Nah, it's not so bad. Tempest in a teacup, basically.
There's an interview with her here:

She seems like a nice enough Southern girl who took a particular interest in the Holocaust and wanted to honor her Dad's memory:
“The Holocaust and World War II is the only thing that’s ever interested me in history,” Mitchell told TakePartLive in a video interview. “And it’s [my dad’s] favorite part of history. Whenever I graduated, [my parents] said they’d take me out of the States to go wherever I wanted. [My dad] died one year prior to that photo.”
Since the image went viral, Mitchell has dealt with “death threats” and hateful messages telling her to kill herself, but still defends her decision to post the image.
“Honestly, I don’t think I would do anything different just because I didn’t mean any harm,” she said. “And I’ve told everyone my story behind it. So that’s the only reason why I don’t regret taking it.”
I feel bad for her if anything. She is used to smiling for pics, so she smiled for this one. Should she have faked some tears or made an artificial grimace of some kind?
No big deal. What's much worse is other people's need to scrutinize and moralize about every little thing (not talking about posters here so much as all the people who felt the need to contact her with their outrage etc).
And yes, the most outrageous thing of all, as Cunnilinguist noted, is her white woman
runnels already so fully present in a teen. Terrible.
