I think this is probably a standard one:

The original:

The one everyone knows:

Bonus points for being Mariah Carey before the wall.

Ministry has a brutal cover of The Rolling Stones 'Under My Thumb'.

The lyrics are red pill through and through. Very surprising that this song won a Grammy with that in mind.

"Ruby Baby" (Donald Fagen)

Donald Fagen's reimagining of the blues-based Leiber/Stoller tune "Ruby Baby", with the harmonies piled up like the layers of a Dobosh Torte, from his 1982 album The Nightfly. (The tune had originally been a hit for The Drifters in 1956.) The musical cleverness that Fagen invests in this irritatingly simple-minded tune is nothing short of breathtaking.

Elvis didn't write this, but this is an awesome cover of a song he popularized:

Classic Brit punk band covering a great Beatles song:

A little obscure one for the hardcore music nerds and/or Herb Alpert fans:
(original song was written by Bert Kaempfert)

Oh, and while I appreciate the covers of Hall & Oates and enjoy them, the thread title is Covers that were BETTER than the originals. I'd have a hard time believing that any Hall & Oates covers are better than the originals...just sayin'.

A lot of people forget that "All Along The Watchtower" was originally written by Bob Dylan. Jimi's version is infinitely better:

And I've always thought The Beatles version of "Twist and Shout" was the best. Lennon gives one of the great rock vocal performances of all time. Apparently he couldn't talk for a week after recording his version.

Always liked the Fat Boys rendition of "The Twist"

Ofcourse Wet Wet Wet also killed it with their version of "Love is all around", but maybe saying that belongs in the songs your embarassed to admit you like

As a huge Pumpkins fan, I'm not inclined to say the Bad Rabbits cover of "1979" is better than the original...but it's incredibly beautiful. Great find.

My comment is that most of the versions are very similar to the originals. Which one you like is based on which one you heard first. If you've listened to a song hundreds of time, it’s hard to like a new one as well. I think the Jimi Hendrix versions of Hey Joe and All Along the Watchtower are better than the original. Rocky Mountain Way is similar to the Joe Walsh's, but I'm much more familiar with that one. I like the original Hotel California by the Eagles Better. I like Patti Smyth "Because the Night" better because much more familiar with it. I like the Lynyrd Skynyrd version of “Simple Man” better. In fact listen “Always Somewhere” by the Scorpions which is just their stealing “Simple Man” and reworking it.
