4 Reasons Why Lifting In Gyms Is A Bad Idea

For nearly two decades of my life, I would go to the gym two or three times a week. While I never had huge muscles, my body was athletic and toned. Women would compliment it. I want to claim that I went to the gym to be “healthy,” but my true intention was to be attractive to the opposite sex for the purpose of fornication. When I repented of my sins before God and no longer sought fornication, I decided not to go to the gym anymore. As an Orthodox Christian, working out in a gym today would be exceedingly dangerous to me for the following four reasons.

1. The music is filthy

male-rapper-music-car-1024x683.jpg

The vehemently secular music that all gyms play is painful to my hymn-loving ears. I don’t want to hear songs about sex, seduction, getting rich, dancing all night in the club, driving expensive cars, and becoming a big boss. Thankfully, I can hardly understand the “English” being sung in most modern songs, especially hip hop, but even then, the Satanically-engineered melody will find a way to worm its way into my brain and remain there for at least a day, distracting my spiritual life with the potential to insert sinful and pornographic ideas.

I strive to listen to no secular music at all, whether modern or oldies, because of how it corrupts my nous (spiritual eyes of the soul). One of the reasons I like shopping at Walmart is because they are one of the only supermarkets I know that don’t usually play music.

2. The women are almost naked

woman-mannequin-1024x683.jpg

There seems to be a competition among gym-going women to see who can display the most skin without technically being naked according to local ordinances. The arrival of “sports bras,” which are still bras (just because you put the word sports in front of them and remove the lace doesn’t mean they should be displayed publicly), confirmed to me that the gym has become like an antechamber to the brothel bedroom. It’s too natural a progression for people who are sweating in little clothing to become enraptured with carnal lust.

“Lust has no less power than anger. It’s cunning as a snake and able to hide and mask itself. Therefore, the Apostle Paul counsels us to flee from sexual immorality (cf. 1 Cor. 6:18). Do you hear? Don’t even fight with it—but flee from it! Flee temptation, from the source of allurement, from dirty thoughts and even the potential opportunity to be seduced; because the enemy is too dangerous, strong, and cunning.” —A Man Who Indulges His Passions Brings Ruin to Those Around Him

I like to think that I can maintain custody of my eye, but inside the gym, half-naked women cavort all around me, and then enter into compromising positions on their yoga mats which immediately sends my mind into the gutter without conscious effort. Yes, I am admitting that I’m too weak to not glance at these women in bras with gigantic bulbous rear-ends when they bend right in front of me. Before I turned to Christ, I actually saw this as a benefit of any gym, for why not be sexually entertained by women to lustfully prepare for an act of fornication? But now, I run away from it.

3. There are too many mirrors

male-gym-mirror-1024x797.jpg

I never got to the point where my muscles were impressive, but nonetheless I loved looking at my athletic body in the gym mirrors. I wouldn’t go so far as flex or take selfies of myself, but I would puff out my chest and check out a profile of my body that incorporated my long masculine beard. I’d wonder if I achieved a good-enough pump where the vein in my bicep would remain popped out so that I could later wear an extra-medium v-neck before going to the nightclub for my satanic liturgy.

Since all gyms coat the walls in mirrors, my time in them exercised my pride as much as my body. I came to believe that I have achieved a physical state that was admirable, and that I was better than all the fat people who didn’t go to the gym, including the puny men I would out-compete for sexual favors at the midnight hour. My bulging vein (only in my right arm, not my left) was proof to women that I was a superior male.

The mirrors were my teachers. Over many years, they taught me that my look is the most important part of me, that I had to cherish it if I wanted to continue receiving sexual benefits, and I could maybe consider getting botox injections when I became older to still be sexually attractive to young European women. It encouraged me to focus exclusively on the material. These days, I don’t look in mirrors much and don’t fuss over my appearance. Worldly women don’t look at me either, which I am grateful for, because I know I am only one temptation away from falling back into the mud.

