Evangelical pastor renounces Christianity and divorces his wife

Interesting story, but unfortunately there is not much explanation on why his views changed, just that they did.

Joshua Harris, the former evangelical pastor of a Maryland megachurch who wrote a best-selling book criticizing modern dating, has announced that he is no longer a Christian and is divorcing his wife.

Harris made both announcements via Instagram. He also used the announcement to apologize for views expressed in his 1997 book, “I Kissed Dating Goodbye.”

In the book, Harris had slammed dating as a “training ground for divorce,” urged Christians against engaging in premarital sex, and decried same-sex marriage.

Harris wrote on Instagram in apology, “Martin Luther said that the entire life of believers should be repentance. There’s beauty in that sentiment regardless of your view of God. I have lived in repentance for the past several years—repenting of my self-righteousness, my fear-based approach to life, the teaching of my books, my views of women in the church, and my approach to parenting to name a few. But I specifically want to add to this list now: to the LGBTQ+ community, I want to say that I am sorry for the views that I taught in my books and as a pastor regarding sexuality. I regret standing against marriage equality, for not affirming you and your place in the church, and for any ways that my writing and speaking contributed to a culture of exclusion and bigotry. I hope you can forgive me.⁣⁣”

On His Christian faith, Harris explained, “I have undergone a massive shift in regard to my faith in Jesus. The popular phrase for this is ‘deconstruction,’ the biblical phrase is ‘falling away.’ By all the measurements that I have for defining a Christian, I am not a Christian. Many people tell me that there is a different way to practice faith and I want to remain open to this, but I’m not there now.⁣⁣”

The Ohio native, who has wrote homosexuality was “wrong” and “filthy,” now regrets opposing marriage equality and asks forgiveness for “contributed to a culture of exclusion and bigotry.”

At least he's not trying to corrupt the church with his SJW views like many "Christians" in the USA do.

At least he's not trying to corrupt the church with his SJW views like many "Christians" in the USA do.

I went to one church in which the pastor dragged some LGBQ couple up on stage and asked the congregation to welcome them into the community and help change people's minds about how couples like this are viewed.

At that point, some 20-something year old guy in the crowd willingly stood up and asked him how we could help change the minds of others in the church.

I nearly lost it. I wanted to declare the pastor a false prophet right there on the spot but instead left the church for good, never to return.

Western Protestantism as been facing dangerous upheaval over the last two decades. I still believe Evangelicals are still fighting against the tide of secularism, but the waves strong and there are many.

However, I can also think of few who are more blue-pilled than the naive, devout Evangelical man. The pedestalizing of women I saw in my Baptist church growing up was overwhelming. The only thing expected from a wife was cooking. They were not to be exposed to anything difficult or strenuous.

These were men who professed to be the heads of their household, while their bathrooms were decorated in lavender and flowers, their bed frames white with lace skirts, they drive a minivan or feminine SUV with a stick family decal, their wives buy their clothes and select what they wear in public, determine his style of hair.

You might say this is nitpicking on frivolity and attribute it to the man's apathy concerning domestic affairs. Not true. A man's home is his castle isn't an axiom for nothing. We care and take pride in our surroundings. No single man's house could be mistaken for a woman's, yet married men allow their homes to be overrun with decorations they'd never choose. Same for clothing and hairstyle. A lot of these guys will say the don't care about their appearance, but they do. Their behavior is just indicative of their neutered life and their wive's disregard for her husband's preferences. I find it very telling.

Show me a man with a lavender bathroom and I'll show you a man who does not have the respect of his wife.

Whew, at first glance my brain processed that he became Christian and divorced his wife, because that would have made much more sense than this.

By quick googling it becomes apparent that he's being promoted by Jezebel, New York Times, CNN, all the usual suspects.
Very suspicious indeed.

The banner in front of a Presbyterian church in my town reads: "A friendly reminder: Jesus was neither, Christian, white, or American." There is also a gay pride flag draped over it. The pastor lists social justice as one of his causes on the website.

Lavender might be worse than soy for men. It could be like your wife putting a sea pod under your bed to make you the shadow of the man you were.

This perverse born again experience seems suspicious.

I distrust "megachurches" and the people who lead them. I think they're more about spectacle than saving souls.

The men and women who lead megachurches have mega-expenses, so their main responsibility is to keep big revenue streams flowing...which means keeping the customer (i.e. the parishioner) satisfied. The messages they put out are more like commercial slogans than scripture.

This is how misguided concepts like "the prosperity gospel" came about. Preachers had to appease Yuppies who felt guilty about their energy-wasting SUVs and McMansions, so they perverted biblical passages for their benefit.

In my town, we have a church like this. They broadcast their masses online. It's ridiculous. The messages from the preachers are little different than what you'd get from Marianne Williamson or Oprah.

Josh Harris, in my opinion, was the modern-day version of the old carnival barkers. "Bring 'em into the tent, and it doesn't matter what you say to get butts in the seats."

If you're looking for a real religious community, find a small chapel in your area and go to that. The church I attended as a kid was a like a shoebox. I've never been religious per se, but I still keep in touch with a lot of the old church crowd from my youth. And you can bet the old priest we had was NOT telling that tiny crowd things he thought they wanted to hear.

Harris was always a complete lightweight who got famous at a young age for dumb, gimmicky book. This reminds me a lot of (former) Christian musician Derek Webb, who had a similar trajectory and left the faith for what appear to be very similar reasons: blue-pill bleeding heart whining about Muh Homosexuals, Muh Trump, and every other Evangelical position to the right of MSNBC. In Webb's case, cheating on his wife was a contributing factor. Wouldn't be surprised if that happened here, too (though maybe she just didn't want to follow him in apostasizing.)

A friendly reminder: Jesus was neither socialist, homosexuality-affirming, a minority, nor a globalist. And his teachings toward the "oppressed" of forgiveness, reconciliation, and letting go of socio-political grudges are the total antithesis of SJW neo-Bolshevism.

It's horrific to see how completely the fags have infiltrated the Catholic church. I follow several sites that document how bad things are progressing...can hardly read the reports some days. Sad.

It doesn't surprise me. The SJW movement is primarily a left-wing Christian movement.

As stated in Pete Buttigieg's Webpage:

"Butigieg is a Christian and has said his faith has had a strong influence in his life."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_Buttigieg

Sinclair Lewis won a nobel prize writing about the pecular American religion, whose practices and behaviors have remained virtually unchanged since he described them in the 1920s.

I read his book in the late 90's and kind of followed that idea. It failed for me a long time before it failed for him.

Honestly if you look at his wife Shannon... she dresses like a granny and has Bill Gates' haircut. She should write a book called "Why I Kissed My Femininity Goodbye"

Just because Harris now can't tell the difference between his wife and another man, doesn't necessarily mean his book was completely wrong. We all know that modern dating is fucked up. It's immensely worse today than it was in 1998. His solutions were not perfect, they are too blue pill... however we should see it as a step in the right direction.

There's really nothing to explain here. You had an empty suit who tried to reconcile the Sexual Revolution with Christianity, couldn't do it and so chose the Sexual Revolution.

That's all there is to it. I give him full credit for being honest and just leaving the faith, rather than turning into a Rachel Held Evans-type progressive Christian and pretending there is some way to use the Bible and Christian tradition to justify feminism, gay sex, easy divorce, etc.

A typically great comment from you DOBA. Your point about the "prosperity gospel" is dead-on.

"Sexual freedom" is to progressive Christians what the "prosperity gospel" was for bourgeoisie, striver Christians.
