In this day and age, does any of this seem surprising anymore?

I'm surprised that it happened in Israel.

I thought they stood against that sort of stuff in their own country.

In all Purim celebrations that I have been in there is no gay overtones. Its more like a drunken halloween celebration about a thwarted genocide. Than we eat ear shaped triangle cookies with fruit filling which are symbolic of the guy's ear who wanted to kill of the Jews at the time. He was made out of triangles I guess.

There is nothing regarding "GAY parades".
However, there is carnival, in which people dress up. This is part of the liminal time, in which you become someone else.