4. Desire to get bigger and bigger muscles for no practical reason

woman-gym-muscle-1024x678.jpg

You’re never the biggest guy at the gym. There’s always someone who lifts more than you, or who has a better steroid supplier than you, so you will constantly aim to compare yourself to other men to subliminally attract the half-naked women that aggregate around the butt machines. Your body is fine as it is, you’re healthy, but pride ignites within you to be even bigger and stronger, not to lift heavy things outside of the gym, but solely to lift heavier things within the construct of the gym itself to make you think that your body, given to you by God, is an achievement of your own. This temptation makes you a slave to the gym, and begins to cross over into real life as you develop a neurotic obsession with eating the right foods in the right amount. Instead of working out to be fit, you consider waking up in the middle of the night to gulp down a protein shake or eat a chicken breast just to look good in the gym mirror.

Conclusion

Does all this mean I’m anti-fitness? Certainly not. In the neighborhood playground I do callisthenic training a couple of times each week, where my body weight is used as resistance instead of metal plates. I haven’t been inside a gym in three years, and my muscles are certainly weaker, but I’m still alive and able to serve my daily duties before God, which mostly involve reading, writing, praying, and baking. I don’t need engorged muscles for those activities.

For me to go into a gym today, I would need to cover my eyes and ears to not fall back into the world of the material. Every man should ask himself why he wants to go to the gym and get big. Is it to achieve more from the world or to achieve a healthy physical state that optimizes his worship of God? For the role God has given me, where I use my mind more than my body, my modest workouts in the playground are good enough. For most men, push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, and bodyweight squats will be all they need to stay fit and slim into old age.

Thankfully in my area, thanks to the more rural culture, the music tends to be pretty boring (better than dirty) and even a bare midriff is rare.

The mirrors are well...Those are actually important if you're doing heavier lifts because you need to be able to observe your own form and make sure you're not doing anything that is going to injure yourself.

As far as getting bigger muscles my reasons are fairly practical. I've got a family and being physically capable is a big part of taking care of them. One of those specific responsbilities that comes with the vocation of fatherhood is the ability to decisively handle any threat against those under your charge.

Would roosh consider a homegym a better alternative? I enjoy the piece of my home gym where i can control the music i listen to, woman not being there is definitely a plus and conaidering the muscle you dont compare yourself with other men in the gym so there is less inclination for being tempted for using "suplements" that will damage your overall health and psychology.

I bought a home gym almost 4 years ago. The globo gym I went to shut down and the next closest location was about a 20 minute drive. The stress of this drive, trying to get to the gym and work my busy life was cutting into my sleep schedule.

After buying the home gym I have never gone back to the globo gym. I don't miss it at all. All I have is a half squat rack and a Olympic bench. I am in better shape, get more sleep, feel better, and I am stronger in a more real world way that before.

I get outside in different temps to run sprints and do jumping drills. I am able to squat correctly without some buffoon trying to tell me what I am doing wrong and now my lower back pain is almost completely gone. I don't have to see some 25 year old roided out guy act like he is the kind alpha and get in my road when I am trying to grow functional strength. I don't have women hogging the equipment and then leaving every dumbbell from 25 lbs. and down laying around when they are done. I don't have random people wasting my time with meaningless conversation. I don't feel pressure to compare myself to other men and how much they lift. I don't have to deal with traffic, the nearly hour out of my day just to get to the gym, and the crazies in the parking lot and on the road.

I have a thread on the Knees Over Toes Guy and it really has changed both my life and how I train and it was a great blessing to stumble upon it. It probably isn't for everyone but if not for the home gym I would have never discovered it in researching how to get more out of my home gym.

In my move to remove the occasion from sin from my life, I built a home gym in my basement, so I could still remain physically fit but avoid the temptations of the gym. I haven't been to a outside gym in around 6 months, but I was stuck in the city last weekend, and I needed to burn a couple of hours, so I decided to drop into the gym.

It blew me away on how much it has become the new "nightclub" or den of sin and debauchery. Women were wearing sports bras, ultra tight leggings, and had makeup plastered over their face. In between doing a few squats (where they purposely stuck out their butt as far as they could), they spent their time dancing, fliting, and laughing. Men were wearing muscle shirts and tight shorts, and they were trying to hit on the women. The smaller, beta men were grouped together, and the larger alpha men had all the female attention. Salacious rap music was blaring in the background. On top of all that degeneracy, I saw at least 2 different women that were actively trying to be men, one that had large misshapen back and arm muscles, but still had a huge bulbous butt like a black woman (she's wasn't black). The other one was a small woman that obviously had surgery to remove her breasts, but was comically undersized. There were also zoomer men that were wearing ridiculously flamboyant clothes, obviously because they were taught that wearing homosexual clothing was "cool." They were making crude sexual jokes, including fake moaning. In the 2 hours I was there, I would say this group spent 10% of their time working out, and the other 90% of the time socializing.

