Basically he realized that his life had no meaning. See the issue with transgenderism is that it's not normal. Normal people don't want to be with a transgender person. It is a permanent procedure that will destroy your life. See we all have moments in our lives that we made mistakes but it doesn't haunt us because we can move from it. Imagine the mistake you make is on your body and permanent. He probably had a psychotic breakdown after he saw himself in the mirror and realized there was no turning back. When, where and to what extent the bullying may or may not have started for all members of either group is a matter of broad speculation, but the existence of severe regret among transsexuals should be easier to corroborate.

We see so much transsexualism and overt homosexuality now versus a couple of decades ago because a) it's promoted, because b) basic survival and safety got significantly easier with the advent of technology and modern living. Along the way, society-wide bullying and public shaming went out the window with pop culture promotion of opposite values and the deprecation of morals seen as obsolete and unnecessary.
