Glad to see our elite betters grabbing their ankles and incrementally accepting sharia without putting up a fight.

First, Salat is not just on Friday afternoon when the students are going to the bars. It's every day, 6 times a day, starting before the dawn. For Duke the times appear to be:

6:07am
7:42am
12:18pm
2:52pm
5:12pm
6:30pm

Churchbells in most American cities aren't allowed to ring before 8am. But Salat is called twice before then.

Secondly, these people need to buy a plane ticket and go visit a Muslim country for a while. The Kingdom of Jordan is gorgeous, has the major tourist site Petra, and has state sponsored mosques, where the tower some dude would climb up and sing from has now been replaced with these monster PA systems that bristle out of the towers. Seriously, they've got more speakers than a Death Metal band.
39323106.cms

Every city in Jordan is full of dueling mosques trying to see who can have the loudest PA system screaming out their particular CD of songs. You know when they test all the civil defense sirens in town on a certain day at noon? It's like that every day, six times a day, starting at 6am.

It's not like anyone sings this shit live anymore, either. All the mosques just play different CDs over their lo-fi but insanely loud PA systems. There is no acknowledgement of progressive hearing loss from long term exposure to loud noise in arab countries.

Here's some kid trying to sell it hard to English speakers, but giving an idea of how fucking oppressively loud it is.

Then it becomes largely a mishmash once you get multiple mosques in the same area all going off at the same time trying to overplay each other, like in Amman, Jerash, or even Jerusalem.

There's a reason why western countries have repeatedly fought against mosques having outside speakers, which is the first step in creating muslim ghettos by driving away all non-muslims. And violating OSHA noise standards. And pretty much every community noise control law there is.

Actually it's 5 times a day. There is no adhan at dawn. Dawn marks the time when you actually can NOT pray. But, it doesn't matter. It's still loud and aggressive. And if you are not used to it, it will wake you up around 5 am every morning. Thanks god I live 20 minutes away from the closest mosque.

When I was a kid, I thought adhan was supposed to sound beautiful to Muslim ears just like church bells sounded nice to Christian ears. I thought there was something wrong with me for finding adhan repulsive and scarry, and then liking those church bells that I hear in the Hollywood movies. The truth is, it sounds exactly like what it's meant to sound like: oppressively loud and long. 3 minutes every time, 5 times a day makes 15 minutes a day. If you had an all-time favorite song and you listened to it once a day, you would be sick of it by the end of the 2nd week. Muslims listen to this for 15 minutes a day, every day for their entire lives, and they weirdly find it pleasing and spiritual. Talk about self deception.

Not sure why...doesn't say... probably pressure from those who don't want to be lynched
http://www.cnn.com/2015/01/15/us/duke-call-to-prayer/

The Univ rep said "It didn't have the desired unifying effect."

All 100% bullshit.

My bet: Big shots from the Alumni association got in touch with their pals in the upper echelons of the University and said "Do this shit and you'll never see another dime donated by me, or any child of mine attend there."

Debate over. Money makes the world go round.

Thanks for vote of confidence. Of course, an elite Duke alumni would phrase it better than me, that's why he's in the elite lozllzlz:

" Hi Jim, This is Congressman Peters , Duke 1957--about the Muslim prayer thing, You must be getting all sorts of heat on this right? I know what it's like! I think this is a admirable gesture towards openness, but I can't help thinking it might come back to bite you when some wack-job blows up something in our state. You'll have to face the no-win scenario of revoking the Muslim call-to-prayers there and looking cowardly, OR continue doing it in the face of a shitstorm.

I wouldn't want to be in that situation! "

Notice use of "wack-job" to establish folksiness and lack of snobbery.

Actually I made up IKE handle to be sarcastic, mimicking those over-enthusiastic conversationalists who exclaim "I know EXACTLY what you mean!" and almost bowl you over with their eagerness....

Durham, NC has pretty strong noise control laws. Noise is limited to 60db during the day and 50db at night. The local residents have been enforcing noise limits (there's plenty of noise meter apps for phones) to shut down off-campus college parties since 2013."Within Durham, citizens can report neighbors creating a disturbance at any time."

If you look at Durham City Ordinances, under Sec. 26-23 there's laws against:
b (2) The playing of any radio, phonograph or any musical instrument in such a manner or with such volume, particularly during the hours between 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., as to annoy or disturb the quiet, comfort or repose of persons in any dwelling, hotel or other type of residence.
b (13) The use of any drum, loudspeaker or other instrument or device for the purpose of attracting attention by creation of noise to any performance, show, sale, display or advertisement of merchandise.

There are exceptions to the law, including
Sec. 26-23 (6) Musical chimes emanating from a public or religious institution or facility, provided that the sound is less than 15 minutes in duration and occurs not more than three times per day.