A good Christian man would need to be a saint to avoid the temptations of a modern gym. As the faith teaches us to remove ourselves from occasions of sin, it is a moral imperative that every Christian man find somewhere else to workout. If you have the money or space, I would recommend a home gym. If you don't, then bodyweight calisthenics is sufficient.

I got into the gym thing pretty heavy in my early twenties, ballooned from a skinny 6'2'' ~170lbs to ~220lbs. It became an addiction for me. Luckily I never fell into steroids but I was considering it at one point. With a new family and as a new Christian, I've lost most of my desire as I see it for the vain pursuit it was. I still lift a couple times a week, to maintain my size, but I've stopped obsessing over it. As with almost anything, it can become an addiction, its rooted in vanity for the vast majority.

The point about gymcel women dressing like prostitutes is undeniable. I've noticed yoga pants are now designed to accentuate the entire shape of their behind, including the crack. It's all done deliberately to ensure that men are constantly plugged into degeneracy, even as they try to improve themselves in some way.

One thing I'd point out: A lot of these issues depend on which gym you're attending, and there's regional factors as well.

The more "normie" friendly a gym is the more you see the issues with the women and hanging out. The best gyms are going to be more dirty, hole in the wall places where the customer base consists mostly of dudes. Ones like that where most of your audience is based males, and it's small enough that you get to know the regulars, can be a great place and a good place to meet people.

Another alternative is join a boxing gym. You'll stay in shape, learn skills that are an essential male responsibility, and hang around groups that are for the most part hard working, blue collar types of people. Wokies don't really like things that involve discomfort or hard work and an actual combat gym has both in spades.

For me it's a relatively simple proposition. Part of it is a military mindset where I view being physically capable as being an important part of leadership (because most people need to be in order to inspire confidence), and I also have a goal that I can quickly flatten anyone who tries to harm those who I am responsible for.

Remember the model of feudalism. Part of the contract involved in a traditional, Christian hierarchy is that those on top of the hierarchy are responsible for the defense and protection of those below. You need to do that to the best of your ability and if you don't have a way to do that outside of the gym, then you know what to do. You don't need to go to some crappy normie gym in order to do that.

I very much agree. Also, most of the people I see at gyms are wasting their time. Some of the dead giveaways are over accessorization, for instance, you can spot a newbie, by how they look. Gym gloves are always a strong indicator. Designer clothes, gloves, shoes, water bottles, iTunes soundtrack...they probably spent hours researching and purchasing said items while they could have been educating themselves on things like proper form, diet, rest periods, the actual exercises, etc. By the way, none of these things are necessary.

These perfectly accessorized individuals are doing all the wrong things. They look lost, act as though they're not, and have no clue what they're doing. Also, it's very common to see them with a personal trainer in tow, who is, also, wasting their time. Sorry to say, but these people are uniformly females. You see them at first, with that Katy Perry "go girl" look in their eye, all determined, but, they've fallen for every consumer gimmick in the book and usually quit within a week or two. All that expensive gear goes into a corner of some closet and rarely sees the light of day. Hundreds of dollars relegated to "I just can't make it to the gym today, I'll go tomorrow, but I'm strong and fierce", and tomorrow just keeps turning to another tomorrow.

Another thing I notice too is the constant "get ripped quick" gimmicks and techniques. X-Gear Extreme!! Lose 40 lbs in 3 hours and get ripped while at it, plus, made with recycled plant-based ingredients guaranteed to save the Earth from extinction. Good grief. You see these morons balancing on one foot on a half-inflated exercise ball doing curls with 10 lbs weights. I see right through it. Because all these wacko gimmicks do is make you forget you're actually exercising. It works because you're balancing on a ball, spinning plates, swallowing a sword, and lifting a weight, but only for so long, as in maybe the couple of times you do it. Because this may trick the mind the body still knows it's being stressed. After a couple of Spin-boxercise-resistance-pro sessions, Miss Perry-Bad Ass is back to watching tic tok having given up entirely.

