reading comprehension is retarded and I didn't see there would be an archive. Yes option two sounds good.

Personally I prefer the idea of bringing everything across. Sometimes, coming by an old thread and being able to revive it for new information related to something old is beneficial.

Also, I second the dark theme.

I'd try to choose a system that has an active development and capable of running massive forums like this one, and one capable of importing all threads and users optimally. It would be great if the new forum could be searchable with all old threads/posts. Voted for new software and total import.

Both options have their upsides. It's a tough choice.

Again, all existing posts would be archived in the case of a fresh start option. It would be located at a URL like rooshvforum.com/archive.

I have voted for the migrating of existing posts, but I am of the opinion that on my end, MyBB is fine. It can be a bit slow sometimes, but it never crossed my mind to really think about the fact it takes 10-20 seconds to post something. I'm used to bad technology though

RE: Notice of upcoming forum software changes
I think the forum will be in danger of losing it`s "soul" or essence if we go for the second option. It`s important to maintain some of the old and to have some continuity. If Wimbledon all of a sudden changed to hard-courts for practical reasons, and played best out of 3 sets instead of 5, it would ruin the whole legacy of the tournament and people would lose interest. Maybe a poor analogy, but the forum legacy is based to some extent on both the layout and senior members/rep points. (Not that I`m one of them, but I realize the value.)

We will stomp to the top with the wind in our teeth.

As roosh said a bunch have been banned, others left, and large portions of content deleted.

Clean sweep i say. These older members post the same things day in, day out.

Has anyone seen a decent looking xenforo template? I haven’t found one that’s better than the current RVF one yet.
