Getting into photography - how to start, what to get?

That's a great idea, I usually only take pics when doing sight seeing traveling but if you are taking pics indoors you can see your pictures immediately for great feedback and learn quicker. When you take pics and see it on a tiny screen you think they turned out great but once on a computer screen you see where you screwed up and it's already too late.

I find that shooting tethered is great when taking self-portraits for practice or experimentation. Not sure I would want to bother setting it up and then worrying about one more item to carry, and a cable to watch out for, for a normal shoot

What do you guys think of canon’s editing software? I downloaded their digital photography software which is free and it seems to have a lot of the same stuff that I saw in Lightroom tutorials (have never used it so I have no idea)

I employ a content manager based out of Ukraine, and then I post the photos they took (I bought the rights) on my instagram to great success. I haven't even bothered with a camera yet.

If it hasn’t been said already, I think the best thing is to get a film camera to start off with. This way, you’ll focus on making every shot count and stay in the moment instead of chimping. It doesn’t have to be an old school manual either.

You can got a canon 650 film camera and a 50mm 1.8 for 100 bucks. And if you want to go digital, you won’t have to buy a new set of lenses either.

... And yes, that fro guy is annoying as shit.

A vast majority of photographers are pretty nerdy and annoying. So when some guys with good swagger and a cool vibe show up, its game over.

I just bought my first good quality full frame camera a couple months ago. I have mostly been using it to shoot product photos, but also street style mostly of my family.

I have a studio I built at work to do product photography but I also have also used it to do some headshots and low-key female nudes.

Tomorrow is my first athletic photo shoot. A guy is coming in to get some fitness photos done. He is shredded and I will set the lighting to low-key and get some high contrast off his muscle tone. I think I might enjoy this type of photography more - and I feel I can probably make a decent bit of cash on the side by shooting fitness models in this type of environment.

Its great to be back into photography again!

How did the shoot go?

Better than I expected for sure. I learned a lot about lighting, and from a 2 hour shoot I managed to get 12 really strong images.

He also learned a lot about posing. The one thing that we both agreed on is that low key photos take a lot of the ego out, as the face and eyes are not necessarily the focus. Instead, things like symmetry become the focus.

Overall I am pretty excited. The next step is going to be on how to start getting some paying clients into the studio.

I'm getting my first proper camera this week (at least it is to me).

Entry level DSLR, the Canon EOS 4000d.

Seems pretty basic & stripped down, & for this reason should be a good starting point. Just looking for a new hobby really, want to take mostly nature shots, thinking it will get me out and visiting places that ordinarily i struggle with motivation to travel to.

This is a great thread, thanks for starting it.

My goal is to have a side-business doing Tinder/online dating photos that actually get guys laid. There's gotta be a huge demand.

Also, I don't want to hire a photographer for my own photos, something in me wants to nail this down myself.

It seems to me in today's world competence over one's media image/brand is as necessary to men as dress, diet, fitness, self-defense, game, income or career, etc.

How have you found this to be? I have the same idea for when i've got to grips with the basics.

Way i see it as a guy who is Game-aware can cut through the bullshit with other guys, and give them far better shots than your standard professional photographer, or just non-game aware hobbyist, even if the technical aspect may be lacking.

I've always felt that Studio pics look lame & thirsty tbh.

How much do you charge? Did you get much response?
