That, and the guy doesn't have a legal case. He was almost certainly an at-will employee. He could have been fired for a good reason, a bad reason, or no reason at all.

Plus, as a herb, he also probably felt guilty. If the girl had said something, he would have blushed and sincerely apologized.

That guy is as blue pill as it gets. He would hate everything we stand for and consider us to be only slightly above mass murderers.

Media-wise, it is heartening to know there is some backlash emerging from latent red pill/libertarian quarters:

1. Because you are able to tweet somebody's every overheard remark doesn't mean you should. (Check out the link on "Adria" to her blog item -- it's shocking, both in that she felt she had a right to expose people's private conversation and for what I see as her bullshit justification: It's for THE CHILLLDREN! (Specifically, the girl children, who she assumes are being brought up to be emotional clones of the fragile china doll ideologue she apparently is.)

2. People will say things that you find offensive.

3. If they are not speaking into a microphone -- intending their conversation to be for public consumption -- you don't get to publish their conversation just because you happen to overhear it. The exception would be if they are planning to blow up a building, in which case you should quick-quick, ring somebody with a SWAT team or something.

4. Also, if you want to be treated as an equal, how come you demand to be infantilized? Men are sometimes gross and make jokes in bad taste. (Women I'm friends with are likewise sometimes gross and make jokes in bad taste -- but I generally don't fraternize with the politically correct.)

I've never been troubled by being in an industry where coarse jokes fly around. (In fact, I rather like it.) But if I did have a problem with it, I'd be in a different industry or I'd tell people their language was bothering me...all adult-like 'n' stuff, by moving my lips and making words come out in their direction...not by going all "Mommeeeee! They're saying baaaaad wordssss!" to conference organizers or some other designated/de facto workplace grownup.

You know what makes me sick the most? The sense of entitlement. Chicks like her want to be able to enter the work place, but then demand that everyone has to change to what THEY want so as to accommodate them. No sexual jokes, no pictures of hot chicks, no guy talk at all. Pisses me off.

That doesn't piss me off. People with entitlement complexes are a fact of life. What pisses me off is when they're allowed to get away with this attitude and harm others in the process-- when people don't even notice how insanely selfish it is.

You don't like that calendar on the wall? Shut the fuck up.
You don't like it when men act like men? Shut the fuck up.
You don't like it when a guy calls a woman a bitch even though she was being a bitch? Shut the fuck up.

I don't care how uncomfortable you are, I don't care how offended you are either, unless someone is harassing you or threatening you, SHUT YOUR CUNT MOUTH. The entire male gender should not have to change to accommodate you, and this is what I am talking about when I say that people are missing the point.

You are absolutely right on every point.

All I am saying that it's just not practical to expect that no female ever will wind up deluded and entitled. If you do much digging, you find that Adria Richards is something of a nutcase. Where she came from or how she got this way I have no idea, but crazies like her will always slip through the cracks. It's better to be prepared to deal with it by telling her in no uncertain terms, with full alpha authority, that her demands are absurd and unworkable. "Shut your cunt mouth" may even be the right turn of phrase in some cases (but not all).

I once worked for a chain of community newspapers where HR kept ratcheting up the sexual harassment rules. One of the no-no's was that there was to be no "offensive literature" in the building.

We had a female reporter who was covering a sex scandal and my running joke was that if she read her own articles while she was on company time, she'd then have to turn herself in for sexually harassing herself.

Now I wonder how far from the truth I was with that joke.

I'm not expecting a perfect world where chicks like this don't exist, but society in general seems to be pretty signed off on the idea that men must change to accommodate women. This can be changed.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again: The primary direct threat to your right to speak freely as a private citizen and an adult in a free democracy comes not from the government, but from your employer, who will fire you if some hysteric tweets about something you said in your personal capacity.

Why? Because they don't want the supposed "firestorm" such a tweet will cause.

They're cowards. And they will fire you for exercising your free speech rights as an American citizen if someone accuses you of breaking the Speech Laws on FaceBook.

Now, we can't change that either. The world is full of weak men. PlayHaven especially so.

But we can change incentives. As Milton Friedman said, we cannot expect to put good and noble people into positions of authority over us. He was speaking of the government, but his point applies equally to employers. He said we have to accept that the people with authority will continue to be be bad -- and we will only have real freedom and real progress when we change the incentives such that bad, weak people do the right thing.

Because the bad, weak people will be penalized for doing the wrong thing and rewarded for doing the right thing. They'll still be cowards motivated by fear-- but we can only have progress when we put the correct incentive structure of fear into them.

In the instant case, this means punishing, by any consumer boycott we can manage, PlayHaven, whoever the hell they are, until they re-hire this guy and give him a $5000 bonus as a shame-based cash-money apology for their own cowardice and weakness.

But this is not restricted to PlayHaven. This is going on all over.