So they can use church bells to call people to their service. Just not a PA system. Likewise Roosh couldn't use a PA system to broadcast a recording of church bells to interrupt them. But he could use real church bells to drown them out, up to 15 minutes, not more than three times a day.

Translation of the call to prayer:

Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest.
I bear witness that there is no God but Allah.
I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.
Hasten to worship (salat).
Hasten to success.
Prayer is better than sleep.
Allah is greatest.
There is no God but Allah.

There is no comparison of church bells and these chants about Muhammad and Allah.

I find the call soothing.

Do I want to hear it on my campus? No. But in Toronto you already do.. sorta. On my campus at least there is a Mosque at the end of the block off-campus and it blasts the chant on Fridays which gets mixed in with the noise of traffic and the Drake Playlist the hip-hop store plays all day long.

But I find any ancient chant soothing as its been tuned and tailored to draw a specific emotion out of people. Some old Semitic hymns/chants can change the color of fire, while the vibration and frequencies for other hymms and chants can increase the intensity of light in a room which has been tailored with proper acoustics. Its cool shit. It isn't some random noise. I can at least respect it for what it is (Just don't force shit on me). I also like the sound of hand crafted bells from the church, all relax me when I hear them in their proper form the way it was intended.

For the flip.. what I don't like is when this chant is some shitty recording and blasted through a cone shaped loud speaker and sounds like shit, but its just as annoying as hearing shitty recordings of church bells which many churches do now to cut costs.

I was staying in Fort Cochin a while back. It's a small enclave within a larger city in the south of India which has a history of Portuguese influence dating back to the early 1500s. There is a Portuguese-built cathedral which once held the remains of Vasco de Gamba, as well as many churches. Most of the residents are Christians, and there is also a small population of Indian Jews. In the wider city across the waters, and also in the state (Kerala), although the majority are Hindus, 20% of the population are Christians.

So I was surprised on my first night staying there to be woken at 4:30am with the obnoxious wailing of the call to prayer. I've lived and traveled in several predominantly Muslim countries and could accept it during the time I stayed there. However, I couldn't understand why the local population would accept this ungodly disturbance of their sleep patterns.

About a minute after the call to prayer, the church bells started chiming and it was one of the sweetest things I have ever heard. Sure, it didn't help that I'd been woken up in accordance with the scribblings of a few ignorant 7th century desert dwellers. But it was reassuring to see that there were people who were blatantly opposing this bullshit.

This is the only time I've experienced church bells ringing at this time. I'd be surprised if it happens anywhere else. If Christians had the habit of ringing their bells before dawn to wake the entire population, I would be equally pissed off. It's incredible that the Muslim minority (less than 20% in the state I'm talking about, and only a tiny fraction in the area of Fort Cochin) are arrogant to the point that they think they have the right to wake up everyone within the reach of the loudspeakers from their minarets.

This is a first step. What's the percentage of Muslims in your community? Apparently in a place with under 20%, it's fine to wail loudly through megaphones before the sun is up. How long will it be before the secular residents of Birmingham, Bradford, Stockholm and Sydney awake from their drunken stupor at 4:30am to the announcement that allah is the greatest, allah is the only god, prayer is better than sleep, and once again that allah is great and all of that?

My sleep is precious. Any religion that fucks with my sleep is worthy of attack.

What will Duke do next ? Start playing Hitler's speeches from it's towers ?

I don't get the fear of Islam "spreading" in the US.

I'm the perfect example of a man that's come from muslim heritage who bleeds red and white and blue. Builds his own AR-15 that isn't serialized, fucks women, loves country music and punk rock.

Granted I can't stand religion (no offense to the gents who do). It just not me and I feel it's dividing the world more.

Also, absolutely money is the ultimate decision maker in any process. Guaranteed they got a shitload of blowback from powerful people.

I never said the Duke proposal to do this was a good idea, but I already knew all the hate that was going to come from it.

I had to leave a hotel in Phuket a couple of years back as I was being woken up in the middle of the night (or so it seemed) by that incessant wailing.

I'm pretty sick of the words Muslim, Islam and Allah right now; can't escape this medieval bollocks.

Kaotic, I understand where you are coming from but I am glad this was nipped in the bud. My concern was that if this started happening at Duke I bet you within the next few years the tiny vocal minority within the minority (meaning the tiny vocal Muslim minority that would want this or be happy with it) would have started asking for the same privilege on other campuses. We all know SJWs would happily embrace this idea and many more campuses would be broadcasting the call to weekly Muslim prayers.

I get it, a vocal minority putting their causes on the majority.

Religion should just be banned from school outright, "sorry we don't accommodate anyone, if you want that, go to a christian/judeo/muslim school"

This is insanity, a call to pray 324343 times a day ? I'm good thanks.

That is really slavish. How funny that so many are eager to say Christianity represents a tyranny, but not a word on that
