Soccer won't catch on in the inner cities. Trust me. I watched soccer when in britain, didn't care for it. Then again I'm pretty uninterested in football, and my home team won the superbowl. And I worked at the stadium they played at for home games. But the sports you like are often decided partly by your culture, by the memories they invoke, the emotions which come through subconscious connotation which can be reinforced by early exposure, and that's NOT some "omg US propaganda" crap. It is perfect logical sense, human nature--just like how, as a kid, I went fishing a lot with my grandfather, and now I like the outdoors. Positive connotations.

Football + inner city = poor broke kids got somewhere to channel their aggression, part of ethnic culture
Basketball + inner city = poor broke kids get somewhere to somewhat channel their aggression, part of ethnic culture

Soccer's not aggressive enough. Being working class and living in an inner city, kids will end up with a deep rooted desire to fuck shit up and show off, and you can't spike a soccer ball or slam dunk one in some guy's face. You also don't see a lot of certain ethnic groups in soccer.
Furthermore, you can play American football (handegg) on an incline, good if you play in a city street. Handegg doesn't require rolling. Throwing is easier than kicking in a direction that avoids hitting some guy's car. the ball won't roll away as readily if you cock up.
Also soccer takes up space. Hell all sports take up space. Nobody wants to put in a park, when you can put up slumlord housing and walmarts. Remember, they bring in JOBS! So what we got is mostly what was there 30 years ago. Which in 20 years will be what was there 50 years ago, minus what got torn down.
This is finally ignoring that white-dominated sports don't catch on in inner cities, simply due to demographics

you forget that as part of the US educational system's gym program, we're given actually more exposure and practice with soccer than baseball, as it's less of a liability and requires less starting skill. Yet it never catches on, much to the amazement of many a gym teacher.

Worth noting that baseball gets a lot of non-school exposure. Baseball leagues are very common and popular in rural and suburban areas. It was the first sport I ever learned to play, I can't remember a time when I didn't know anything about baseball. There was a parallel football culture present, but I didn't have much contact with it until High School, where football and basketball were the high-profile spectator sports. They were the only sports that consistently got attendance from people other than parents and close friends of players on the team.

I like basketball and I think other countries are starting to take notice of US domination and are doing something about it. If you watched the Olympics, teams such as Russia, Spain and Lithuania gave the U.S. a run for their money most times. As of right now, they're not able to beat us, but I think by 2016 either Spain or Russia (maybe Lith if Jonas Valanciunas gets good) may beat the U.S. in the gold medal game.

I'm rooting for Ricky Rubio and Alexey Shved if they play the U.S., I really don't like team U.S.A. (and Kobe will be retired by then).

Baseball rates amongst Black Americans has plummeted and baseball was classically more engrained in inner city America then Football ir Basketball was. In the 40s kids were boxing or playing Baseball so what has happened that these sports have fallen out of favor? This is why I don't buy that Basketball will forever stay popular because it is becoming stratified as hell simply because it's viewed as a means towards class mobility in America more so then a sport of fun.

I fucking hate that shit.

Those videos are so laughably ridiculous I can't help but laugh. The play acting is so extreme it's funny. But I agree that I fucking hate it from a sporting perspective.

btw I don't think that diving is the main reason Americans don't watch much soccer. It's just something to point out when people start getting ridiculous about linguistics (eg handegg) or relative worldwide popularity.