January is always a sh*t month for the gym. Always. Gyms across the country swell with scores of "determined" people looking to really make a change this time. Three weeks into the month and the place empties out. By early February nobody is there, but, the gyms keep charging them for the rest of the year. Whereas for the consistent gym-goer January is terrible, it's a boom for the Gym owners. I can't blame them.

And then there's the latest in fitness technology. This is really creepy. Don't get me wrong, music is important and can really help with your workouts, but, there are limits to technology. Today, we have the climb-master, treadmill, stationary bikes ALL equipped with TVs. The propaganda machines are right there in front of their fat faces. It's straight out of Walle. Fair enough, at least these people are doing something, but, while they may be exerting themselves vs. eating fast food, they're consuming fast food for the mind. Worst still, it's all the globohomo cr*p.

Nope, I attended one of these supposedly "based" hole-in-the wall gyms. It's a fact of life that women will infiltrate and corrupt any male space unless they are specifically banned from it. Here's how it works. Men form a group or create an activity and start having fun. Women then see that men are enjoying something without them. Women infiltrate the group. Men that are not that interested in the activity join for the female attention. The men begin to arrange themselves in a hierarchy, where the few alphas compete for all of the female attention. Women begin to compete with each other for the highest alpha by dressing more and more provocative and by back-stabbing each other. The betas, who are ignored by the women, "support" the best alphas. Cliques and factions form around different alphas. The men that originally formed the group leave. Rinse and repeat. The only way out of the cycle is to workout alone.

All interesting points, and things I've thought about over the past few years of going to the gym.

1. I listen to my own music or podcasts on my headphones as I have much the same issue as Roosh. For a long time I resisted wearing headphones at the gym as I'm rather critical of the modern tendency of people to wear headphones in public nonstop, but the benefits clearly outweigh the cons here. I also find conversations in the gym extremely annoying, so it's good to filter that out as well.

2. As far as visual temptation, it varies wildly from one day to the next. Some days there are a lot of scantily clad girls, others, none at all. But even then, there usually aren't that many girls. I only work out in the free weight area, and fewer girls exercise there compared to the "easier" parts of the gym. For a while I struggled with this, but at some point I realized it was because I was letting myself ogle them. Recently I've been militant about not letting my eyes fix upon any women at the gym at all, and have had little issue. No doubt, however, that many women are going to the gym and dressing provocatively because they want to be seen. This is a very good reason not to go to the gym.

3. I've noticed the mirror issue too. I think it's odd how much time guys spend looking at themselves and flexing at the gym. It seems rather silly to me. When I'm doing exercises like squats or deadlifts though, the mirrors help me keep the correct form, as I'm intrinsically wobbly and having trouble making symmetrical movement unassisted. I'm a tall, skinny guy, so I'm not all that physically impressive to begin with, so personally I'm not too tempted to admire my physique.

4. I've been doing the Lean Gains routine for a few years now, and because I am an extreme hard gainer and haven't really adjusted my diet at all aside from drinking a protein shake after my three weekly workouts, I have not developed big muscles, nor do I care to do so. However, compound exercises seem to offer the most "bang for the buck" for time spent working out and help to keep my bones strong, muscles in decent shape, and stimulating my nervous system. The vast health benefits of compound lifts do more for me than body weight exercises: I am very lightweight and don't have much intrinsic weight resistance, making exercises like pull-ups laughably easy. But I am in complete agreement with Roosh's rationale, I feel that in many ways weightlifting is analogous with other male nerd hobbies; building huge muscles scratches the same neurological itch as leveling up your MMORPG character to level 999, or filling your room from floor to ceiling with Funko Pop toys, with the caveat that it's a genuine accomplishment. The temptation to pride, vanity, and ego is a serious one in many cases. I have the same temptation, but from different avenues than weightlifting.

