Jokes aside, I think Lira was screwed no matter what, but he certainly was pushing the line with inflammatory language and rhetoric at times. Even to the point he would turn off people sympathetic to Russia.

That said I don't think he'll be tortured, just jailed.

A big question here is if this is a sign of desperation from Ukraine, or is it because they are feeling emboldened to make this move.....

Yesterday the Helsinki Times also wrote about Lira's arrest from the p.o.v. that it's a blow to free speech.

I actually had to do a double take in surprise that a Western mainstream media outlet actually defended free speech they don’t agree with. Almost unheard of these days.

Let me suggest the possibility of another reason why Lira was arrested again and that it has nothing to do with the current military or political situation in Ukraine, but is due to how long it's been since his first arrest.

It was almost exactly one year between his two arrests, and after the first they took his passports and put him under various restrictions, such as: he can't leave; he can't discuss his arrest; and back then he said he no longer had access to his social media accounts.

I think it's possible that the Ukrainian authorities pre-planned this time line from the beginning simply because it's common for prosecutors and courts to operate within a particular time frame for different cases, and this is a very minor case IMO, so minor that they let Lira sit out on bail and move around different hotels, as well as allowing him to continue to have access to the Internet.

Lira might look high profile because he is a unique animal in Ukraine as a right-winger vlogging in english from inside the country, as compared to other english language vloggers Patrick Lancaster, Australian, who is embedded with the Russian forces (and out of reach for Ukrainian authorities), and Sarah Ashton-Cirillo, American tranny, who is pro-Ukraine and enlisted in their military, but I don't think Lira's really that important to them and so letting it simmer for a year could just be how the prosecutors and courts dealt with their case load.

There is also some potential benefit for the SBU, or whoever, to leaving Lira alone to do his vlogging in order to see with whom he has contact.

This is getting very little attention. The Daily Beast article is the only thing that came up for me when I searched Google News and it was only from a Brave search that I found that Finish blurb.

From what I heard, his initial arrest was more or less an arraignment, and this recent one was when they picked him up to finally face the charges in court. He was extremely foolish and reckless for remaining in the country while is family was elsewhere - and for what? Ego? He's facing 8 years, maximum. Hope he does not get that.

Scott Ritter as a UN weapons inspector and US analyst was a huge whistleblower on the false Iraq WMD's narrative. He did everything he could to prevent the Iraq war. I believe he was very likely targeted and framed as a punishment for this.

He tried to set up meetings with a 16 year old in 2001, and then exposed himself and masturbated to what he believed to be a 15 year old in 2009.

How could he have been "framed"?
Exactly. If it happened once, maybe. But he was in two similar situations. With an FBI sting operation, etc it still needs more than suspicion to nail him on charges like that. They usually give several opportinties for the targeted perp to back out before moving in.

That said, I still find his professional experience and credentials very relevant and his commentary on the Ukraine situation valuable. It's a shame it's clouded by his past criminal activity, especially given the nature of the charges.

Tranny nutjob Sarah Ashton-Cirillo released a video on Twitter celebrating Lira's arrest and is expected to be called as a witness against him.

Warning: Language (front patch).

American journalist Sarah Ashton-Cirillo, who is currently serving in Ukraine's Armed Forces, said she is slated to be one of the witnesses in the criminal case against Lira. She told The Daily Beast, "This justice has been a long time coming. Obviously, when I was accused by Maria Zakharova and the Russian MFA of being complicit in Gonzalo Lira's disappearance last year, it set off a lynch mob of his supporters accusing me of murder. His arrest this week shows that Ukrainian officials don't bow to popular pressure when a factual investigation leads to the truth."

Ashton-Cirillo added, "I've already given my sworn statement to SBU about Gonzalo Lira several months ago and expect to be called as a witness in his prosecution."

No offense to you personally, but this is a very weak take with the name calling.

First off, the age of consent in literally dozens of countries is 16. You can even marrry a 16 year old in some states in America. Calling someone a "pedo" for pursuing a 16 year old is extremist language. Is it gross, inappropriate, and in poor taste? Yes, but the "pedo" label is ridiculous.

I will bet you money that the pictures they used to for this 16 and even 15 year old (also legal age in some European countries) are of prime, of age, attractive young ladies. This is something the police do all the time, and Ritter did have a huge target on his back. I find the whole concept of police "baiting" dudes on chat rooms with pictures of hot 18 year old girls posing as 16 year olds to be buffoonish and a total useless endeavor that solves nothing.

While we are on the topic of judging, we should remember that his own wife has steadfastly stuck with him throughout these ordeals. Either she is grossly naive, or perhaps she knows the real story here and has come to a reconciliation with her husband and his transgressions.

For the record, I find Ritter to be largely annoying and pontificating. He has some salient pionts but is otherwise annoying. I think there's plenty to criticize him on without smearing him because of these laughable charges.
Sorry dude... Totally disagree.

We can not use the term I said, which is Pedo weirdo.. And use the legal definition for what he is: a registered sex offender.

He had been involved with this sort of behavior multiple times. In 2001 it was a sting with a 16 year old. This was later dismissed and sealed... But a pattern developed. He has to have known that there was a target on his back, and he had to have known, IF he believed this first thing was a set up..
They would do it again.

As far as what he was convicted of... it was a 15 year old girl. 15 dude, the person repeatedly identified themselves as a 15 year old girl and he exposed himself and masturbated in front of them. It's really hard for the Deep State to just make that up. There's got to be video and messages.

It's irrelevant what his wife did in sticking by him or not. He had daughters that age.

It's 100 percent irrelevant what's allowed in Europe. By that logics, some countries in Africa and the Middle East allow Child brides.

