Martin Short's documentary and book "Inside the Brotherhood" was current at the time of publishing 1989.
Since then, the world (and British Freemasonry) have changed.
I believe Freemasons are nowhere near as influential as they were in 1989.
As some other commenters pointed out: membership of the Lodges have been declining with younger people increasingly disinterested in joining.
The bottom line is: if you are a true follower of Christ and value your salvation, you should not be a Freemason.

I have a friend who joined them a few years ago, and he said they now have a big recruiting campaign aimed at young men, and that up to a point it is actually working. The Masons are seen now as being "retro hip." He said what he mainly enjoys about them are the weekly dinner gatherings, and the friendships that develop out of such associations.

Yes, I have heard that too. Freemasonry (particularly the British Lodges) seem really desperate to attract new members.
Not sure how long these new, young(er) members would last.

Exactly. The letter is so obviously fake, with the inclusion of a word that wouldn’t exist for another half century, that it’s incredible anyone believes it’s real. People put out ludicrous stuff to try and discredit any refutation of groups like Masonry, by making bizarre and easily debunkable claims, so that people will take less seriously the actual, meaningful criticism such groups deserve. It’s pretty clever, but easy to see through if you get what they’re doing.
JLP had a caller that did this once, he claimed that you have to kill a family member to join the Masons. The only reason to say stuff like that is so next time someone hears criticism of Masonry, they’ll dismiss it for being as stupid as the last absurd claim they heard.

No one has the original letter by Pike, just as no one has the original document the Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion is based upon. In both cases words and phrases may have been changed as they have been circulated. I first came upon that quote by Pike in a book called Decent Into Slavery by Des Griffin, which was published in 1980. It was known amongst conspiracy theorists well before that.

I know nothing about freemasonry, what makes it expensive?
The costs add up at the end: registration fee (upon joining) monthly membership fees, cost of formal attire (suits and tie that you wear during masonic gatherings) cost of the regalia (that you wear during the rituals and some lodges expect you to buy your own) , the cost of dining (after the meetings) plus the donations that are expected from Freemasons towards the end of every official masonic meeting.
