CONSENT is a weird rallying cry. It's as if a rally against theft used a banner saying SELL to suggest that people should exchange merchandise via voluntary buying and selling rather than just taking things.
Maybe in the early days of the AIDS epidemic it would have made sense for safe-sex advocates to make a big banner saying CONDOMS as a way to get people to change long-standing sexual practices. CONSENT implies that consenting to sex voluntarily, and only having sex with people who consent, is a novel idea--that until now everyone has been running around raping each other willy-nilly. Whereas the truth is more words have been written about how men can get women to consent to have sex with them, bemoaning the inability to get women (or a particular woman) to consent to have sex with them, or celebrating a woman's decision to consent to have sex with them, than in all the encyclopedias ever published. Everything from the PUA oeuvre to The Great Gatsby and Lady Chatterly's Lover.
Ladies (and white knights), we are all in favor of women consenting to sex. Mm-kay?