Back to Lira...(sorry for the above digression)

Barnes and Viva went over this today. They pretty much said the same... That the initial arrest was intended to be a public trial and thennexecution... but public pressure on his early arrest was such that he was able to avoid this fate.

He was pretty brazen after the fact.

Hope he is not harmed but I am sadly skeptical of what sort of "Justice" he may get at the hands of the SBU.

I found some of Liras comments to be excellent... But as the war has gone on and post arrest I've tuned him out, frankly I've tuned the whole war out.

It's absolutely germain since people were using the term "pedo" and that is ridiculous by any standard of western Christian society. But check out the age in which people can legally marry in the US if that makes you feel better, it's 16 (and under) in many cases - and I assume that would involve sex.

Being a registered sex offender is nice, ridiculously broad term to describe anyone from a baby raper to a dude who got drunk and streaked naked through town on a dare. Like the term nazi or rapist, it's got a great impact for normies to broadbrush condemn and label someone. Unless it's directly relevant to the point at hand of his credibility as a political commmenter, it's a meaningless and banal term. Scott Ritter clearly used poor judgement, and was an idiot to fall for something like this repeatedly, but we still have no idea what kind of baiting, with what kind of picture or encouragement was used by the police.

Pardon my cynicism, but as I see our country and foreign policy utterly collapse, I have literally zero faith in the methods and voracity of the police, especially on something so stupid, wasteful, and self serving as the Ritter case.

Oh.... And I hope Gonzalo Lira is ok. I suspect he may ironically get more exercise and outdoor time than before. He was looking really hagard at the time of his arrest.

Why would you legitimize sting operations from the deep state? I have no opinion, but it seems you are playing their game of character assassination if you buy into it. He's either got good geopolitical analysis or he doesn't. All the other stuff may or may not be true, but it's a distraction.

Lira was always just an alternate voice, by the way. He didn't hurt anyone, but who did he really help?

Quite a bit. His biggest contribution was that his roundtables brought some good names up in prominence. Not that it's going to directly impact the war but hearing from people like the former CIA analysts he has had on.

"MeaningfulMan said:
Right when I start reading The Saker, the owner shuts it down.
Right when I start listening to Gonzalo Lira, he gets arrested."

Giving their names to Meaningfulman and his CIA watchers, I don't know but... And just like that, they're all going to be arrested!

By the way, G. Lira was apparently haggard before being arrested, so I can't imagine how he'll look after a few weeks in a Ukrainian jail. Probably like Golum. Meanwhile NATO is Sauron and Zelensky, Sarouman... Putin is clearly Aragorn.

Talking about G. Lira thrown into a Nazi Azov jail in Kharkov : the same day in his native Chile, the grandson of a Nazi has won the Constitutional elections. Looks like, indeed, Nazis never capitulated, as was boldly tweeted yesterday by the Western Establishment.

I don't understand why people think Lira would have been able to leave Ukraine after his first arrest. Standard operating procedure after an arrest is to make an arraignment, which involves posting bail, and for someone deemed a flight risk (such as a foreign national) the conditions of the bail are forfeiture of the accused's passport.

Makes sense he got his family out, but it was way too late for him.

State Department Pleads Fifth When Asked About American Detained in Ukraine

American YouTuber and columnist Gonzalo Lira was arrested in Ukraine at the start of May because he “publicly justified” the Russian invasion, according to a press release by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU). The statement says that Lira “has the citizenship of one of the countries of Latin America” but omits that he is also California-born U.S. citizen.

Lira is a resident of Kharkiv, Ukraine and was an outspoken critic of the nation’s President Volodymyr Zelensky. Lira has written financial columns, published in Business Insider and even here at ZeroHedge. His Twitter account is still up, and a brief look reveals that — whether you agree with him or not on all stances — his opinions are largely in line with much of the American right. The SBU claimed to have confiscated “mobile phones and a computer with evidence of illegal activity” from Lira’s apartment but no such evidence was made public.

Lira has been charged under sections 2 and 3 of Article 436-2 of Ukraine’s criminal code, which was augmented at the start of the invasion to criminalize the “distribution of materials” that justify Russia’s actions in Ukraine going back to 2014. The law specifically outlaws portraying any military dispute “financed by [the] Russian Federation” in Ukraine as an “internal civil conflict,” a law The New York Times and Wired Magazine are in violation of.

The Ukrainian government has frequently claimed that the violent conflicts in the Donbas region — which killed over 10,000 people between 2014 and 2020 — were financed and armed by the Russians. However, a former NATO official in charge of investigating arms shipments into the Donbas from 2014 to 2018 found that “there were no deliveries of weapons and military equipment from Russia” and instead that most arms were smuggled by defecting Ukrainian soldiers. This official could have been imprisoned under Article 436-2 as well.

Lira faces up to 13 years in prison if he is convicted of both charges.

Of course, American journalists are not as indignant over Lira’s arrest as they are over that of Evan Gershkovich, the WSJ reporter being detained in Russia. Federal Reserve minion Nick Timairos did not change his Twitter profile to signal “solidarity” with Lira.

Biden did not praise Lira’s “absolute courage” for speaking against the regime which he lived under nor does it appear the administration has any intent of negotiating his release, two actions it has taken on behalf of Gershkovich.

Daily Beast was the sole mainstream outlet to cover Lira and only did so to slander him.

Each of these individuals was imprisoned for speech and speech alone. Holding a principle in favor of freedom of expression would require standing up for these writers equally. Given the leverage we have over Ukraine, securing the release of Lira would not take so much as a phone call.

Stil, when asked about whether the Biden State Department was aware of Lira’s arrest and if they are working to get him freed, newly appointed spokesperson Mathew Miller said the department is aware of the matter but went no further.
