The Office. End of.

Haha, yeah Layer Cake is excellent, Doctor Who isn't for me, 'Top Boy' is a great 'urban' TV show that aired recently.

EDIT: Peep Show is great too.

I think Luther in fantastic. I wish they made more episodes.

Shameless is good in a trashy king of way. (is Frank Gallagher alpha?)

No homo, but I will also admit to liking Downton Abbey.

+1 for Misfits and Inbetweeners

Also one that hasn't been mentioned, Fresh Meat
Agree with the inbetweeners, not on Misfits. I just don't understand how anyone likes it??

My favourite is Extras, it's finished now, but you can still catch it online. One of the few shows that literally puts me in tears crying, absolutely amazing!

The British comedies speak for themselves. They are pretty famous around the world - and most of the best ones are in this thread.

As for films - I think Britain has really only made two classic films - 'Withnail and I' and 'Trainspotting'.

As for dramas - I love 'Bodies' and 'Cracker'. Below is a classic example of the genius of 'Cracker' (my favourite thing ever):

And the best writer in Britain is Alan Bennett. His Talking Head monologues are brilliant. This is my favourite one:

I only like two of the older comedies in Britain. 'Blackadder' and 'Yes Minister'.

'Yes Minster' is also blessed with the finest opening credits to a show ever.

There is an excellent mini-series from '79 made by ITV called Danger UXB about guys who were defusing unexploded bombs dropped by the Germans on London during the Blitz. Very well done and extremely suspenseful at times. Netflix has it as a DVD rental (not streaming). Highly recommended.

Yeah, Yes Minister and Yes, Prime Minister were great.
Another worthwhile show starring Paul Eddington was The Good Life:

Pretty funny and unexpectedly deep, about self-sufficiency.

Also, Patrick McGoohan in The Prisoner:

Acute Angle

Woodpecker
There was a fantastic series about a nuclear cover-up called Edge of Darkness. Damn, Joanne Whalley was cute back then.

Boys From The Blackstuff was landmark drama too.

I just finished season one of Broadchurch, a show which investigates the effect a young boy's death has on a small town. The principle story revolves around the two lead detectives tracking down the murderer but the heart of the series is what happens when secrets are revealed.

The British series is excellent--do not watch the American remake Gracepoint. I only watched one episode and it sucked. It is literally a shot for shot replication of the British series except with bad acting. The weird thing is that in the remake they cast the same exact dude, the Scottish David Tennant, as the lead detective--except he has an American accent in Gracepoint. It was unnerving to watch the same guy play the same role but every other part was played by different people but with the same story as Broadchurch. Then I thought that it would be interesting to bring David Tennant back and play the same role continually in different countries each time searching for the murderer of a young boy as some sort of fucked up purgatory.

Anyway, check out Broadchurch (not Gracepoint).

Inbetweeners is great if you want to learn more about British Culture and how to run bad game. Specifically the caravan, Duke of Edinburgh, French Exchange and Thorpe Park episodes.

I found Nathan Barley hilarious. People either love it or hate it though. The episode with the bag for a hat had me in stitches.

Also +1 for Peep Show, Fresh Meat, and Inbetweeners.

Hastn't been a lot of good comedy around recently, although I did find Siblings pretty funny. Hopefully the new season of Fresh Meat will come soon.

Is this a good one? It is on my To Watch list after stumbling onto it thru Amazon.
