I don't think it was a matter of character-- just simply Pence being a part of the swamp. He was mild-mannered and never spoke ill of Trump (at least publicly), but he definitely wasn't the man that was gonna step up when times got tough.

DJT thought they were going to like him/grow to like him (especially because he had the results). Unfortunately, they were never his allies and wanted him gone from day one and did everything possible to sabotage his presidency.

It doesn't give specifics, but from what I understand, Republican groups are now, in several states such as Wisconsin, requesting copies of the voter registration databases at least monthly so they can spot dubious actions like this article highlights.

There are more ways to spot a Judas than character. The biggest tells being where they get their money from, and who their friends are.
