Along with cognitive dissonance and sunk cost fallacy, another way a psychologist might describe it is related to "in-group bias"; the preferential treatment shared amongst the likeminded while at the same time ignoring or subverting out-group individuals. Virtue signaling is a great example of in-group bias at work.

Even if something is ostensibly a bad decision in the long-run, it is validated in the short-run by the in-group. Immediate rewards are a dominant factor in bad decisions. Not surprisingly, an immediate reward with longer term regret is a hallmark of Christian vice.

I'm not sure if this is a "They Live" glasses on/glasses off thing, or a comparison of the current reality over what could be possible.

A lot of the symbolism in the image on the right looks like some kind of imaginary atheist secular utopia.
That giant “green” structure on the right. Anything with the term “organic” or “health food.” A house cat. A nappy-headed hoe.