For me, the biggest reason to drop the gym might be because it takes up about an hour and a half from my day that I'd otherwise be around my family, three days a week. I enjoy going on walks a lot more than going to the gym, but the fact the gym isn't "fun" and makes me uncomfortable suggests that it's worth it to make myself do it, at least for the time being.

Hey, this description is spot on. Well done.

That said, what you described above is the bane of my existence. Today, I'm like Roosh, so, I don't go to gyms. But, when I used to I was a monk. I didn't talk to anyone, I was laser-focused on my workout and that's it. At any rate, what you said above describes all institutions. Sadly, this describes places like the military. I honestly find such environments intolerable. I can't see how any other rational person wouldn't either. For instance, the whole female back-stabbing. How is that a welcomed thing? I suppose if you're a rotten person then, yeah, it's appealing. But then again, why were shows like jersey shore so popular when they're literally everything you described?

At any rate, this phenomenon exists today because of feminism and, so, it's due to very specific conditions. What can we do to stop it? It doesn't do any of us good, men especially but women too. There has to be a healthy separation between the sexes. Its making us miserable and its unnatural. Yes, I concede that this phenomenon exists and I think on their own people will want to be in coed spaces for the social aspects. Then again, such places do exist for that purpose, but they exist for that exact purpose i.e. dance halls, clubs, bars etc. Apropos a gym exists for exercise health etc. Since women insist on being there too it morphed into just another social club, which defeats the purpose entirely. There's that and there's the arbitrary intervention driven by feminist activism. feminists activists discover a male-only space and demand access. This has to stop.

I like the idea of a men's only gym, but I imagine you'd be banned.

I agree.
Getting swole, as in eating the right thing and doing uncomfortable heavy lifts is still WAY easier and less stressful than actively practicing any difficult martial art.
To be honest, getting swole was one of the most easiest things I ever did when you get the right mindset

This is definitely a slippery slope for me.

I'm in the gym 6 days per week minus Sunday. At 47 years old and having a 1 year old boy plus wanting more children, I find it necessary to stay in the best physical shape as possible so that I can be physical with them.

I will try to listen to gregorian chants or eastern orthodox chants during my workout, but it is definitely distracting when I can feel women staring at me. It's crazy sometimes to the point I have to walk a different path to avoid a girl trying ask me something.

I have found a time when the gym (Christian gym) is less busy with young women and try to give God the glory for blessing me with a healthy and strong body.

I haven't seen my family (overseas) for 9 months, so I am definitely being tested on my discipline to be honorable and faithful.

Getting more attention at 47 than 27 is a subject where I have to be very mindful of pride and ego.

Yeah--while Roosh's points are valid all of them are variable and more applicable to some gyms than others, and #1 can be mostly nullified regardless of where you go simply by bringing earphones. I haven't been to a public gym since pre-covid and purchased a home gym setup about a year ago which I love, but not everyone has the money or living space to do this. A side bonus is that a simple home gym--I have a squat rack with barbell/bench/plates, a half dozen or so kettlebells ranging from ~12-75 lbs, and a Thai bag--favors compound exercises that build functional fitness. Workout programs geared towards hypertrophy/vanity tend to require a lot of dumbbells, specialized machines, etc which tend to be expensive and take up a lot of space.

That said, I 100% agree that training martial arts 3-6x/week should be the centerpiece of a fitness regimen with strength training, muscular endurance (calisthenics etc), and cardio (running/biking/swimming/rucking) as supplements. BJJ, muay Thai, boxing, sambo, wrestling. Try and find a small, grungy gym (as opposed to some huge gym with state of the art everything) and there's a good chance it'll be all or nearly-all male. Shooting is also a martial art which men who live in an area where they can legally do so should practice at least once a month.

I never understood why people bring phones to the gym. It's the one place where one should be without it anyway, apart from being a good excuse to NOT use one or have more screen time than necessary. I hardly see many fit women in gyms anymore but if I do, I laugh because the clothing stuff is so preposterous - I find it more annoying and a cry out for attention rather than a real distraction, but yes, it is.

I prefer lifting to calisthenics but I don't blame people for liking the body weight exercises. I just think working out as you get older gets more and more boring so I think weights are a bigger bang for your buck and will do more to put on or maintain lean muscle mass.

A home gym was always the ideal setup - we are all in agreement here.
